Etter disse hendelsene ble det fortalt til Josef: Se, din far er syk, og han tok med seg sine to sønner, Manasse og Efraim.

And it came to pass after these things, that one told Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick: and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

Og noen fortalte det til Jakob og sa: Se, din sønn Josef kommer til deg. Da styrket Israel seg selv og satte seg opp i sengen.

And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.

Og Jakob sa til Josef: Gud Den Allmektige viste seg for meg i Luz i Kanaans land og velsignet meg.

And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

Og han sa til meg: Se, jeg vil gjøre deg fruktbar og tallrik, og jeg vil gjøre deg til en stor folkemengde; og jeg vil gi dette landet til din ætt etter deg som en evig eiendom.

And said unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a multitude of people; and will give this land to thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession.

Og nå er dine to sønner, Efraim og Manasse, som ble født til deg i Egypt før jeg kom til deg dit, mine; som Ruben og Simeon skal de være mine.

And now thy two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.

Og de barn du føder etter dem, skal være dine, og de skal kalles ved navn etter sine brødre i deres arv.

And thy issue, which thou bettest after them, shall be thine, and shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance.

Men da jeg kom fra Paddan, døde Rakel ved min side i Kanaans land på veien, da det ennå var et stykke vei til Efrat; og jeg begravde henne der på veien til Efrat, som er Betlehem.

And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same is Beth-lehem.

Og Israel så Josefs sønner og sa: Hvem er disse?

And Israel beheld Joseph's sons, and said, Who are these?

Og Josef sa til sin far: Dette er mine sønner, som Gud har gitt meg her. Og han sa: Bring dem til meg, jeg ber deg, så vil jeg velsigne dem.

And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them.

Nå var Israels øyne svekket på grunn av alder, slik at han ikke kunne se. Og han førte dem nær til ham; og han kysset dem og omfavnet dem.

Now the eyes of Israel were dim for a, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them.

Og Israel sa til Josef: Jeg hadde ikke trodd at jeg skulle få se ditt ansikt igjen, og se, Gud har til og med vist meg din ætt.

And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed.

Og Josef tok dem ut fra mellom sine knær, og han bøyde seg med ansiktet mot jorden.

And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.

Og Josef tok dem begge, Efraim i sin høyre hånd mot Israels venstre hånd, og Manasse i sin venstre hånd mot Israels høyre hånd, og førte dem nær til ham.

And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near unto him.

Og Israel rakte ut sin høyre hånd og la den på Efraims hode, som var den yngste, og sin venstre hånd på Manasses hode og korsla armene med vilje; for Manasse var den førstefødte.

And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younr, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.

Og han velsignet Josef og sa: Gud, for hvem mine fedre Abraham og Isak vandret, Gud som har tatt vare på meg hele mitt liv til denne dag,

And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day,

Engelen, som reddet meg fra alt ondt, velsigne guttene; og la mitt navn leve videre gjennom dem, og mine fedres navn Abraham og Isak; og la dem vokse til en stor mengde midt i jorden.

The Anl which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

Da Josef så at hans far la sin høyre hånd på Efraims hode, var dette misbehagelig for ham, og han tok fatt i sin fars hånd for å flytte den fra Efraims hode til Manasses hode.

And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head.

Og Josef sa til sin far: Ikke slik, min far, for dette er den førstefødte; legg din høyre hånd på hans hode.

And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.

Men hans far nektet og sa: Jeg vet det, min sønn, jeg vet det. Han skal også bli til et folk, og han skal også bli stor; men hans yngre bror skal bli større enn ham, og hans ætt skal bli til en mengde av nasjoner.

And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younr brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

Og han velsignet dem den dagen, idet han sa: I deg skal Israel velsigne, idet de sier: Gud gjøre deg som Efraim og som Manasse. Og han satte Efraim foran Manasse.

And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

Og Israel sa til Josef: Se, jeg dør; men Gud skal være med dere og føre dere tilbake til deres fedres land.

And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers.

Dessuten har jeg gitt deg en del mer enn dine brødre, den som jeg tok fra amorittene med mitt sverd og min bue.

Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
