I det andre året til kong Darius, i den sjette måneden, på den første dagen i måneden, kom Herrens ord ved profeten Haggai til Serubabel, sønn av Sealtiel, stattholderen i Juda, og til Josva, sønn av Josadak, ypperstepresten, og sa:

In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by gai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,

Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Dette folket sier: Tiden er ennå ikke kommet, tiden for at Herrens hus skal bli bygd.

Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD'S house should be built.

Da kom Herrens ord ved profeten Haggai og sa:

Then came the word of the LORD by gai the prophet, saying,

Er det tid for dere selv å bo i panelhusene deres, mens dette huset ligger i ruiner?

Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?

Derfor sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Tenk over hvordan dere lever.

Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

Dere har sådd mye, men høstet lite; dere har spist, men blir ikke mette; dere har drukket, men blir ikke forsynt; dere kledde dere, men blir ikke varme; og han som tjener lønn, legger den i en sekk med hull.

Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.

Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Tenk over hvordan dere lever.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

Gå opp på fjellet, hent tømmer, og bygg huset; da skal jeg ha glede i det og bli æret, sier Herren.

Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.

Dere ventet på mye, men se, det ble lite; og da dere brakte det hjem, blåste jeg det bort. Hvorfor? sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud. Fordi mitt hus ligger i ruiner, mens hver og en av dere har det travelt med sitt eget hus.

Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.

Derfor holder himmelen over dere tilbake dugg, og jorden holder tilbake sin grøde.

Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.

Jeg har kalt på tørke over landet, over fjellene, over kornet, over den nye vinen, over oljen, over alt som jorden bærer frem, over mennesker og dyr, og over alt arbeid som utføres med hendene.

And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.

Da adlød Serubabel, sønn av Sealtiel, og Josva, sønn av Josadak, ypperstepresten, sammen med hele resten av folket, stemmen til Herren deres Gud og ordene til profeten Haggai, slik Herren deres Gud hadde sendt ham. Og folket fryktet Herren.

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of gai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.

Da talte Herrens budbringer, Haggai, Herrens budskap til folket og sa: Jeg er med dere, sier Herren.

Then spake gai the LORD'S messenger in the LORD'S message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the LORD.

Og Herren vekket opp ånden til Serubabel, sønn av Sealtiel, stattholderen i Juda, ånden til Josva, sønn av Josadak, ypperstepresten, og ånden til hele resten av folket. De kom og arbeidet på huset til Herren, hærskarenes Gud, deres Gud,

And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

på den tjuefjerde dagen i den sjette måneden, i det andre året til kong Darius.

In the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
