Og Herren sa til Moses: Dra opp herfra, du og folket som du førte ut av Egypt, til det landet som jeg sverget å gi til Abraham, Isak og Jakob, og sa: Til din ætt vil jeg gi det.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:

Og jeg vil sende en engel foran deg, og jeg vil drive ut kanaaneerne, amorittene, hetittene, perisittene, hevittene og jebusittene.

And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:

Til et land som flyter med melk og honning. Men jeg vil ikke gå opp med dere, for dere er et stivnakket folk, for at jeg ikke skal ødelegge dere på veien.

Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.

Og da folket hørte disse onde nyhetene, sørget de, og ingen bar sine smykker.

And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.

For Herren hadde sagt til Moses: Si til Israels barn: Dere er et stivnakket folk. Om et øyeblikk vil jeg komme opp blant dere og tilintetgjøre dere. Så ta av dere smykkene, så jeg kan vite hva jeg skal gjøre med dere.

For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.

Og Israels barn tok av seg sine smykker ved fjellet Horeb.

And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.

Og Moses tok teltet og slo det opp utenfor leiren, langt borte fra leiren, og kalte det møteteltet. Og det skjedde at hver den som søkte Herren, gikk ut til møteteltet, som var utenfor leiren.

And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.

Og det skjedde, når Moses gikk ut til teltet, at hele folket reiste seg opp og sto ved døren til sitt telt, og så etter Moses til han hadde gått inn i teltet.

And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.

Og det skjedde, da Moses gikk inn i teltet, at skysøylen kom ned og sto ved døren til teltet, og Herren talte med Moses.

And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the LORD talked with Moses.

Og hele folket så skysøylen stå ved døren til teltet, og hele folket reiste seg og tilba, hver ved døren til sitt telt.

And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.

Og Herren talte med Moses ansikt til ansikt, som en mann snakker med sin venn. Deretter vendte han tilbake til leiren, men hans tjener Josva, Nuns sønn, en ung mann, forlot ikke teltet.

And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

Og Moses sa til Herren: Se, du sier til meg: Før dette folket opp. Men du har ikke latt meg få vite hvem du vil sende med meg. Likevel har du sagt: Jeg kjenner deg ved navn, og du har funnet nåde for mine øyne.

And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.

Så ber jeg deg, hvis jeg har funnet nåde for dine øyne, vis meg din vei, så jeg kan kjenne deg og finne nåde for dine øyne. Tenk på at dette folket er ditt folk.

Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

Og han sa: Mitt nærvær skal gå med deg, og jeg vil gi deg hvile.

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

Da sa Moses til ham: Hvis ditt nærvær ikke går med oss, så la oss ikke dra herfra.

And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.

For hvordan skal det være kjent at jeg og ditt folk har funnet nåde for dine øyne, hvis ikke du går med oss? Da vil vi være skilt ut, jeg og ditt folk, fra alle folkene som er på jordens overflate.

For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

Og Herren sa til Moses: Jeg vil også gjøre dette som du har bedt om, for du har funnet nåde for mine øyne, og jeg kjenner deg ved navn.

And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

Og han sa: Jeg ber deg, vis meg din herlighet.

And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

Og han sa: Jeg vil la all min godhet gå foran deg, og jeg vil forkynne Herrens navn for deg, og være nådig mot den jeg vil være nådig, og vise barmhjertighet mot den jeg vil vise barmhjertighet.

And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

Og han sa: Du kan ikke se mitt ansikt, for intet menneske kan se meg og leve.

And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

Og Herren sa: Se, det er et sted ved meg, og du skal stå på en klippe.

And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:

Og det skal skje, mens min herlighet går forbi, at jeg vil sette deg i en fjellkløft og dekke deg med min hånd mens jeg går forbi.

And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

Og jeg vil ta bort hånden min, og du skal se min rygg, men mitt ansikt skal ikke ses.

And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
