Og hungersnøden var alvorlig i landet.

And the famine was sore in the land.

Da de hadde spist opp kornet de hadde hentet fra Egypt, sa faren deres til dem: Dra tilbake og kjøp litt mat til oss.

And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.

Juda svarte ham og sa: Mannen ga oss en sterk advarsel og sa: Dere får ikke se mitt ansikt uten at deres bror er med.

And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

Hvis du sender vår bror med oss, skal vi dra ned og kjøpe mat til deg.

If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:

Men hvis du ikke sender ham, vil vi ikke dra ned, for mannen sa til oss: Dere får ikke se mitt ansikt uten at deres bror er med.

But if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

Da sa Israel: Hvorfor har dere gjort så ille mot meg ved å fortelle mannen at dere hadde en bror?

And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?

De svarte: Mannen spurte nøye om oss og vår slekt, og sa: Lever deres far ennå? Har dere en annen bror? Og vi svarte ham slik han spurte oss. Hvordan kunne vi vite at han ville si: Ta med deres bror ned?

And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?

Juda sa til sin far Israel: Send gutten med meg, så vi kan dra av sted, at vi kan leve og ikke dø, både vi og du og også våre små.

And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.

Jeg vil garantere ham; av min hånd kan du kreve ham. Hvis jeg ikke tar ham tilbake til deg og lar ham stå foran deg, skal jeg bære skylden for alltid.

I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:

Hvis vi ikke hadde nølt, kunne vi nå ha vært tilbake en andre gang.

For except we had linred, surely now we had returned this second time.

Da sa deres far Israel til dem: Hvis det må være slik, så gjør dette: Ta av de beste fruktene i landet i deres sekker, og gi mannen en gave, litt balsam og litt honning, krydder og myrra, nøtter og mandler.

And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:

Og ta dobbelt med penger i hånden deres, og pengene som ble lagt tilbake i munnen på sekkene deres, ta dem med igjen. Kanskje var det en feil.

And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight:

Ta også deres bror, reis og dra tilbake til mannen.

Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:

Måtte Gud den allmektige gi dere nåde for mannen, så han lar deres andre bror og Benjamin gå. Hvis jeg mister mine barn, så er jeg berøvet barn.

And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

Mennene tok gaven, tok dobbelt med penger i hånden, og Benjamin; og de reiste og dro ned til Egypt og sto foran Josef.

And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.

Da Josef så Benjamin med dem, sa han til lederen for sitt hus: Ta disse mennene med hjem, slakt og gjør i stand, for disse mennene skal spise med meg til middag.

And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.

Mannen gjorde som Josef hadde sagt, og han førte mennene inn i Josefs hus.

And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house.

Mennene ble redde fordi de ble ført inn i Josefs hus, og de sa: Det er på grunn av pengene som ble lagt tilbake i sekkene våre første gang, at vi blir tatt inn, så han kan finne en anledning mot oss, kaste seg over oss og gjøre oss til slaver, og ta våre esler.

And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.

De gikk bort til mannen som hadde ansvar for Josefs hus, og snakket med ham ved inngangen til huset,

And they came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they communed with him at the door of the house,

og sa: Herre, vi kom faktisk ned første gang for å kjøpe mat,

And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food:

men da vi kom til vertshuset, åpnet vi sekkene våre, og se, hver manns penger lå i munnen på sekken, våre penger i full vekt, og vi har tatt dem med tilbake i hånden.

And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.

Og vi har også tatt med andre penger for å kjøpe mat: vi vet ikke hvem som la pengene våre i sekkene.

And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.

Han sa: Fred være med dere, frykt ikke. Deres Gud og deres fars Gud har gitt dere en skatt i deres sekker. Jeg hadde pengene deres. Og han førte Simeon ut til dem.

And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.

Mannen førte mennene inn i Josefs hus, ga dem vann så de kunne vaske føttene sine, og ga fôr til eslene deres.

And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.

De forberedte gaven før Josef kom til middag, for de hadde hørt at de skulle spise der.

And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.

Da Josef kom hjem, brakte de gaven de hadde med seg inn i huset, og bøyde seg til jorden for ham.

And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

Han spurte dem hvordan de hadde det og sa: Hvordan har deres far det, den gamle mannen dere talte om? Lever han ennå?

And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive?

De svarte: Din tjener, vår far, har det bra, han lever ennå. Og de bøyde seg dypt ned.

And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance.

Han løftet blikket og så sin bror Benjamin, sin mors sønn, og sa: Er dette deres yngste bror, han dere talte om? Og han sa: Gud være deg nådig, min sønn.

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younr brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.

Josef skyndte seg bort, for hjertet hans var sterkt rørt for sin bror, og han søkte et sted å gråte. Han gikk inn i sitt kammer og gråt der.

And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.

Deretter vasket han ansiktet sitt, gikk ut, behersket seg, og sa: Sett på maten.

And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread.

De satte på mat for ham alene, og for dem alene, og for egypterne som spiste med ham, for egypterne kan ikke spise sammen med hebreerne; det er en styggedom for egypterne.

And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

De satt ovenfor ham, den eldste etter førstefødselsretten og den yngste etter sin ungdom, og mennene undret seg over hverandre.

And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the younst according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another.

Han sendte dem porsjoner fra sitt bord, men Benjamins porsjon var fem ganger så stor som noen av de andres. Og de drakk og var glade sammen med ham.

And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.
