Adam var sammen med sin kone Eva, og hun ble gravid og fødte Kain. Da sa hun: Jeg har fått en sønn fra Herren.

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

Så fødte hun igjen, denne gangen hans bror Abel. Abel ble en sauegjeter, mens Kain ble en jordbruker.

And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

Etter en tid skjedde det at Kain brakte en offergave til Herren fra markens grøde.

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

Også Abel brakte en gave, av de førstefødte lammene fra flokken og fettet fra dem. Herren så med velvilje på Abel og hans offer,

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

men på Kain og hans offer så han ikke med velvilje. Da ble Kain svært sint, og han senket hodet.

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

Herren sa til Kain: Hvorfor er du sint? Og hvorfor senker du hodet?

And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

Om du gjør det som er godt, vil du ikke da bli akseptert? Men hvis du ikke gjør det som er godt, ligger synden på lur ved døren. Den har lyst på deg, men du skal herske over den.

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

Kain snakket med sin bror Abel. Og mens de var ute på marken, reiste Kain seg mot sin bror Abel og drepte ham.

And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

Herren sa til Kain: Hvor er din bror Abel? Han svarte: Jeg vet ikke. Er jeg min brors vokter?

And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?

Herren sa: Hva har du gjort? Din brors blod roper til meg fra jorden.

And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

Nå er du forbannet fra jorden, som har åpnet sin munn for å ta imot din brors blod fra din hånd.

And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

Når du dyrker jorden, skal den ikke lenger gi deg sin styrke. Du skal være en flyktning og omstreifer på jorden.

When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

Kain sa til Herren: Min straff er større enn jeg kan bære.

And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

Se, du har i dag drevet meg bort fra jordens overflate, og jeg skal være skjult fra ditt ansikt. Jeg skal være en flyktning og omstreifer på jorden; og det skal skje at hver den som finner meg, vil drepe meg.

Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

Men Herren sa til ham: Derfor, hvis noen dreper Kain, skal hevn tas over ham sju ganger. Og Herren satte et tegn på Kain, så ingen som fant ham, skulle drepe ham.

And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, venance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

Så dro Kain bort fra Herrens nærhet og bosatte seg i landet Nod, øst for Eden.

And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

Kain var sammen med sin kone, og hun ble gravid og fødte Enok. Kain bygde en by og kalte byen etter sin sønn, Enok.

And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

Enok fikk en sønn ved navn Irad, Irad ble far til Mehujael, Mehujael ble far til Metusael, og Metusael ble far til Lamek.

And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

Lamek tok seg to koner. Den ene het Ada, og den andre het Silla.

And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

Ada fødte Jabal; han ble stamfar til dem som bor i telt og har fe.

And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

Hans bror het Jubal; han ble stamfar til alle som spiller harpe og fløyte.

And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.

Silla fødte også Tubal-Kain, som smidde redskaper i bronse og jern. Tubal-Kains søster var Naama.

And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

Lamek sa til sine koner: Ada og Silla, hør min stemme; dere Lameks koner, hør mine ord: Jeg har drept en mann for et sår, en ung mann for en skade.

And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

Hvis Kain blir hevnet sju ganger, skal Lamek bli det sytti ganger sju.

If Cain shall be avend sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

Adam var sammen med sin kone igjen, og hun fødte en sønn som hun kalte Set. Hun sa: Gud har gitt meg en annen sønn i stedet for Abel, som Kain drepte.

And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

Set fikk også en sønn, som han kalte Enos. Da begynte folk å påkalle Herrens navn.

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
