Da Jakob så at det var korn i Egypt, sa han til sønnene sine: Hvorfor står dere der og ser på hverandre?

Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?

Og han sa: Se, jeg har hørt at det er korn i Egypt. Reis dit ned og kjøp for oss, så vi kan leve og ikke dø.

And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: t you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.

Og ti av Josefs brødre drog ned for å kjøpe korn i Egypt.

And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.

Men Benjamin, Josefs bror, sendte Jakob ikke med brødrene; for han sa: Kanskje vil en ulykke ramme ham.

But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.

Israels sønner kom sammen med andre for å kjøpe korn, for hungersnøden var i Kanaans land.

And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

Josef var guvernør over landet, og han solgte korn til alle folkene der. Josefs brødre kom og bøyde seg for ham med ansiktet mot jorden.

And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

Da Josef så brødrene sine, kjente han dem igjen, men han gjorde seg ukjent for dem og snakket hardt til dem. Han sa: Hvor kommer dere fra? De svarte: Fra Kanaans land for å kjøpe mat.

And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself stran unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

Josef kjente igjen brødrene sine, men de kjente ikke igjen ham.

And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.

Josef husket drømmene han hadde drømt om dem, og sa til dem: Dere er spioner. Dere har kommet for å se hvor landet er ubeskyttet.

And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

De sa til ham: Nei, herre, vi har kommet for å kjøpe mat.

And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.

Vi er alle brødre, sønner av én mann. Vi er ærlige menn, ikke spioner.

We are all one man's sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies.

Han sa til dem: Nei, dere er kommet for å se hvor landet er ubeskyttet.

And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

De svarte: Din tjeneres tolv brødre er vi, sønner av én mann i Kanaans land. Den yngste er nå hjemme hos vår far, og en er ikke mer.

And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the younst is this day with our father, and one is not.

Josef sa til dem: Det er som jeg sa til dere, dere er spioner.

And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:

På denne måten skal dere prøves: Ved faraos liv, dere skal ikke reise herfra uten at deres yngste bror kommer hit.

Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your younst brother come hither.

Send en av dere for å hente broren deres. Imens skal dere holdes i fengsel, så ordene deres kan prøves, om dere snakker sant. Hvis ikke, så er dere ved faraos liv sikkert spioner.

Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.

Og han satte dem alle sammen i fengsel i tre dager.

And he put them all tother into ward three days.

På den tredje dagen sa Josef til dem: Dette skal dere gjøre for å få leve, for jeg frykter Gud.

And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:

Hvis dere er ærlige menn, la en av brødrene deres være igjen i fengselet, mens dere andre reiser hjem med korn for å stagge hungersnøden i deres hjem.

If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:

Men ta hit den yngste broren deres så ordene deres kan bevises, og dere ikke skal dø. Og de gjorde så.

But bring your younst brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.

Da sa de til hverandre: Vi er virkelig skyldige når det gjelder vår bror, fordi vi så sorgen i hans sjel da han ba oss, men vi hørte ikke. Derfor har denne trengsel kommet over oss.

And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

Ruben svarte dem og sa: Sa jeg ikke til dere at dere ikke måtte synde mot barnet? Men dere ville ikke høre, og se, nå kreves hans blod.

And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.

Men de ante ikke at Josef forsto dem, for han snakket til dem gjennom en tolk.

And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.

Han vendte seg bort fra dem og gråt. Så snudde han seg tilbake til dem igjen og snakket med dem. Og han tok Simeon fra dem og bandt ham foran øynene deres.

And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.

Josef befalte så at sekkene deres skulle fylles med korn, at hver manns penger ble lagt tilbake i sekken hans, og at de skulle få forsyninger for reisen. Og slik gjorde han med dem.

Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them.

Da lastet de sine esler med kornet og reiste derfra.

And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence.

En av dem åpnet sekken sin for å gi eselet sitt fôr på herberget, og så sitt eget penger der; for se, det lå i sekkens åpning.

And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth.

Han sa til brødrene sine: Mine penger er blitt tilbakebetalt; ja, det ligger i sekken min. Da mistet de motet og kvapp av redsel og sa til hverandre: Hva er dette som Gud har gjort mot oss?

And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?

Da de kom tilbake til Jakob, sin far i Kanaans land, fortalte de ham alt som hadde hendt dem, og sa:

And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying,

Mannen som hersker over landet snakket hardt til oss og mente vi var spioner.

The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.

Men vi sa til ham: Vi er ærlige menn, ikke spioner.

And we said unto him, We are true men; we are no spies:

Vi er tolv brødre, sønner av én far. En er ikke lenger, og den yngste er nå hos vår far i Kanaans land.

We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the younst is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

Herren over landet sa til oss: På denne måten kan jeg vite at dere er ærlige menn: La en av brødrene deres bli hos meg, ta så mat for hungersnøden i hjemmene deres og dra av sted.

And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:

Men ta hit deres yngste bror til meg, så jeg kan vite dere ikke er spioner, men ærlige menn. Da vil jeg gi dere tilbake broren deres og dere kan fritt handle i landet.

And bring your younst brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land.

Og da de tømte sekkene sine, se, hver manns bundel med penger lå i sekken deres. Da de og deres far så pengepakkene, ble de redde.

And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.

Jakob, deres far, sa til dem: Dere har gjort meg barnløs; Josef er borte, Simeon er borte, og nå vil dere ta Benjamin også. Alt dette kommer over meg.

And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.

Ruben sa til faren sin: Slå mine to sønner i hjel hvis jeg ikke får ham tilbake til deg. Overlat ham i min hånd, så skal jeg bringe ham tilbake til deg.

And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.

Han svarte: Min sønn skal ikke dra ned med dere, for hans bror er død, og han er alene igjen. Hvis noe skulle ramme ham på reisen dere drar på, vil dere bringe mitt grå hår med sorg ned i graven.

And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
