Og Abram dro opp fra Egypt, han og hans kone, og alt han eide, og Lot var med ham, til sørlandet.

And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.

Og Abram var svært rik på fe, sølv og gull.

And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

Og han dro videre på sine reiser fra sørlandet og helt til Betel, til det stedet hvor hans telt hadde vært i begynnelsen, mellom Betel og Ai.

And he went on his journeys from the south even to Beth-el, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Beth-el and Hai;

Til det stedet hvor alteret var, som han hadde laget der først: og der påkalte Abram Herrens navn.

Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

Og også Lot, som dro med Abram, hadde flokker, buskap og telt.

And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

Og landet kunne ikke bære dem begge, så de kunne bo sammen; for deres eiendeler var så store at de ikke kunne bo sammen.

And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell tother: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell tother.

Og det oppstod strid mellom Abrams gjetere og Lots gjetere, mens kanaaneerne og perisittene bodde i landet.

And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

Da sa Abram til Lot: «La det ikke være strid mellom meg og deg, mellom mine gjetere og dine, for vi er jo brødre.»

And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

«Er ikke hele landet foran deg? Skil deg fra meg, jeg ber deg; hvis du drar til venstre, skal jeg ta til høyre, eller hvis du drar til høyre, skal jeg ta til venstre.»

Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

Lot løftet blikket og så hele Jordan-sletten, som var godt vannet overalt, før Herren ødela Sodoma og Gomorra, som Herrens hage, som landet Egypt når du kommer til Soar.

And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

Så valgte Lot seg hele Jordan-sletten, og Lot dro mot øst, og de skilte seg fra hverandre.

Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

Abram ble boende i Kanaans land, mens Lot bodde i slettens byer og slo sine telt mot Sodoma.

Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

Men mennene i Sodoma var onde og syndet storlig mot Herren.

But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

Og Herren sa til Abram etter at Lot hadde skilt seg fra ham: «Løft nå blikket og se fra der du er, mot nord, sør, øst og vest.

And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:

For hele landet du ser, vil jeg gi deg og din ætt for alltid.

For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

Og jeg vil gjøre din ætt som støvet på jorden, slik at hvis noen kunne telle jordens støv, da kunne også din ætt telles.

And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

Stå opp, vandre gjennom landet på langs og tvers, for jeg vil gi det til deg.»

Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.

Så flyttet Abram teltet sitt, og han kom og bodde ved eikelunden i Mamre, som er i Hebron, og der bygde han et alter for Herren.

Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.
