Isaak kalte på Jakob, velsignet ham og ga ham instrukser, og sa til ham: Du skal ikke ta en kone fra døtrene til Kanaans folk.

And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and chard him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.

Reis til Paddan-Aram, til din morfar Betuels hus, og ta deg en kone derfra blant døtrene til Laban, din mors bror.

Arise, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.

Og Gud Den Allmektige velsigne deg, gjør deg fruktbar og mangfoldig, så du blir til en stor folkemengde.

And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;

Måtte han gi deg Abrahams velsignelse, til deg og din ætt med deg, slik at du kan arve det landet hvor du nå er en fremmed, som Gud ga til Abraham.

And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranr, which God gave unto Abraham.

Så sendte Isaak Jakob avsted, og han dro til Paddan-Aram, til Laban, sønn av Betuel syreren, Rebekkas bror, Jakobs og Esaus mor.

And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padan-aram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.

Da Esau så at Isaak hadde velsignet Jakob og sendt ham til Paddan-Aram for å ta seg en kone derfra, og at han hadde gitt ham instrukser da han velsignet ham, og sagt: Du skal ikke ta en kone fra Kanaans døtre,

When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a char, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;

og at Jakob hadde fulgt sin far og mor og reist til Paddan-Aram,

And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padan-aram;

og Esau forsto at Kanaans døtre ikke behaget Isaak, hans far,

And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;

gikk Esau til Ismael og tok Mahalath til kone i tillegg til de konene han hadde fra før. Hun var datter av Ismael, Abrahams sønn, og søster til Nebajot.

Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

Jakob dro fra Beer-Sheba og reiste mot Haran.

And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.

Han kom til et bestemt sted og overnattet der ettersom solen hadde gått ned. Han tok en av steinene der og la den under hodet som pute, og la seg til å sove på det stedet.

And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.

Han drømte om en stige som var reist opp på jorden og nådde til himmelen, og Guds engler steg opp og ned på den.

And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the anls of God ascending and descending on it.

Herren stod øverst på den og sa: Jeg er Herren, Abrahams Gud og Isaks Gud. Jeg vil gi deg og din ætt det landet du ligger på.

And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

Din ætt skal bli like tallrik som jordens støv, og du skal bre deg mot vest, øst, nord og sør. Alle jordens slekter skal velsignes i deg og i din ætt.

And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

Og se, jeg er med deg og vil beskytte deg hvor du enn går, og jeg skal bringe deg tilbake til dette landet. Jeg vil ikke forlate deg før jeg har gjort det jeg har lovet deg.

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

Da våknet Jakob fra søvnen og sa: Sannelig, Herren er på dette stedet, og jeg visste det ikke.

And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.

Han ble fylt av ærefrykt og sa: Hvor fryktinngytende er ikke dette stedet! Dette er ingen annen enn Guds hus, og dette er himmelens port.

And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

Jakob sto opp tidlig neste morgen, tok steinen han hadde hatt under hodet, reiste den som en støtte og helte olje over toppen av den.

And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

Han kalte stedet Betel, men den byen het tidligere Luz.

And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.

Jakob avla et løfte og sa: Hvis Gud er med meg og beskytter meg på reisen jeg nå legger ut på, og gir meg brød å spise og klær å ha på meg,

And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

så jeg kan komme tilbake til min fars hus i fred, da skal Herren være min Gud.

So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:

Denne steinen som jeg har satt opp som en støtte, skal være Guds hus. Og av alt du gir meg, vil jeg gi deg tiende.

And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
