Så sier Herren: Gå og skaff deg et leirkar fra en pottemaker, og ta med deg de eldste blant folket og blant prestene.

Thus saith the LORD, Go and get a potter's earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests;

Gå ut til Hinnoms sønns dal, som ligger ved inngangen til Østporten, og forkynn der de ordene jeg skal fortelle deg.

And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the east gate, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee,

Og si: Hør Herrens ord, dere konger av Juda og innbyggere i Jerusalem. Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Se, jeg vil føre ulykke over dette stedet, noe som vil få enhver som hører det til å få ørene til å ringe.

And say, Hear ye the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of usalem; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, the which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle.

Fordi de har forlatt meg og vanhelliget dette stedet, og brent røkelse for andre guder som verken de selv eller deres fedre eller Judas konger har kjent, og de har fylt dette stedet med uskyldiges blod.

Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;

De har også bygget offerhaugene til Baal, for å brenne sine sønner i ild som brennoffer til Baal, noe jeg ikke har befalt eller talt om, ei heller kommet i min tanke.

They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind:

Derfor, se, de dager kommer, sier Herren, at dette stedet ikke mer skal kalles Tofet, heller ikke Hinnoms sønns dal, men Slaktedalen.

Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that this place shall no more be called Tophet, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of slaughter.

Og jeg vil gjøre Judas og Jerusalems råd til intet i dette stedet. Jeg vil la dem falle for sine fienders sverd og for dem som søker deres liv, og jeg vil gi deres lik til føde for himmelens fugler og jordens dyr.

And I will make void the counsel of Judah and usalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.

Og jeg vil gjøre denne byen til ruiner, et hån, slik at enhver som går forbi skal bli sjokkert og håne på grunn av alle dens plager.

And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.

Og jeg vil få dem til å spise kjøttet av sine sønner og døtre, og de skal spise hverandres kjøtt under beleiringen og nødssituasjonen, når deres fiender og de som søker deres liv, vil trenge dem.

And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them.

Da skal du knuse flasken foran de mennene som er med deg.

Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee,

Og du skal si til dem: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: På samme måte vil jeg knuse dette folket og denne byen, slik man knuser et leirkar som ikke kan gjøres helt igjen. De skal begrave dem i Tofet inntil det ikke er mer plass å begrave.

And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter's vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.

Så vil jeg gjøre med dette stedet, sier Herren, og med dets innbyggere, og gjøre denne byen lik Tofet.

Thus will I do unto this place, saith the LORD, and to the inhabitants thereof, and even make this city as Tophet:

Husene i Jerusalem og husene til Judas konger skal bli vanhelliget som Tofet, på grunn av alle de husene på takene av hvilke de har brent røkelse for himmelens hær og utøst drikkoffer til andre guder.

And the houses of usalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be defiled as the place of Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods.

Så kom Jeremia fra Tofet, hvor Herren hadde sendt ham for å profetere, og han stod i forgården til Herrens hus og sa til hele folket:

Then came emiah from Tophet, whither the LORD had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD'S house; and said to all the people,

Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Se, jeg vil føre over denne byen og alle dens byene all den ondskap jeg har forkynt mot den, fordi de har gjort sine nakker stive og ikke vil høre mine ord.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have hardened their necks, that they might not hear my words.
