Nå hadde Sarai, Abrams kone, ikke fått noen barn. Hun hadde en tjenestekvinne, en egypter, som het Hagar.

Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

Sarai sa til Abram: "Se nå, Herren har hindret meg fra å få barn. Jeg ber deg, gå til min tjenestekvinne; kanskje jeg kan få barn gjennom henne." Og Abram lyttet til Sarais ord.

And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

Så tok Sarai, Abrams kone, sin tjenestekvinne Hagar den egyptiske, etter at Abram hadde bodd ti år i Kanaans land, og gav henne til sin mann Abram som hans kone.

And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

Han gikk inn til Hagar, og hun ble med barn. Da hun så at hun hadde blitt med barn, foraktet hun sin frue for sine øyne.

And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

Sarai sa da til Abram: "Den urett som er gjort mot meg, er din skyld. Jeg har gitt min tjenestekvinne i dine armer, og når hun så at hun hadde blitt med barn, foraktet hun meg. Må Herren dømme mellom meg og deg."

And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD jud between me and thee.

Men Abram sa til Sarai: "Se, din tjenestekvinne er i dine hender. Gjør med henne som du synes." Da behandlet Sarai henne hardt, og Hagar flyktet fra henne.

But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

Og Herrens engel fant henne ved en vannkilde i ørkenen, ved kilden på veien til Shur.

And the anl of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

Og han sa: "Hagar, Sarais tjenestekvinne, hvor kommer du fra, og hvor skal du hen?" Hun svarte: "Jeg flykter fra ansiktet til min frue Sarai."

And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

Og Herrens engel sa til henne: "Vend tilbake til din frue og underordne deg under hennes hånd."

And the anl of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

Og Herrens engel sa videre til henne: "Jeg vil gjøre din etterkommere meget tallrike, så mange at de ikke kan telles."

And the anl of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

Og Herrens engel sa til henne: "Se, du er med barn, og du skal føde en sønn. Du skal kalle ham Ismael, for Herren har hørt om din lidelse."

And the anl of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.

Og han skal bli som et vilt esel av et menneske. Hans hånd vil være mot alle, og alles hånd vil være mot ham, og han skal bo blant alle sine brødre."

And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

Da kalte hun Herrens navn som talte til henne: "Du er Gud som ser meg," for hun sa: "Har jeg virkelig sett Ham som ser meg?"

And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

Derfor kalte hun brønnen Beer-lahai-roi; se, den er mellom Kadesj og Bered.

Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

Hagar fødte Abram en sønn, og Abram kalte sin sønn som Hagar hadde født, Ismael.

And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

Og Abram var åttiseks år gammel da Hagar fødte Ismael til ham.

And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
