And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah.

Sarah døde i Kirjath-Arba, som også er kjent som Hebron i Kanaans land. Abraham kom for å sørge over henne og gråte over henne.

And Sarah died in Kirjath-arba; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.

Abraham reiste seg fra sin døde og talte til Hets barn, og sa:

And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying,

Jeg er en fremmed og en innflytter blant dere. Gi meg en eiendom til gravsted hos dere, slik at jeg kan begrave min døde ut av min syn.

I am a stranr and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.

Hets barn svarte Abraham og sa til ham:

And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him,

Hør oss, herre; du er en mektig fyrste blant oss. Begravel dine døde i våre utvalgte gravsteder; ingen av oss skal nekte deg sitt gravsted, slik at du kan begrave dine døde.

Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead.

Abraham reiste seg og bøyde seg for folket i landet, for Hets barn.

And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth.

Han fortsatte å tale til dem, og sa: Hvis det er deres ønske at jeg skal begrave min døde ut av min syn, så hør på meg og be for meg til Efron, Sojars sønn.

And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,

La ham gi meg Makpelas hule, som han eier, som er i enden av hans åker. For full betaling skal han gi meg den som eiendom til gravsted blant dere.

That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you.

Efron bodde blant Hets barn. Efron, hetitten, svarte Abraham i nærvær av Hets barn, i nærvær av alle som kom inn ved byporten, og sa:

And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying,

Nei, herre, hør meg. Åkeren gir jeg deg, og hulen som er der gir jeg deg også. I nærvær av mitt folk gir jeg deg den; begrav dine døde.

Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee: bury thy dead.

Abraham bøyde seg igjen foran folket i landet.

And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land.

Så talte han til Efron i nærvær av folket i landet, og sa: Men hvis du vil gi det, hør meg, jeg ber deg. Jeg vil betale penger for åkeren; ta imot det av meg, så vil jeg begrave min døde der.

And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me, and I will bury my dead there.

Efron svarte Abraham og sa til ham:

And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him,

Herre, hør på meg: landet er verdt fire hundre sekel sølv. Hva er det mellom meg og deg? Begravel derfor dine døde.

My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead.

Abraham lyttet til Efron, og Abraham veide opp for Efron sølvet han hadde nevnt i nærvær av Hets barn, fire hundre sekel sølv, etter vekten som er vanlig blant kjøpmenn.

And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.

Slik ble Efrons mark som var i Makpela, som lå foran Mamre, åkeren og hulen som var der, og alle trærne som stod på marken, innenfor alle dens grenser rundt omkring,

And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure

bekreftet som Abrahams eiendom i nærvær av Hets barn, foran alle som kom inn ved byporten.

Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.

Etter dette begravde Abraham Sarah, sin kone, i hulen på marken Makpela foran Mamre, også kjent som Hebron, i Kanaans land.

And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan.

Slik ble marken og hulen der opprettet som Abrahams eiendom til gravsted av Hets barn.

And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth.
