Og Gud sa til Jakob: Reis opp, dra til Betel og bo der, og lag et alter der til Gud som viste seg for deg da du flyktet fra Esau, din bror.

And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.

Da sa Jakob til sin husstand og alle som var med ham: Kast bort de fremmede gudene som er blant dere, rens dere, og skift klær.

Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the stran gods that are among you, and be clean, and chan your garments:

La oss reise opp og dra til Betel; der vil jeg lage et alter til Gud, som svarte meg på min nødens dag og som var med meg på veien jeg vandret.

And let us arise, and go up to Beth-el; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.

Da ga de Jakob alle de fremmede gudene de hadde, og alle sine øredobber som de hadde i ørene, og Jakob gjemte dem under eiken ved Sikem.

And they gave unto Jacob all the stran gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

Så dro de videre, og Guds frykt var over byene rundt dem, slik at de ikke forfulgte Jakobs sønner.

And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

Og Jakob kom til Luz i Kanaans land, det som er Betel, han og hele folket som var med ham.

So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Beth-el, he and all the people that were with him.

Han bygde et alter der og kalte stedet El-Betel, for der hadde Gud vist seg for ham da han flyktet fra sin bror.

And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

Men Debora, Rebekkas amme, døde, og hun ble begravet nedenfor Betel under en eik, og stedet ble kalt Allon-Bakut.

But Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Beth-el under an oak: and the name of it was called Allon-bachuth.

Gud viste seg for Jakob igjen etter at han kom tilbake fra Paddan-Aram, og velsignet ham.

And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padan-aram, and blessed him.

Gud sa til ham: Ditt navn er Jakob; du skal ikke lenger kalles Jakob, men Israel skal være ditt navn. Og han kalte ham Israel.

And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.

Gud sa til ham: Jeg er Gud den Allmektige. Bli fruktbar og mangfoldig; en nasjon og en samfunn av nasjoner skal komme fra deg, og konger skal komme fra ditt folk.

And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;

Det landet jeg ga Abraham og Isak, vil jeg gi til deg, og til din ætt etter deg vil jeg gi landet.

And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.

Og Gud gikk bort fra ham der hvor han hadde snakket med ham.

And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.

Jakob satte opp en støtte der hvor Gud hadde snakket med ham, en steinstøtte, og han helte ut et drikkoffer på den og helte olje over den.

And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.

Jakob kalte stedet der Gud hadde snakket med ham, Betel.

And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Beth-el.

De dro fra Betel, og mens det ennå var et stykke igjen til Efrat, begynte Rakel å føde og hadde store fødselsveer.

And they journeyed from Beth-el; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.

Mens hun hadde store fødselsveer, sa jordmoren til henne: Frykt ikke, du skal også få denne sønnen.

And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.

Da hennes sjel forlot henne, for hun døde, ga hun ham navnet Ben-Oni, men hans far kalte ham Benjamin.

And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin.

Rakel døde og ble begravet på veien til Efrat, som er Betlehem.

And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Beth-lehem.

Jakob reiste en støtte på hennes grav; det er Rachels gravstøtte til denne dag.

And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.

Israel dro videre og slo opp sitt telt bortenfor Migdal-Eder.

And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.

Mens Israel bodde i det landet, gikk Ruben og lå med Bilha, sin fars medhustru, og Israel fikk vite det. Nå var Jakobs sønner tolv.

And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

Leas sønner: Ruben, Jakobs førstefødte, Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issakar og Sebulon.

The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun:

Rachels sønner: Josef og Benjamin.

The sons of Rachel; Joseph, and Benjamin:

Bilha, Rachels tjenestekvinne, sine sønner: Dan og Naftali.

And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali:

Sønnene til Silpa, Leas tjenestekvinne: Gad og Asjer. Disse er Jakobs sønner som ble født ham i Paddan-Aram.

And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid; Gad, and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Padan-aram.

Jakob kom til sin far Isak i Mamre, ved Kirjat-Arba, som er Hebron, hvor Abraham og Isak bodde som fremmede.

And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

Dagene til Isak var hundre og åtti år.

And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years.

Isak utåndet, døde og ble samlet til sitt folk, gammel og mett av dager, og hans sønner, Esau og Jakob, begravde ham.

And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
