Herrens ord kom til Jonas, sønn av Amittai, og sa:

Now the word of the LORD came unto ah the son of Amittai, saying,

Reis til Nineve, den store byen, og rop ut mot den, for deres ondskap har kommet opp for mitt ansikt.

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

Men Jonas gjorde seg klar for å flykte til Tarsis bort fra Herrens nærhet, og dro ned til Jaffa. Der fant han et skip som skulle til Tarsis, betalte billetten og gikk ombord for å reise med dem til Tarsis, vekk fra Herrens nærhet.

But ah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

Da sendte Herren en sterk vind over havet, og det ble en mektig storm på havet, slik at skipet var nær ved å bryte sammen.

But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

Sjøfolkene ble redde og ropte hver på sin gud, og de kastet lasten fra skipet ut i havet for å lette det. Men Jonas hadde gått ned i skipet og lå nå i dyp søvn.

Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But ah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

Skipsføreren kom ned til ham og ropte: «Hva er det med deg, sovende mann? Stå opp, kall på din Gud! Kanskje Gud vil tenke på oss så vi ikke går under.»

So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

Så sa de til hverandre: «Kom, la oss kaste lodd for å finne ut hvem som er årsaken til denne ulykken.» De kastet lodd, og loddet falt på Jonas.

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon ah.

Da spurte de ham: «Fortell oss hvorfor denne ulykken er over oss! Hva er yrket ditt, og hvor kommer du fra? Hvilket land og folk tilhører du?»

Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

Han svarte dem: «Jeg er en hebreer, og jeg frykter Herren, himmelens Gud, som har skapt havet og det tørre land.»

And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.

Da ble mennene svært redde og spurte ham: «Hvorfor har du gjort dette?» For de visste at han flyktet fra Herrens nærhet, fordi han hadde sagt det til dem.

Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

Så spurte de ham: «Hva skal vi gjøre med deg, så havet kan bli stille? For havet stormet stadig sterkere.»

Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

Han svarte: «Ta meg og kast meg i havet, så vil det bli stille for dere. For jeg vet at det er på grunn av meg denne store stormen er over dere.»

And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

Likevel rodde mennene hardt for å få skipet til land, men de klarte det ikke, for havet stormet stadig sterkere mot dem.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

Da ropte de til Herren og sa: «Vi ber deg, Herre, la oss ikke gå under for denne mannens liv, og krev ikke uskyldig blod av oss, for du, Herre, har handlet som du ville.»

Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.

Så tok de Jonas og kastet ham i havet, og havet sluttet å rase.

So they took up ah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

Da ble mennene fylt med stor frykt for Herren, de ofret et slaktoffer til Herren og avla løfter.

Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.

Herren hadde nå sørget for en stor fisk til å sluke Jonas. Jonas var i fiskens buk i tre dager og tre netter.

Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up ah. And ah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
