And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth.

Og legg koppen min, sølvkoppen, i munningen av den yngstes sekk, sammen med kornpengene hans. Og forvalteren gjorde som Joseph hadde sagt.

And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the younst, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

Så snart det ble lyst om morgenen, ble mennene sendt av sted, de selv og eslene deres.

As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.

Da de hadde forlatt byen og ikke hadde kommet langt, sa Joseph til forvalteren sin: Skynd deg, følg etter mennene, og når du innhenter dem, si til dem: Hvorfor har dere gjengjeldt godt med ondt?

And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?

Er ikke dette koppen som min herre drikker av, og som han bruker til å spå med? Det dere har gjort er ondt.

Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

Og han innhentet dem, og sa disse samme ordene til dem.

And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.

Og de sa til ham: Hvorfor sier min herre disse ordene? Gud forby at dine tjenere skulle gjøre noe slikt.

And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:

Se, pengene som vi fant i sekkenes munning, tok vi med tilbake til deg fra Kanaans land. Hvorfor skulle vi da stjele sølv eller gull fra din herres hus?

Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold?

Den av dine tjenere som koppen finnes hos, han skal dø, og vi vil bli min herres slaver.

With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondmen.

Og han sa: La det være som dere sier; den som koppen finnes hos, skal være min slave, og dere andre skal være uskyldige.

And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.

Da skyndte de seg å ta ned hver sin sekk til bakken og åpnet hver sin sekk.

Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

Og han lette fra den eldste til den yngste, og koppen ble funnet i Benjamins sekk.

And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the younst: and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

Da rev de klærne sine, lastet hver sitt esel og vendte tilbake til byen.

Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.

Og Juda og brødrene hans kom til huset til Joseph, for han var fortsatt der, og de falt ned foran ham på bakken.

And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.

Og Joseph sa til dem: Hva er det dere har gjort? Visste dere ikke at en mann som jeg kan spå med dette?

And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?

Og Juda sa: Hva skal vi si til min herre? Hva skal vi snakke, eller hvordan skal vi rettferdiggjøre oss? Gud har avdekket din tjeneres skyld; vi er min herres tjenere, både vi og han koppen ble funnet hos.

And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

Og han sa: Gud forby at jeg skulle gjøre dette. Mannen som koppen ble funnet hos, han skal være min slave, men dere andre kan dra tilbake i fred til faren deres.

And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, t you up in peace unto your father.

Da trådte Juda nærmere og sa: Å, min herre, la meg tale et ord i din herres ører, og la ikke din vrede brenne mot din tjener, for du er som farao.

Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anr burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.

Min herre spurte sine tjenere og sa: Har dere en far eller en bror?

My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?

Og vi sa til min herre: Vi har en far, en gammel mann, og en ung sønn av hans alderdom, som er liten, og hans bror er død, og han er den eneste som er igjen etter hans mor, og faren elsker ham.

And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old a, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.

Og du sa til dine tjenere: Bring ham ned til meg, så jeg kan få se ham.

And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.

Og vi sa til min herre: Gutten kan ikke forlate sin far, for hvis han forlater sin far, vil faren dø.

And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

Og du sa til dine tjenere: Hvis ikke deres yngste bror kommer med dere, vil dere ikke få se meg igjen.

And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your younst brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

Og det skjedde da vi kom tilbake til din tjener vår far, at vi fortalte ham min herres ord.

And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

Og vår far sa: Dra tilbake og kjøp oss litt mat.

And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.

Og vi sa: Vi kan ikke dra ned; hvis vår yngste bror er med oss, da vil vi dra ned, for vi kan ikke møte mannen uten at vår yngste bror er med oss.

And we said, We cannot go down: if our younst brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, except our younst brother be with us.

Og din tjener min far sa til oss: Dere vet at min kone fødte meg to sønner.

And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:

Og den ene gikk ut fra meg, og jeg sa: Sannelig, han er revet i stykker; og jeg har ikke sett ham siden.

And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:

Og hvis dere også tar denne fra meg, og en ulykke hender ham, vil dere bringe mitt grå hår ned i graven med sorg.

And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

Så nå, når jeg kommer til din tjener min far, og gutten ikke er med oss, og hans liv er knyttet til guttenes liv;

Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life;

Det vil skje at når han ser at gutten ikke er med oss, vil han dø, og dine tjenere vil føre din tjeners, vår fars, grå hår med sorg ned i graven.

It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

For din tjener ble garantist for gutten overfor min far, og sa: Hvis jeg ikke bringer ham tilbake til deg, skal jeg bære skylden for alltid.

For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.

Så la nå din tjener bli igjen i stedet for gutten som min herres slave, og la gutten dra opp sammen med sine brødre.

Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

For hvordan skal jeg dra opp til min far hvis gutten ikke er med meg? La meg ikke se den ulykken som da vil ramme min far.

For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.
