Abraham reiste derfra mot sør og slo seg ned mellom Kadesj og Sur. Han bodde som fremmed i Gerar.

And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in rar.

Abraham sa om Sara, kona si, «Hun er min søster.» Da sendte Abimelek, kongen av Gerar, bud og hentet Sara.

And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of rar sent, and took Sarah.

Men Gud kom til Abimelek i en drøm om natten og sa til ham: «Se, du skal dø på grunn av kvinnen du har tatt, for hun er en annen manns kone.»

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.

Men Abimelek hadde ikke kommet nær henne, så han sa: «Herre, vil du virkelig drepe et uskyldig folk?

But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?

Sa ikke han til meg: 'Hun er min søster'? Og hun selv sa også: 'Han er min bror.' Dette har jeg gjort i god tro og med reine hender.»

Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.

Gud sa til ham i drømmen: «Ja, jeg vet at du gjorde dette i god tro, derfor hindret jeg deg fra å synde mot meg. Jeg lot deg ikke røre henne.

And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.

Gi nå mannen tilbake kona hans, for han er en profet. Han vil be for deg, så du skal få leve. Men hvis du ikke gir henne tilbake, skal du vite at du skal dø, du og alle dine.»

Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.

Abimelek sto opp tidlig neste morgen, kalte sammen alle tjenerne sine og fortalte dem alt dette. Da ble mennene svært redde.

Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.

Så kalte Abimelek på Abraham og sa: «Hva har du gjort mot oss? Hva har jeg gjort deg siden du brakte over meg og mitt rike en så stor synd? Du har gjort mot meg det som ikke er rett.»

Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

Abimelek spurte Abraham: «Hva fikk deg til å gjøre dette?»

And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?

Abraham svarte: «Jeg tenkte at det sikkert ikke er gudsfrykt på dette stedet, og at de vil drepe meg for min kones skyld.

And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.

Og ja, hun er virkelig min søster. Hun er datteren til min far, men ikke til min mor, og hun ble min kone.

And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

Da Gud lot meg forlate min fars hus, ba jeg henne om denne hjelpen: På hvert sted vi kommer til, si at jeg er din bror.»

And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.

Abimelek tok også sauer, okser, slaver og slavekvinner og ga dem til Abraham, og han gav ham Sara, hans kone, tilbake.

And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

Abimelek sa: «Se, landet mitt ligger foran deg; bo hvor du synes det passer.»

And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.

Og til Sara sa han: «Se, jeg har gitt din bror tusen stykker sølv. Dette skal være som et slør for øynene dine foran alle som er med deg, og du blir rettferdiggjort for alle.»

And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.

Så ba Abraham til Gud, og Gud helbredet Abimelek, og hans kone, og hans tjenestekvinner, så de fikk barn igjen.

So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.

For Herren hadde stengt livmødrene i Abimeleks hus på grunn av Sara, Abrahams kone.

For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.
