Da Jetro, presten i Midian og Moses' svigerfar, hørte om alt det Gud hadde gjort for Moses og for Israels folk, og at Herren hadde ført Israel ut av Egypt,

When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;

tok Jetro, Moses' svigerfar, med seg Sippora, Moses' kone, etter at han hadde sendt henne tilbake,

Then Jethro, Moses' father in law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,

og hennes to sønner. Den enes navn var Gersom, for han sa: 'Jeg har vært en fremmed i et merkelig land.'

And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:

Og den andres navn var Elieser, for han sa: 'Min fars Gud var min hjelp og reddet meg fra faraos sverd.'

And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:

Jetro, Moses' svigerfar, kom da til Moses i ørkenen med hans sønner og kone, der han hadde slått leir ved Guds berg.

And Jethro, Moses' father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:

Og han sa til Moses: 'Jeg, din svigerfar Jetro, er kommet til deg, og din kone og hennes to sønner er med henne.'

And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

Moses gikk ut for å møte sin svigerfar, bøyde seg for ham og kysset ham; de hilste på hverandre og gikk inn i teltet.

And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.

Moses fortalte sin svigerfar om alt det Herren hadde gjort mot farao og egypterne for Israels skyld, om all motgangen de hadde møtt på veien, og hvordan Herren hadde reddet dem.

And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.

Jetro gledet seg over all den godheten som Herren hadde vist mot Israel, ved å redde dem fra egypternes hånd.

And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

Og Jetro sa: 'Velsignet være Herren, som har reddet dere fra egypternes hånd og fra faraos hånd, og som har utfri folk fra egypternes undertrykkelse.

And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

Nå vet jeg at Herren er større enn alle guder, for det beviste han da de opptrådte hovmodig.'

Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.

Jetro, Moses' svigerfar, tok da et brennoffer og ofre til Gud, og Aron kom med alle Israels eldste for å spise brød med Moses' svigerfar foran Gud.

And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father in law before God.

Dagen etter satte Moses seg for å dømme folket, og folket sto ved Moses fra morgen til kveld.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

Da Moses' svigerfar så alt han gjorde for folket, sa han: 'Hva er dette du gjør for folket? Hvorfor sitter du alene, mens hele folket står omkring deg fra morgen til kveld?'

And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

Moses sa til sin svigerfar: 'Fordi folket kommer til meg for å spørre Gud til råds.

And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to inquire of God:

Når de har en sak, kommer de til meg, og jeg dømmer mellom den ene og den andre. Jeg gjør dem kjent med Guds forskrifter og lover.'

When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

Moses' svigerfar sa da til ham: 'Det er ikke bra, det du gjør.

And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

Du vil utholde deg selv og også dette folket som er med deg. For dette er for tungt for deg; du kan ikke gjøre det alene.

Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

Lytt nå til meg! Jeg vil gi deg råd, og Gud skal være med deg. Vær den som taler på vegne av folket til Gud, og legg fram sakene for Gud.

Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

Du skal lære dem forskrifter og lover og vise dem den veien de skal gå og det arbeidet de skal gjøre.

And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

Fra folket skal du velge ut dyktige menn som har gudsfrykt, menn av sannhet som hater urettferdig vinning. Sett dem til å lede folket som høvdinger for tusener, hundre, femti og ti.

Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

La dem dømme folket til enhver tid. Men de store sakene skal de bringe til deg, mens de mindre sakene skal de selv dømme. Slik vil det være lettere for deg, for de vil bære byrden sammen med deg.

And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

Dersom du gjør dette, og Gud befaler deg slik, da vil du kunne holde ut, og også hele dette folket vil kunne dra tilbake til sitt sted i fred.

If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

Så hørte Moses på sin svigerfar og gjorde alt det han hadde sagt.

So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

Moses valgte ut dyktige menn fra hele Israel og satte dem til å lede folket som høvdinger for tusener, hundre, femti og ti.

And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

De dømte folket til enhver tid. De vanskelige sakene brakte de til Moses, men de mindre sakene dømte de selv.

And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

Så lot Moses sin svigerfar dra, og han vendte tilbake til sitt eget land.

And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
