And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

Da så Sikem, sønn av Hivitten Hamor, landets fyrste, henne. Han tok henne, lå med henne og vanæret henne.

And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

Men hans sjel knyttet seg til Dinah, Jakobs datter, og han elsket jomfruen og talte vennlig til henne.

And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

Sikem talte også til sin far Hamor og sa: "Få denne jomfruen til kone for meg."

And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, t me this damsel to wife.

Jakob hørte at han hadde vanæret Dinah, hans datter, men hans sønner var på marken med buskapen, så Jakob holdt seg taus til de kom.

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

Hivitten Hamor, Sikems far, dro da til Jakob for å snakke med ham.

And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.

Da Jakobs sønner hørte det, kom de tilbake fra marken. De ble svært opprørte og sinte, fordi Sikem hadde gjort en urett i Israel ved å ligge med Jakobs datter. Dette skulle ikke ha skjedd.

And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.

Hamor snakket med dem og sa: "Min sønn Sikem lengter etter din datter. Jeg ber dere, gi henne til kone for ham.

And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem lonth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.

Gifte dere med oss, gi oss deres døtre og ta våre døtre for dere.

And make ye marrias with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.

Dere skal bo hos oss, og landet skal ligge foran dere. Bo der, handel og bosett dere der."

And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and t you possessions therein.

Sikem sa til hennes far og brødre: "La meg finne nåde for deres øyne, og hva dere enn sier til meg, skal jeg gi.

And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.

Be meg om så mye brudepris og gave som dere vil, så skal jeg gi som dere sier til meg. Men gi meg jomfruen til kone."

Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.

Jakobs sønner svarte Sikem og hans far Hamor bedragersk, fordi han hadde vanæret deres søster Dinah.

And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

De sa til dem: "Vi kan ikke gjøre dette, å gi vår søster til en som er uomskåret, for det ville være en skam for oss.

And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:

Bare under denne betingelsen vil vi gå med på det: at dere blir som oss, og at hver mann blant dere blir omskåret.

But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;

Da vil vi gi våre døtre til dere og ta deres døtre til oss. Vi vil bo hos dere og bli ett folk.

Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

Men hvis dere ikke går med på å bli omskåret, vil vi ta vår datter og dra vår vei."

But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.

Deres ord falt i god jord hos Hamor og Sikem, Hamors sønn.

And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.

Den unge mannen gjorde straks det som ble krevd, fordi han hadde glede i Jakobs datter. Han var mer aktet enn alle i sin fars hus.

And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.

Hamor og Sikem dro til byporten og talte til mennene i byen sin og sa:

And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,

"Disse menneskene er fredelige mot oss. La dem bo i landet og handle der. Se, landet er stort nok for dem. La oss ta deres døtre til koner og gi dem våre døtre.

These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is lar enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

Men bare under denne betingelsen vil mennene gå med på å bo hos oss og bli ett folk: at hver mann blant oss lar seg omskjære, slik som de er omskåret.

Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

Vil ikke deres buskap, eiendeler og alle deres dyr bli våre? La oss bare gå med på dem, så vil de bo hos oss."

Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.

Og alle mennene som gikk ut av byporten, hørte på Hamor og hans sønn Sikem, og hver mann ble omskåret, alle som gikk ut av byporten.

And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

Den tredje dagen, mens de fremdeles hadde vondt, tok to av Jakobs sønner, Simeon og Levi, Dinahs brødre, sine sverd, kom dristig over byen og drepte alle mennene der.

And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

De drepte også Hamor og hans sønn Sikem med sverdets egg, hentet Dinah ut av Sikems hus, og dro av sted.

And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the ed of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.

Jakobs sønner kom over de drepte og plyndret byen fordi deres søster var blitt vanæret.

The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.

De tok småfe, storfe, esler og alt av verdi som var i byen og på marken.

They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,

Alt av rikdom, alle barn og koner tok de som fanger, og plyndret alt som var i husene.

And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.

Jakob sa til Simeon og Levi: "Dere har ført ulykke over meg ved å gjøre meg forhatt blant landets innbyggere, blant kanaaneerne og perisittene. Jeg er fåtallig, og hvis de samler seg mot meg og angriper meg, vil jeg bli utslettet, jeg og mitt hus."

And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves tother against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

Men de svarte: "Skulle han få behandle vår søster som en skjøge?"

And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?
