Da tok Pilatus Jesus og lot ham bli pisket.

Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

Soldatene flettet en krone av torner og satte den på hodet hans, og de kledde ham i en purpurkappe.

And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

Og de sa: «Hill, jødenes konge!» og slo ham med hendene sine.

And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

Pilatus gikk da ut igjen og sa til dem: «Se, jeg fører ham ut til dere så dere kan vite at jeg ikke finner noen skyld hos ham.»

Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

Da kom Jesus ut, iført tornekronen og purpurkappen. Og Pilatus sa til dem: «Se mennesket!»

Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

Da yppersteprestene og tjenerne så ham, ropte de: «Korsfest ham, korsfest ham!» Pilatus sa til dem: «Ta ham dere og korsfest ham, for jeg finner ingen skyld hos ham.»

When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

Jødene svarte ham: «Vi har en lov, og ifølge vår lov må han dø fordi han har gjort seg selv til Guds Sønn.»

The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

Da Pilatus hørte dette, ble han enda mer redd.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

Han gikk inn igjen i rettssalen og sa til Jesus: «Hvor er du fra?» Men Jesus ga ham ikke noe svar.

And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

Pilatus sa da til ham: «Svarer du meg ikke? Vet du ikke at jeg har makt til å korsfeste deg og makt til å frigi deg?»

Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

Jesus svarte: «Du ville ikke ha noen makt over meg hvis det ikke var gitt deg ovenfra. Derfor har han som ga meg over til deg, større skyld.»

Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

Fra da av forsøkte Pilatus å frigi ham, men jødene ropte: «Hvis du lar denne mannen gå, er du ikke keiserens venn. Den som gjør seg selv til konge, taler mot keiseren.»

And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

Da Pilatus hørte dette, førte han Jesus ut og satte seg på dommersetet på et sted som heter «Stenbelagt»; på hebraisk «Gabbata».

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

Det var forberedelsesdagen til påsken, omkring den sjette time. Han sa til jødene: «Se deres konge!»

And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

De ropte da: «Bort med ham, bort med ham, korsfest ham!» Pilatus sa til dem: «Skal jeg korsfeste deres konge?» Yppersteprestene svarte: «Vi har ingen konge, bare keiseren.»

But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

Da overga han Jesus til dem for å bli korsfestet. Og de tok Jesus og førte ham bort.

Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

Han bar sitt kors og gikk ut til det stedet som kalles «Hodeskalleplassen», på hebraisk «Golgata».

And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

Der korsfestet de ham, og sammen med ham to andre, en på hver side, og Jesus i midten.

Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

Pilatus skrev også en innskrift og satte den på korset. Den lød: «JESUS FRA NASARET, JØDENES KONGE.»

And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Mange av jødene leste denne innskriften, for stedet hvor Jesus ble korsfestet, var nær byen, og den var skrevet på hebraisk, gresk og latin.

This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

Da sa jødenes yppersteprester til Pilatus: «Skriv ikke: Jødenes konge, men at han sa: Jeg er jødenes konge.»

Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

Pilatus svarte: «Det jeg har skrevet, har jeg skrevet.»

Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

Da soldatene hadde korsfestet Jesus, tok de klærne hans og delte dem i fire deler, en del til hver soldat, og også kappen. Kappen var uten søm, vevd i ett stykke fra toppen.

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

De sa derfor til hverandre: «La oss ikke rive den i stykker, men kaste lodd om hvem som skal ha den.» Dette for at skriften skulle bli oppfylt som sier: «De delte mine klær mellom seg, og om min kappe kastet de lodd.» Dette gjorde soldatene.

They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

Ved Jesu kors sto hans mor, og morens søster, Maria som var gift med Klopas, og Maria Magdalena.

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

Da Jesus så sin mor, og den disiplen han elsket stå der, sa han til sin mor: «Kvinne, se din sønn!»

When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

Så sa han til disiplen: «Se din mor!» Og fra den stund tok denne disiplen henne til sitt eget hjem.

Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

Etter dette, da Jesus visste at alt var fullført, for at skriften skulle bli oppfylt, sa han: «Jeg tørster.»

After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

Det sto der en krukke full av eddik. De fylte en svamp med eddik, satte den på en isopstilk, og holdt den opp til munnen hans.

Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

Da Jesus hadde fått eddiken, sa han: «Det er fullbrakt.» Og han bøyde hodet og oppga ånden.

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Jødene, fordi det var forberedelsesdagen, og for at kroppene ikke skulle forbli på korset på sabbaten (for den sabbaten var en stor dag), ba Pilatus om at deres bein måtte bli brutt og at de skulle fjernes.

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

Soldatene kom da og brøt beina på den første og på den andre som var korsfestet med ham.

Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

Men da de kom til Jesus og så at han allerede var død, brøt de ikke hans bein.

But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

Men en av soldatene stakk et spyd i siden hans, og straks kom det ut blod og vann.

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

Han som så det, har vitnet om det, og hans vitnesbyrd er sant, og han vet at han taler sant, for at dere også skal tro.

And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

Dette skjedde for at Skriften skulle bli oppfylt: «Ingen av hans bein skal brytes.»

For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

Og igjen sier en annen skrift: «De skal se på ham de har gjennomboret.»

And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

Etter dette ba Josef fra Arimatea, som var en disippel av Jesus i hemmelighet av frykt for jødene, Pilatus om å få ta Jesu kropp. Pilatus ga ham lov, så han kom og tok Jesu kropp.

And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

Også Nikodemus, han som først kom til Jesus om natten, kom og hadde med seg en blanding av myrra og aloë, omkring hundre pund.

And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

De tok da Jesu kropp og svøpte den i likklær sammen med krydderne, slik jødene har som skikk å begrave.

Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

På stedet hvor han ble korsfestet var det en hage, og i hagen en ny grav, hvor ingen ennå var lagt.

Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

Der la de Jesus på grunn av jødenes forberedelsesdag, for graven var nær ved.

There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
