Da kom Josef og sa til farao: Min far og mine brødre, med deres småfe og storfe, og alt de eier, er kommet fra Kanaans land. Se, de er i landet Gosen.

Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.

Og han tok med seg noen av sine brødre, fem menn, og presenterte dem for farao.

And he took some of his brethren, even five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh.

Og farao spurte hans brødre: Hva er deres yrke? Og de svarte til farao: Dine tjenere er gjetere, både vi og våre fedre.

And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and also our fathers.

De fortsatte å si til farao: Vi har kommet for å bo som fremmede i landet, for dine tjenere har ingen beitemarker til buskapen, fordi hungersnøden er stor i Kanaans land. Nå ber vi deg, la dine tjenere bo i landet Gosen.

They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.

Da sa farao til Josef: Din far og dine brødre er kommet til deg.

And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee:

Egypternes land er åpent for deg; la din far og dine brødre bo i det beste av landet. La dem bo i landet Gosen. Og hvis du vet om noen dyktige mennesker blant dem, så sett dem til å ha ansvar for min buskap.

The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.

Og Josef førte inn Jakob, sin far, og stilte ham foran farao, og Jakob velsignet farao.

And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

Farao spurte Jakob: Hvor gammel er du?

And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How old art thou?

Og Jakob svarte farao: Jeg har vandret i fremmed land i hundre og tretti år. Få og vanskelige har mine leveår vært, og de har ikke nådd opp til årene i livet til mine fedre i deres fremmedlandsvandring.

And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrima are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrima.

Jakob velsignet farao og gikk ut fra faraos nærvær.

And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.

Og Josef plasserte sin far og sine brødre, og ga dem en eiendom i Egypt, i det beste av landet, i landet Ramses, som farao hadde pålagt.

And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

Og Josef sørget for at hans far, hans brødre og hele hans fars husstand fikk mat, i henhold til deres antall.

And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, according to their families.

Det var ingen mat i hele landet, for hungersnøden var meget stor. Egypt og hele Kanaans land ble utmattet av hungersnøden.

And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.

Josef samlet inn alle pengene som fantes i Egypt og i Kanaans land for kornet de kjøpte. Og Josef brakte pengene inn i faraos hus.

And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.

Da pengene tok slutt i Egypt og i Kanaan, kom alle egypterne til Josef og sa: Gi oss brød, for hvorfor skal vi dø foran deg? For pengene er oppbrukt.

And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth.

Josef sa: Gi meg buskapen deres, så skal jeg gi dere brød i bytte, hvis pengene er oppbrukt.

And Joseph said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail.

De brakte sin buskap til Josef, og Josef ga dem brød i bytte for hester, småfe, storfe og esler. På den måten forsynte han dem med brød det året i bytte for all deres buskap.

And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchan for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year.

Da det året var omme, kom de til ham neste år og sa: Vi vil ikke skjule det for Herren vår, alle pengene er brukt opp, og Herrens hus eier buskapen vår. Vi har ingenting igjen, uten kroppene våre og våre landområder.

When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide it from my lord, how that our money is spent; my lord also hath our herds of cattle; there is not ought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands:

Hvorfor skal vi dø foran øynene dine, både vi og landet vårt? Kjøp oss og landet vårt for brød, så skal vi bli tjenere for farao. Gi oss såkorn, så vi kan leve og ikke dø, og så landet ikke ligger øde.

Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate.

Og Josef kjøpte hele Egyptens land for farao. Alle egypterne solgte sine jorder fordi nøden presset dem. Slik ble landet faraos eiendom.

And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh's.

Når det gjelder folket, flyttet han dem til byene, fra den ene enden av Egypts grense til den andre.

And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof.

Kun priesternes jord kjøpte han ikke, for prestene fikk sitt daglige utkomme av farao, og de spiste av den del farao ga dem. Derfor solgte de ikke sin land.

Only the land of the priests bought he not; for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them: wherefore they sold not their lands.

Josef sa til folket: Se, jeg har denne dag kjøpt dere og landet deres for farao. Her har dere såkorn, og dere skal så jorden.

Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land.

Og når avlingen kommer, skal dere gi en femtedel til farao, og fire deler skal være deres egen til såkorn for åkrene, til mat for dere selv, for de i deres husholdninger og til mat for deres barn.

And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.

Da sa de: Du har reddet våre liv. La oss finne nåde for dine øyne, vår herre, så skal vi være tjenere for farao.

And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants.

Josef innførte en lov over Egypts land, som gjelder til denne dag, at en femtedel skulle tilhøre farao. Bare præstenes land ble ikke faraos.

And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part; except the land of the priests only, which became not Pharaoh's.

Israel bosatte seg i Egypts land, i Gosen, og der fikk de eiendommer. De vokste og ble meget tallrike.

And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly.

Jakob levde i Egypts land i sytten år, så alt Jakob levde var hundre og førtisyv år.

And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole a of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years.

Da nærmet tiden seg for Israels død, og han kalte sin sønn Josef til seg og sa: Hvis jeg har funnet nåde for dine øyne, legg da din hånd under mitt lår og vis meg troskap og godhet: Ikke gravlegg meg i Egypt.

And the time drew nigh that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt:

Når jeg har gått til hvile hos mine fedre, skal du føre meg ut av Egypt og begrave meg i deres gravsted. Han svarte: Jeg skal gjøre som du har sagt.

But I will lie with my fathers, and thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their buryingplace. And he said, I will do as thou hast said.

Da sa han: Sverg for meg. Og han svor for ham. Og Israel bøyde seg i ærbødighet ved sengens hode.

And he said, Swear unto me. And he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed's head.
