Herren hadde sagt til Abram: Dra bort fra landet ditt, fra slekten din og fra din fars hus, til det landet som jeg vil vise deg.

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, t thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

Jeg vil gjøre deg til et stort folk; jeg vil velsigne deg og gjøre navnet ditt stort, og du skal bli til velsignelse.

And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

Jeg vil velsigne dem som velsigner deg, og den som forbanner deg, skal jeg forbanne. I deg skal alle slekter på jorden bli velsignet.

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Da dro Abram av sted, slik som Herren hadde sagt til ham, og Lot dro med ham. Abram var syttifem år gammel da han dro fra Haran.

So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

Og Abram tok med seg Sarai, sin kone, og Lot, sin brorsønn, og alle eiendelene de hadde samlet, og folkene de hadde fått i Haran. De dro av sted til Kanaan, og de kom til Kanaans land.

And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

Abram dro gjennom landet til stedet Sikem, til Moreh-sletten. På den tiden bodde kanaanittene i landet.

And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.

Herren viste seg for Abram og sa: "Til din ætt vil jeg gi dette landet." Der bygde Abram et alter for Herren, som hadde vist seg for ham.

And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.

Derfra flyttet han til fjellene øst for Betel. Han slo opp teltet sitt med Betel i vest og Ai i øst. Der bygde han et alter for Herren og påkalte Herrens navn.

And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Beth-el, and pitched his tent, having Beth-el on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.

Deretter brøt Abram opp og dro videre mot sør.

And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.

Det ble hungersnød i landet, og Abram dro ned til Egypt for å bo der en tid, for hungersnøden var stor i landet.

And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.

Like før han skulle til å gå inn i Egypt, sa han til Sarai, sin kone: "Nå vet jeg at du er en vakker kvinne.

And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:

Når egypterne ser deg, vil de si: Dette er hans kone. Da kommer de til å drepe meg, men la deg leve.

Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.

Si derfor at du er min søster, så det går meg vel for din skyld, og så jeg får leve på grunn av deg."

Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.

Da Abram kom til Egypt, så egypterne at hun var en svært vakker kvinne.

And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.

Også faraos stormenn fikk se henne og roste henne for farao. Kvinnen ble tatt inn i faraos hus.

The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.

Han behandlet Abram godt for hennes skyld, og Abram fikk småfe, storfe, esler, slaver, slavekvinner, eselhunner og kameler.

And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.

Men Herren lot store plager ramme farao og hans hus på grunn av Sarai, Abrams kone.

And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife.

Da kalte farao Abram til seg og sa: "Hva er det du har gjort mot meg? Hvorfor fortalte du meg ikke at hun var din kone?

And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?

Hvorfor sa du: 'Hun er min søster,' slik at jeg kunne ta henne til kone? Nå, her er din kone, ta henne og gå!"

Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.

Og farao befalte sine menn om å sende ham av sted med hans kone og alt han eide.

And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.
