Dette er ordene fra brevet som profeten Jeremia sendte fra Jerusalem til de gjenværende av de eldste som var ført bort som fanger, og til prestene, til profetene og til hele folket som Nebukadnesar hadde ført bort i fangenskap fra Jerusalem til Babylon.

Now these are the words of the letter that emiah the prophet sent from usalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from usalem to Babylon;

(Etter at kong Jekonja, dronningen, hoffmennene, fyrsten av Juda og Jerusalem, håndverkerne og smedene hadde forlatt Jerusalem,)

(After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and usalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from usalem;)

ved Elasja, sønn av Sjafan, og Gemarja, sønn av Hilkia, som Sidkia, kongen av Juda, sendte til Babylon til Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, med dette budskap:

By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying,

Dette sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, til alle som er ført bort i fangenskap, som jeg har latt bli ført bort fra Jerusalem til Babylon:

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from usalem unto Babylon;

Bygg hus og bo i dem; plant hager og spis fruktene deres.

Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them;

Ta koner og få sønner og døtre; ta koner for sønnene deres og gi døtrene deres i ekteskap, så de kan få sønner og døtre; bli mange der, ikke bli færre.

Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.

Og søk fred i den byen jeg har ført dere i fangenskap til, og be til Herren for den; for i dens fred skal dere ha fred.

And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

For dette sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: La ikke profetene og spåmennene som er blant dere, bedra dere, og hør ikke på drømmene dere drømmer.

For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.

For de profeterer løgn til dere i mitt navn: Jeg har ikke sendt dem, sier Herren.

For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD.

For dette sier Herren: Når sytti år er fullført for Babylon, vil jeg besøke dere og oppfylle mitt gode ord mot dere ved å føre dere tilbake til dette stedet.

For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

For jeg vet hvilke tanker jeg har med dere, sier Herren, tanker om fred og ikke om ulykke, for å gi dere framtid og håp.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Da skal dere kalle på meg, og dere skal gå og be til meg, og jeg vil høre på dere.

Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

Og dere skal søke meg og finne meg når dere søker meg av hele deres hjerte.

And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Og jeg vil la dere finne meg, sier Herren: og jeg vil vende deres fangenskap, og samle dere fra alle nasjonene og fra alle stedene hvor jeg har drevet dere bort, sier Herren; og jeg vil føre dere tilbake til det stedet jeg lot dere bli ført bort i fangenskap fra.

And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

Fordi dere har sagt: Herren har oppreist profeter for oss i Babylon,

Because ye have said, The LORD hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;

Vit da at dette sier Herren om kongen som sitter på Davids trone, og om hele folket som bor i denne byen, deres brødre som ikke har gått i fangenskap med dere:

Know that thus saith the LORD of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;

Dette sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Se, jeg vil sende sverdet, hungersnøden og pesten mot dem, og gjøre dem som råtne fikener, som ikke kan spises på grunn av onde.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.

Og jeg vil forfølge dem med sverdet, hungersnøden og pesten, og gi dem til å bli bortført til alle jordens riker, til å bli en forbannelse, en skrekk, en hån og en skam blant alle de nasjonene jeg har drevet dem bort til:

And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them:

Fordi de ikke har hørt på mine ord, sier Herren, som jeg har sendt til dem ved mine tjenere profetene, som jeg har stått opp tidlig for å sende; men dere ville ikke høre, sier Herren.

Because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the LORD, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the LORD.

Hør derfor Herrens ord, alle dere som er i fangenskap, som jeg har sendt fra Jerusalem til Babylon:

Hear ye therefore the word of the LORD, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from usalem to Babylon:

Dette sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, om Ahab, sønn av Kolaia, og Sidkia, sønn av Maaseja, som profeterer løgn for dere i mitt navn; Se, jeg vil overgi dem til Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, og han skal drepe dem for deres øyne;

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name; Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;

Og av dem skal alle fangene fra Juda som er i Babylon bruke en forbannelse og si: Måtte Herren gjøre deg som Sidkia og Ahab, som kongen av Babylon brente i ilden;

And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, The LORD make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

Fordi de har gjort avskyelige ting i Israel, og har begått ekteskapsbrudd med sine naboers koner, og har talt løgnaktige ord i mitt navn, noe jeg ikke har befalt dem; jeg vet, og jeg er vitne, sier Herren.

Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours' wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith the LORD.

Og dette skal du si til Sjemaja fra Nehelam:

Thus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying,

Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Fordi du har sendt brev i ditt navn til hele folket som er i Jerusalem, og til Sefanja, sønn av Maaseja, presten, og til alle prestene, og sier:

Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at usalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

Herren har satt deg til prest i stedet for Jojada, presten, for å være tilsynsmenn i Herrens hus for hver mann som er gal og gjør seg selv til profet, at du skal sette ham i fengsel og i jern.

The LORD hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.

Hvorfor har du da ikke irettesatt Jeremia fra Anatot, som gjør seg selv til profet for dere?

Now therefore why hast thou not reproved emiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you?

For han har sendt brev til oss i Babylon og sagt: Dette fangenskapet vil vare lenge: bygg hus og bo i dem; plant hager og spis fruktene.

For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

Og Sefanja, presten, leste dette brevet for Jeremia, profeten.

And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of emiah the prophet.

Så kom Herrens ord til Jeremia og sa:

Then came the word of the LORD unto emiah, saying,

Send til alle fangene og si: Så sier Herren om Sjemaja, Nehelamiten; Fordi Sjemaja har profetert for dere, og jeg ikke har sendt ham, og han har fått dere til å tro på en løgn:

Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith the LORD concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he caused you to trust in a lie:

Derfor sier Herren: Se, jeg vil straffe Sjemaja, Nehelamiten, og hans etterkommere: han skal ikke ha noen mann som skal bo blant dette folk; heller ikke skal han se det gode som jeg vil gjøre for mitt folk, sier Herren; fordi han har lært opprør mot Herren.

Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the LORD; because he hath taught rebellion against the LORD.
