Kong Sidkia, sønn av Josjia, regjerte etter Konja, sønn av Jojakim, som Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, satte som konge i Juda.

And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

Men verken han, hans tjenere eller folkene i landet hørte på Herrens ord, som han talte gjennom profeten Jeremia.

But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet emiah.

Kongen Sidkia sendte Jehukal, sønn av Sjelemja, og Sefanja, sønn av Maaseja, presten, til profeten Jeremia og sa: Be nå til Herren vår Gud for oss.

And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet emiah, saying, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us.

Jeremia gikk fritt blant folket, for de hadde ikke satt ham i fengsel.

Now emiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.

Da drog faraos hær ut av Egypt, og da kaldeerne, som beleiret Jerusalem, hørte om dem, brøt de opp fra Jerusalem.

Then Pharaoh's army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged usalem heard tidings of them, they departed from usalem.

Da kom Herrens ord til profeten Jeremia, og sa:

Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet emiah, saying,

Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Dette skal dere si til kongen av Juda, som sendte dere til meg for å spørre: Se, faraos hær, som kom for å hjelpe dere, skal vende tilbake til Egypt, sitt eget land.

Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to inquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

Og kaldeerne skal komme tilbake og kjempe mot denne byen og innta den, og de skal sette fyr på den.

And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.

Så sier Herren: Lur ikke dere selv ved å si: Kaldeerne vil sikkert dra bort fra oss; for de drar ikke bort.

Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.

Selv om dere hadde slått hele kaldeerhæren som kjemper mot dere, og bare sårede menn var igjen, skulle de alle reise seg i sine telt og sette fyr på denne byen.

For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

Da skjedde det at kaldeerhæren brøt opp fra Jerusalem i frykt for faraos hær.

And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from usalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,

Da forlot Jeremia Jerusalem for å dra til Benjamins land for å dele seg der blant folket.

Then emiah went forth out of usalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.

Da han var ved Benjamin-porten, var det en vaktkaptein der som het Jeria, sønn av Sjelemja, sønn av Hananja; han grep profeten Jeremia og sa: Du faller fra til kaldeerne.

And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took emiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.

Jeremia svarte: Det er ikke sant; jeg faller ikke fra til kaldeerne. Men Jeria ville ikke høre på ham; så Jeria tok Jeremia og førte ham til høvdingene.

Then said emiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took emiah, and brought him to the princes.

Da ble høvdingene sinte på Jeremia, slo ham og satte ham i fengsel i skriveren Jonatans hus, for de hadde gjort det til et fengsel.

Wherefore the princes were wroth with emiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

Da Jeremia kom ned til cellen i fangehullet, ble han der lenge.

When emiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and emiah had remained there many days;

Så sendte kong Sidkia etter ham, tok ham ut og spurte ham i hemmelighet i sitt hus og sa: Er det noe budskap fra Herren? Jeremia svarte: Det er; for sa han, du skal bli overgitt til kongen av Babylon.

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And emiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

Mer sa Jeremia til kong Sidkia: Hva har jeg gjort mot deg, dine tjenere eller dette folket, siden dere har satt meg i fengsel?

Moreover emiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?

Hvor er nå profetene deres som profeterte til dere og sa: Kongen av Babylon skal ikke komme mot dere eller dette landet?

Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

Hør nå, jeg ber deg, min herre kongen: La min bønn bli hørt for deg, og ikke før meg tilbake til skriveren Jonatans hus, så jeg dør der.

Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

Kongen Sidkia befalte at Jeremia skulle bli plassert i fengselsgården, og at de daglig skulle gi ham et stykke brød fra bakerens gate, til alt brød i byen var oppbrukt. Så ble Jeremia værende i fengselsgården.

Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit emiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus emiah remained in the court of the prison.
