I den tredje måneden, da Israels barn hadde dratt ut av Egyptens land, kom de til Sinai-ørkenen den samme dagen.

In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.

For de hadde reist fra Rephidim, og var kommet til Sinai-ørkenen, og der slo de leir i ørkenen; og der slo Israel leir foran fjellet.

For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.

Og Moses gikk opp til Gud, og Herren kalte på ham fra fjellet og sa: Slik skal du si til Jakobs hus, og fortelle Israels barn:

And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;

Dere har sett hva jeg gjorde med egypterne, og hvordan jeg bar dere på ørnevinger og førte dere til meg selv.

Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.

Så nå, hvis dere virkelig hører på min røst og holder min pakt, skal dere være min spesielle eiendom fremfor alle andre folk: for hele jorden er min.

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

Og dere skal være et kongerike av prester for meg, og et hellig folk. Dette er ordene du skal tale til Israels barn.

And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

Og Moses kom og kalte til seg folkets eldste, og la fram for dem alle disse ordene som Herren hadde befalt ham.

And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him.

Og hele folket svarte sammen og sa: Alt hva Herren har sagt, vil vi gjøre. Og Moses brakte folkets ord tilbake til Herren.

And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.

Og Herren sa til Moses: Se, jeg kommer til deg i en tykk sky, slik at folket kan høre når jeg snakker med deg, og tro deg for alltid. Og Moses fortalte ordene fra folket til Herren.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.

Og Herren sa til Moses: Gå til folket, og hellig dem i dag og i morgen, og la dem vaske klærne sine.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,

Og vær klar til den tredje dagen, for på den tredje dagen vil Herren stige ned for alles øyne på Sinai-fjellet.

And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.

Og du skal sette grenser for folket rundt omkring, og si: Pass dere, så dere ikke går opp på fjellet, eller rører ved kanten av det: den som rører ved fjellet, skal visselig dø.

And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:

Ingen hånd skal røre det, men han skal visselig steines eller skytast, enten det er dyr eller menneske, det skal ikke leve: når larmet fra trompeten lyder lenge, skal de komme opp til fjellet.

There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.

Og Moses gikk ned fra fjellet til folket, og helliget folket, og de vasket klærne sine.

And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.

Og han sa til folket: Vær klare til den tredje dagen, kom ikke nær til deres hustruer.

And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not at your wives.

Og det skjedde på den tredje dagen om morgenen at det var torden og lyn, og en tykk sky over fjellet, og lyden av trompeten var meget høy; så alt folket i leiren skalv.

And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet ceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

Og Moses førte folket ut av leiren for å møte Gud; og de sto ved foten av fjellet.

And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

Og Sinai-fjellet stod i røk, for Herren steg ned på det i ild: og røyken opp steg som røyken fra en ovn, og hele fjellet skalv kraftig.

And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

Og da lyden av trompeten hørtes lenge, og ble sterkere og sterkere, talte Moses, og Gud svarte ham med en røst.

And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.

Og Herren steg ned på Sinai-fjellet, på toppen av fjellet: og Herren kalte Moses opp til toppen av fjellet, og Moses gikk opp.

And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

Og Herren sa til Moses: Gå ned, advar folket, så de ikke trenger seg frem for å se Herren, og mange av dem omkommer.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish.

Og la prestene også, som nærmer seg Herren, hellige seg, så Herren ikke kommer over dem.

And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.

Og Moses sa til Herren: Folket kan ikke gå opp på Sinai-fjellet, for du har gitt oss befaling og sagt: Sett grenser rundt fjellet, og hellig det.

And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.

Og Herren sa til ham: Gå ned, og kom opp igjen, du og Aron med deg; men prestene og folket skal ikke bryte gjennom for å komme opp til Herren, så han kommer over dem.

And the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them.

Så Moses gikk ned til folket og talte til dem.

So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them.
