Mine brødre, ikke hold vår Herre Jesu Kristi tro, herlighetens Herre, med forskjellsbehandling.

My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

For hvis det kommer inn i deres forsamling en mann med gullring og fine klær, og også en fattig mann i skitne klær,

For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;

og dere gir oppmerksomhet til han med de fine klærne og sier til ham: Sett deg her på en god plass, mens dere sier til den fattige: Stå der eller sitt her ved mine føtter,

And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

gjør dere ikke da forskjell mellom dere selv og blir dommere med onde tanker?

Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

Hør, mine kjære brødre, har ikke Gud utvalgt denne verdens fattige til å være rike i tro og arvinger til riket som han har lovet dem som elsker ham?

Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

Men dere har foraktet den fattige. Er det ikke de rike som undertrykker dere og drar dere for domstolene?

But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

Er det ikke de som spotter det gode navnet som dere er kalt med?

Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

Dersom dere oppfyller den kongelige lov ifølge Skriftene, 'Du skal elske din neste som deg selv,' gjør dere vel.

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

Men hvis dere viser forskjell på folk, begår dere synd og blir overbevist av loven som overtredere.

But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

For den som holder hele loven, men bare snubler på ett punkt, er skyldig i alt.

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

For han som sa: 'Du skal ikke drive hor,' sa også: 'Du skal ikke drepe.' Så dersom du ikke driver hor, men dreper, er du blitt en lovbryter.

For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

Så tal og gjør som de som skal dømmes etter frihetens lov.

So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

For dommen skal være uten barmhjertighet overfor den som ikke har vist barmhjertighet; og barmhjertighet triumferer over dommen.

For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

Hva gagner det, mine brødre, om noen sier han har tro, men ikke har gjerninger? Kan troen frelse ham?

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

Om en bror eller søster er naken og mangler daglig føde,

If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

og en av dere sier til dem: Gå i fred, bli varm og mett, men dere ikke gir dem det kroppen trenger, hva gagner det?

And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

På samme måte er troen død uten gjerninger.

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Men en kan si: Du har tro, og jeg har gjerninger. Vis meg din tro uten gjerninger, så skal jeg vise deg min tro ved mine gjerninger.

Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

Du tror at det er én Gud, det gjør du rett i; til og med demonene tror det, og skjelver.

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

Men vil du vite, tomme menneske, at tro uten gjerninger er død?

But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Ble ikke Abraham, vår far, rettferdiggjort ved gjerninger da han ofret sin sønn Isak på alteret?

Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

Ser du hvordan troen virket sammen med hans gjerninger, og ved gjerninger ble troen fullkommen?

Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

Og Skriften ble oppfylt som sier: 'Abraham trodde Gud, og det ble tilregnet ham som rettferdighet,' og han ble kalt Guds venn.

And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

Dere ser da at et menneske blir rettferdiggjort av gjerninger, og ikke bare av tro.

Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

På samme måte ble Rahab, skjøgen, også rettferdiggjort ved gjerninger da hun tok imot sendebudene og sendte dem ut en annen vei.

Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

For som kroppen uten ånd er død, så er også troen død uten gjerninger.

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
