Jakob løftet blikket, og så at Esau kom, og med ham fire hundre menn. Han delte barna mellom Lea, Rakel og de to tjenestekvinnene.

And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.

Han satte tjenestekvinnene og deres barn fremst, Lea og hennes barn etter, og Rakel og Josef bakerst.

And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.

Og han gikk foran dem og bøyde seg til jorden syv ganger, frem til han kom nær sin bror.

And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

Esau sprang for å møte ham, omfavnet ham, kastet seg om halsen på ham og kysset ham. Og de gråt.

And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

Deretter løftet Esau blikket og så kvinnene og barna, og spurte: «Hvem er de som er med deg?» Han svarte: «Barna som Gud nådig har gitt din tjener.»

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.

Deretter kom tjenestekvinnene nær med sine barn, og de bøyde seg.

Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.

Lea kom også nær med sine barn, og bøyde seg. Til slutt kom Josef nær med Rakel, og de bøyde seg.

And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.

Esau sa: «Hva betyr all denne flokken jeg møtte?» Jakob svarte: «For å finne nåde i min herres øyne.»

And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.

Esau sa: «Jeg har nok, min bror; behold det du har for deg selv.»

And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.

Men Jakob sa: «Nei, jeg ber deg, hvis jeg nå har funnet nåde i dine øyne, så ta imot min gave fra min hånd, for jeg har sett ditt ansikt som om jeg hadde sett Guds ansikt, og du har vært vennlig mot meg.

And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.

Jeg ber deg, ta imot min velsignelse som er brakt til deg, fordi Gud har vært nådig mot meg, og fordi jeg har nok.» Og han overtalte ham, og Esau tok imot.

Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urd him, and he took it.

Da sa Esau: «La oss dra videre og gå, og jeg vil gå foran deg.»

And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.

Men Jakob sa til ham: «Min herre vet at barna er svake, og jeg har med meg flokker og buskap med unger. Hvis de drives hardt en dag, vil hele flokken dø.

And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.

La min herre, jeg ber deg, gå foran sin tjener, så skal jeg komme etter sakte, i den takt barna og buskapet foran meg tåler, til jeg kommer til min herre i Se'ir.»

Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.

Esau sa: «La meg da få la noen av folkene som er med meg bli hos deg.» Men Jakob svarte: «Hva er vitsen? Hvis jeg bare får finne nåde i min herres øyne.»

And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.

Så vendte Esau den dagen tilbake til Se'ir på sin vei.

So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.

Men Jakob dro til Sukkot, og bygde seg et hus og laget løvhytter for buskapen. Derfor kalte han stedet Sukkot.

And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

Så kom Jakob til byen Salem, som ligger i landet Kanaan, da han kom fra Paddan-Aram, og han slo opp teltet sitt foran byen.

And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram; and pitched his tent before the city.

Han kjøpte en del av marken hvor han hadde slått opp teltet, av barna til Hamor, Sjekems far, for hundre sølvpenger.

And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.

Der satte han opp et alter, og kalte det El Elohe Israel.

And he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-Israel.
