Det var en mann som var syk, ved navn Lasarus, fra Betania, byen til Maria og hennes søster Marta.

Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

(Det var den Maria som salvet Herren med salve og tørket hans føtter med sitt hår. Det var hennes bror Lasarus som var syk.)

(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

Derfor sendte søstrene bud til ham og sa: Herre, se, han som du elsker, er syk.

Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

Da Jesus hørte det, sa han: Denne sykdommen er ikke til døden, men til Guds ære, for at Guds sønn skal bli æret ved den.

When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

Jesus elsket Marta, og hennes søster, og Lasarus.

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

Da han nå hørte at han var syk, ble han likevel to dager til der han var.

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

Etter dette sa han til disiplene sine: La oss dra til Judea igjen.

Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

Disiplene sa til ham: Mester, jødene forsøkte nylig å steine deg, og du vil dra dit igjen?

His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

Jesus svarte: Har ikke dagen tolv timer? Hvis noen vandrer om dagen, snubler han ikke, for han ser lyset i denne verden.

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

Men hvis noen vandrer om natten, snubler han, fordi lyset ikke er i ham.

But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

Dette sa han, og etter å ha sagt dette, sa han til dem: Vår venn Lasarus sover, men jeg går for å vekke ham opp fra søvnen.

These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

Disiplene sa da til ham: Herre, hvis han sover, blir han bra.

Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

Men Jesus hadde talt om hans død, mens de trodde at han snakket om vanlig søvn.

Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

Da sa Jesus rett ut til dem: Lasarus er død.

Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

Og jeg er glad for deres skyld at jeg ikke var der, så dere kan tro. La oss imidlertid dra til ham.

And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

Da sa Tomas, som også kalles Didymus, til sine meddisipler: La oss også gå, så vi kan dø med ham.

Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

Da Jesus kom, fant han at Lasarus allerede hadde ligget i graven i fire dager.

Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

Nå lå Betania nær Jerusalem, omtrent femten stadier unna.

Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

Mange av jødene hadde kommet til Marta og Maria for å trøste dem i sorgen over deres bror.

And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

Da Marta hørte at Jesus kom, gikk hun ut for å møte ham, men Maria ble sittende hjemme.

Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

Da sa Marta til Jesus: Herre, hvis du hadde vært her, ville min bror ikke ha dødd.

Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Men nå vet jeg at Gud vil gi deg alt hva du ber ham om.

But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

Jesus sa til henne: Din bror skal oppstå.

Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

Marta svarte: Jeg vet at han skal oppstå i oppstandelsen på den ytterste dag.

Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Jesus sa til henne: Jeg er oppstandelsen og livet. Den som tror på meg, skal leve om han enn dør.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

Og hver den som lever og tror på meg, skal aldri i evighet dø. Tror du dette?

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Hun sa til ham: Ja, Herre. Jeg tror at du er Messias, Guds Sønn, han som skal komme til verden.

She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

Da hun hadde sagt dette, gikk hun bort og kalte hemmelig på Maria, sin søster, og sa: Mesteren er her og kaller på deg.

And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

Da hun hørte det, reiste hun seg raskt og gikk til ham.

As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

Jesus var ennå ikke kommet inn i byen, men var på det stedet hvor Marta hadde møtt ham.

Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

Da jødene som var hos henne i huset og trøstet henne, så at Maria reiste seg opp i all hast og gikk ut, fulgte de etter henne. De trodde hun skulle til graven for å gråte der.

The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

Da Maria kom dit hvor Jesus var og så ham, falt hun ned for hans føtter og sa til ham: Herre, hvis du hadde vært her, ville min bror ikke ha dødd.

Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Da Jesus så henne gråte, og jødene som var med henne også gråt, ble han dypt rørt i sin ånd og urolig,

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

og han sa: Hvor har dere lagt ham? De svarte: Herre, kom og se.

And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

Jesus gråt.

Jesus wept.

Da sa jødene: Se hvor han elsket ham!

Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

Men noen av dem sa: Kunne ikke han som åpnet den blindes øyne, også ha gjort det slik at denne mannen ikke måtte dø?

And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

Jesus ble igjen dypt rørt i sitt indre da han kom til graven. Det var en hule, og en stein lå foran åpningen.

Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Jesus sa: Ta bort stenen. Marta, den dødes søster, sa til ham: Herre, han lukter nå, for han har vært død i fire dager.

Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

Jesus sa til henne: Sa jeg ikke til deg at hvis du tror, skal du se Guds herlighet?

Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

Da tok de bort stenen fra graven. Jesus løftet sine øyne opp og sa: Far, jeg takker deg for at du har hørt meg.

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

Jeg vet at du alltid hører meg, men jeg sa det for folket som står rundt, for at de skal tro at du har sendt meg.

And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

Da han hadde sagt dette, ropte han med høy røst: Lasarus, kom ut!

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

Da kom den døde ut, bundet på hender og føtter med linklær, og ansiktet var dekket med et tørkle. Jesus sa til dem: Løs ham og la ham gå.

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Mange av jødene som hadde kommet til Maria og sett hva Jesus hadde gjort, trodde derfor på ham.

Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

Men noen av dem gikk til fariseerne og fortalte dem hva Jesus hadde gjort.

But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

Da samlet overprestene og fariseerne et rådsmøte og sa: Hva skal vi gjøre? For denne mannen gjør mange tegn.

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

Hvis vi lar ham fortsette slik, vil alle tro på ham, og da vil romerne komme og ta både vårt sted og vår nasjon.

If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

En av dem, Kaifas, som var yppersteprest det året, sa til dem: Dere forstår ingenting.

And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

Dere tar ikke i betraktning at det er bedre for oss at en mann dør for folket, enn at hele nasjonen går til grunne.

Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

Dette sa han ikke av seg selv, men som yppersteprest det året profeterte han at Jesus skulle dø for nasjonen.

And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

Og ikke bare for nasjonen, men for å samle til ett de Guds barn som er spredt omkring.

And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

Fra den dagen av planla de hvordan de kunne drepe ham.

Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

Jesus vandret derfor ikke mer omkring åpenlyst blant jødene, men dro derfra til et område nær ødemarken, til en by som kalles Efraim, og der ble han værende med disiplene sine.

Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

Jødenes påske var nær, og mange dro opp til Jerusalem fra landet før påsken for å rense seg.

And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

De lette etter Jesus og sa til hverandre mens de sto i templet: Hva tror dere? Vil han ikke komme til høytiden?

Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

Overprestene og fariseerne hadde nå gitt en befaling om at hvis noen visste hvor han var, skulle de gi melding så de kunne ta ham.

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
