Etter disse hendelsene satte Gud Abraham på prøve og sa til ham: Abraham! Abraham svarte: Se, her er jeg.

And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

Da sa Gud: Ta nå din sønn, din eneste sønn Isak, som du elsker, og dra til landet Moria og ofre ham der som et brennoffer på et av fjellene som jeg skal vise deg.

And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and t thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

Abraham sto tidlig opp neste morgen, salte eselet sitt og tok med seg to av sine unge tjenere og Isak, sin sønn. Han kløyvde ved til brennofferet, sto opp og dro til stedet Gud hadde nevnt.

And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

På den tredje dagen løftet Abraham blikket og så stedet langt borte.

Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

Abraham sa til sine tjenere: Bli her med eselet, mens jeg og gutten går videre for å tilbe; vi kommer tilbake til dere.

And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

Abraham tok veden til brennofferet og la den på Isak, sin sønn. Han tok selv i hånden ilden og kniven, og slik gikk de videre sammen.

And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them tother.

Isak sa til sin far Abraham: Far! Abraham svarte: Her er jeg, min sønn. Isak sa: Se, her er ilden og veden, men hvor er lammet til brennofferet?

And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

Abraham svarte: Gud vil selv sørge for lammet til brennofferet, min sønn. Og de gikk videre sammen.

And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them tother.

Da de kom til stedet Gud hadde nevnt, bygde Abraham et alter der, la veden i orden, bandt Isak, sin sønn, og la ham på alteret over veden.

And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

Abraham rakte ut hånden og tok kniven for å ofre sin sønn.

And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

Men Herrens engel ropte til ham fra himmelen og sa: Abraham, Abraham! Han svarte: Her er jeg.

And the anl of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.

Engelen sa: Legg ikke din hånd på gutten, og gjør ham ingenting. For nå vet jeg at du frykter Gud, da du ikke sparte din eneste sønn for meg.

And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

Abraham løftet blikket, og se, bak ham var en vær som hadde satt seg fast i et buskas ved hornene. Abraham gikk og tok væren og ofret den som brennoffer i stedet for sin sønn.

And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

Abraham kalte dette stedet for Jehova-jireh. Derfor sier man den dag i dag: På Herrens berg skal det bli sørget for.

And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Herrens engel ropte til Abraham fra himmelen for andre gang

And the anl of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,

og sa: Ved meg selv har jeg sverget, sier Herren, fordi du har gjort dette og ikke sparte din eneste sønn,

And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:

vil jeg i sannhet velsigne deg og gjøre din ætt meget tallrik som stjernene på himmelen og som sanden på havets bredd. Din ætt skal eie fiendenes porter.

That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

Ved din ætt skal alle jordens nasjoner velsignes, fordi du har lydt min røst.

And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Så vendte Abraham tilbake til sine unge menn, og de dro sammen til Beer-Seba. Abraham ble boende i Beer-Seba.

So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went tother to Beer-sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba.

Etter disse hendelsene ble det fortalt Abraham: Se, Milka har også født barn til din bror Nahor.

And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;

Det var Hus, hans førstefødte, og Buz, hans bror, og Kemuel, arameernes far,

Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,

og Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaf og Betuel.

And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.

Betuel ble far til Rebekka. Disse åtte fødte Milka til Nahor, Abrahams bror.

And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

Hans medhustru, som hette Reuma, fødte også barn: Teba, Gaham, Tahasj og Ma'aka.

And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.
