Josef kastet seg over farens ansikt, gråt over ham og kysset ham.

And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.

Og Josef befalte legene blant tjenerne sine å balsamere faren hans, og legene balsamerte Israel.

And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.

Førti dager gikk med til dette, for så mange dager går det med til balsamering. Og egypterne sørget over ham i sytti dager.

And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.

Da sørgedagene var over, talte Josef til faraos hoff og sa: Hvis jeg har funnet nåde for øynene deres, tal da for meg til farao og si:

And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

Min far fikk meg til å sverge og sa: 'Se, jeg skal dø. Begrav meg i graven som jeg gravde for meg i Kanaans land.' La meg dra opp dit og begrave min far, så kommer jeg tilbake.

My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digd for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.

Farao sa: Dra opp og begrav faren din, som han fikk deg til å sverge.

And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.

Så dro Josef opp for å begrave sin far, og med ham dro alle faraos tjenere, de eldste i hans hus, og alle de eldste i Egypts land,

And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

hele Josefs hus, hans brødre og hans fars hus. Bare småbarna, småfeet og storfeet lot de bli igjen i landet Gosen.

And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

Med ham dro også vogner og ryttere, det var en veldig stor flokk.

And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.

De kom til Gorens treskeplass ved Atad, som ligger forbi Jordan, og der holdt de en stor og inderlig sørgefest. Han sørget over sin far i syv dager.

And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

Da de som bodde i landet, kanaaneerne, så sørgen ved Gorens treskeplass, sa de: «Dette er en tung sorg for egypterne.» Derfor ble stedet kalt Abel-Misraim, som ligger forbi Jordan.

And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond Jordan.

Og hans sønner gjorde med ham som han hadde befalt dem,

And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:

for hans sønner førte ham til Kanaans land og begravde ham i hulen på Makpelahs jordstykke, som Abraham hadde kjøpt med marken fra Hetitten Efron som gravsted, foran Mamre.

For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

Josef vendte tilbake til Egypt, han og brødrene hans og alle som hadde dratt opp med ham for å begrave faren, etter at han hadde begravet ham.

And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

Da Josefs brødre så at faren var død, sa de: «Hva om Josef hater oss og absolutt vil gjengjelde oss alt det vonde vi har gjort mot ham?»

And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

De sendte bud til Josef og sa: «Din far befalte før han døde, og sa:

And they sent a messenr unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,

Så skal dere si til Josef: 'Tilgi, vær så snill, dine brødres overtredelser og synder, for de gjorde deg ondt.' Og nå, vi ber deg, tilgi overtredelsen til din fars Guds tjenere.» Da de talte til ham, gråt Josef.

So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.

Brødrene hans kom også selv og kastet seg ned foran ham og sa: «Se, vi er dine tjenere.»

And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.

Men Josef sa til dem: «Frykt ikke, for er jeg i Guds sted?

And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

Dere tenkte ondt mot meg, men Gud vendte det til gode for å bevare mye folk i live, som det går i dag.

But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

Så frykt nå ikke: Jeg vil sørge for dere og barna deres.» Han trøstet dem og talte vennlig til dem.

Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.

Josef ble boende i Egypt, han og hans fars hus. Og Josef levde i hundre og ti år.

And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.

Josef fikk se Efraims barn i tredje ledd, og også barn av Makir, sønn av Manasse, ble født på Josefs knær.

And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third neration: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees.

Josef sa til brødrene sine: «Jeg dør, men Gud vil visselig besøke dere og føre dere opp fra dette landet til det landet han lovet Abraham, Isak og Jakob.

And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

Og Josef tok et løfte av Israels barn og sa: «Gud vil visselig besøke dere, og dere skal føre mine bein opp herfra.»

And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.

Så døde Josef, hundre og ti år gammel, og de balsamerte ham og la ham i en kiste i Egypt.

So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
