Det var hungersnød i landet, i tillegg til den første hungersnøden som var på Abrahams tid. Og Isak drog til Abimelek, filisternes konge, til Gerar.

And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto rar.

Og Herren viste seg for ham og sa: Dra ikke ned til Egypt; bli i landet som jeg skal si deg.

And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

Bo som fremmed i dette landet, så vil jeg være med deg og velsigne deg. For til deg og din ætt vil jeg gi alle disse landene, og jeg vil oppfylle eden jeg sverget til Abraham, din far.

Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

Og jeg vil gjøre din ætt så tallrik som stjernene på himmelen, og jeg vil gi din ætt alle disse landene. I din ætt skal alle jordens nasjoner bli velsignet.

And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

Fordi Abraham adlød min røst og holdt mitt påbud, mine bud, mine forskrifter og mine lover.

Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my char, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

Så bodde Isak i Gerar.

And Isaac dwelt in rar:

Mennene i stedet spurte ham om hans kone, og han sa: Hun er min søster. For han fryktet å si: Hun er min kone; han tenkte: Mennene her vil kanskje drepe meg på grunn av Rebekka, fordi hun var vakker å se på.

And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.

Da det var gått en tid, skjedde det at Abimelek, filisternes konge, kikket ut av vinduet og så at Isak lekeslåss med Rebekka, sin kone.

And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.

Da kalte Abimelek på Isak, og sa: Sannelig, hun er din kone. Hvorfor sa du 'Hun er min søster'? Isak svarte: Jeg tenkte at jeg kunne bli drept på grunn av henne.

And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.

Og Abimelek sa: Hva har du gjort mot oss? En av folket kunne lett ha ligget med din kone, og du ville ha brakt skyld over oss.

And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.

Så befalte Abimelek alt sitt folk og sa: Den som rører denne mannen eller hans kone, skal utvilsomt dø.

And Abimelech chard all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

Isak sådde i det landet og fikk hundrefold det året, for Herren velsignet ham.

Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.

Og mannen ble mektig, gikk framover og ble veldig rik.

And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:

For han hadde flokker av sauer og kyr, og mange tjenere, og filistrene misunte ham.

For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.

Alle brønnene som hans fars tjenere hadde gravd i Abrahams dager, hadde filistrene tettet igjen og fylt med jord.

For all the wells which his father's servants had digd in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.

Og Abimelek sa til Isak: Gå bort fra oss, for du har blitt langt mektigere enn oss.

And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.

Da dro Isak derfra og slo opp sitt telt i Gerar-dalen og slo seg ned der.

And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of rar, and dwelt there.

Og Isak gravde opp igjen brønnene som de hadde gravd i Abrahams dager, for filistrene hadde tettet dem igjen etter Abrahams død, og han kalte dem ved de samme navnene hans far hadde brukt.

And Isaac digd again the wells of water, which they had digd in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

Isaks tjenere gravde i dalen og fant der en kilde med rennende vann.

And Isaac's servants digd in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

Men hyrdene i Gerar kranglet med Isaks hyrder og sa: Vannet er vårt. Så kalte han brønnen Esek, fordi de hadde kranglet med ham.

And the herdmen of rar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.

De gravde en ny brønn, og de kranglet også om den. Han kalte den Sitnah.

And they digd another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.

Så dro han videre og gravde en ny brønn, og om den kranglet de ikke. Han kalte den Rehobot og sa: For nå har Herren gitt oss rom, og vi skal bli fruktbare i landet.

And he removed from thence, and digd another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

Derfra dro han opp til Beer-Sheba.

And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba.

Den natten viste Herren seg for ham og sa: Jeg er din far Abrahams Gud. Frykt ikke, for jeg er med deg. Jeg vil velsigne deg og gjøre din ætt tallrik for min tjener Abrahams skyld.

And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.

Så bygde han et alter der og påkalte Herrens navn. Der slo Isaks tjenere også opp teltet og gravde en brønn.

And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digd a well.

Da kom Abimelek til ham fra Gerar med en av sine venner, Ahussat, og hærføreren sin, Pikol.

Then Abimelech went to him from rar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.

Isak spurte dem: Hvorfor kommer dere til meg, når dere hater meg og sendte meg bort fra dere?

And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?

De svarte: Vi har klart sett at Herren er med deg. Derfor sa vi, la det nå bli en ed mellom oss, mellom deg og oss, og la oss inngå en pakt med deg.

And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;

Du skal ikke skade oss, akkurat som vi ikke har rørt deg, men har gjort godt mot deg og latt deg dra i fred. Nå er du Herrens velsignede.

That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.

Så laget han et festmåltid for dem, og de spiste og drakk.

And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.

Tidlig neste morgen sverget de en ed til hverandre, og Isak sendte dem bort, og de dro i fred.

And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

Samme dag kom Isaks tjenere og fortalte om brønnen de hadde gravd, og sa til ham: Vi har funnet vann.

And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digd, and said unto him, We have found water.

Han kalte den Sjeba. Derfor heter byen Beer-Sheba den dag i dag.

And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba unto this day.

Esau var førti år gammel da han tok Judith, datter av be'eritten Beeri, og Basemat, datter av hetitten Elon, til koner.

And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:

De var til stor sorg for Isak og Rebekka.

Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
