And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan, that the LORD spake unto hua, saying,

«Velg ut tolv menn fra folket, én mann fra hver stamme,

Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,

og be dem ta tolv steiner fra midten av Jordan, fra stedet hvor prestene stod fast, og bære dem med seg og plassere dem der hvor dere skal overnatte i natt.”

And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests' feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night.

Så kalte Josva de tolv mennene han hadde utpekt blant Israels barn, én mann fra hver stamme.

Then hua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:

Og Josva sa til dem: «Gå foran Herrens ark, deres Gud, inn i midten av Jordan, og løft hver av dere en stein på skulderen, i samsvar med antallet av Israels barns stammer,

And hua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:

så dette kan være et tegn blant dere. Når deres barn i fremtiden spør sine fedre og sier: 'Hva betyr disse steinene?'

That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?

da skal dere svare dem: 'Vannet i Jordan ble stanset foran Herrens paktsark; da den gikk over Jordan, ble vannet stanset, og disse steinene skal være et minne for Israels barn til evig tid.'»

Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

Israels barn gjorde slik Josva hadde befalt, og de tok opp tolv steiner fra midten av Jordan, slik Herren hadde talt til Josva, i henhold til antallet av Israels barns stammer, og de bar dem med seg til stedet hvor de skulle overnatte, og la dem der.

And the children of Israel did so as hua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto hua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.

Josva satte også opp tolv steiner midt i Jordan, på stedet hvor føttene til prestene som bar Herrens paktsark stod, og de er der den dag i dag.

And hua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.

For prestene som bar arken stod midt i Jordan til alt var fullført som Herren hadde befalt Josva å si til folket, i samsvar med alt Moses hadde befalt Josva, og folket hastet og gikk over.

For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished that the LORD commanded hua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded hua: and the people hasted and passed over.

Da det skjedde, etter at hele folket hadde gått over, gikk også Herrens ark over, og prestene, foran folket.

And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.

Og Rubens barn, Gads barn, og halvdelen av Manasse stamme gikk over væpnet foran Israels barn, slik Moses hadde talt til dem:

And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:

Omtrent førti tusen som var forberedt til krig, gikk over foran Herren til strid, til slettene ved Jeriko.

About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.

Den dagen opphøyde Herren Josva i hele Israels øyne, og de fryktet ham slik de hadde fryktet Moses, alle hans livsdager.

On that day the LORD magnified hua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

Og Herren talte til Josva og sa:

And the LORD spake unto hua, saying,

«Befal prestene som bærer vitnesbyrdets ark, at de skal komme opp av Jordan.»

Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan.

Derfor befalte Josva prestene og sa: «Kom opp av Jordan.»

hua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of Jordan.

Og det skjedde, da prestene som bar Herrens paktsark kom opp av midten av Jordan, og sålen på prestene føtter ble løftet opp på tørt land, da vendte vannet i Jordan tilbake til sitt sted og fløt over alle breddene som før.

And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.

Folket kom opp fra Jordan den tiende dagen i den første måneden og slo leir i Gilgal, på østsiden av Jeriko.

And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.

Og de tolv steinene de hadde tatt opp fra Jordan, reiste Josva i Gilgal.

And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did hua pitch in Gilgal.

Og han talte til Israels barn og sa: «Når deres barn i fremtiden spør deres fedre og sier: 'Hva betyr disse steinene?'

And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?

så skal dere la deres barn få vite, og si: 'Israel gikk over denne Jordan på tørt land.'

Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.

For Herren deres Gud tørket opp vannet i Jordan foran dere, inntil dere var kommet over, slik Herren deres Gud gjorde med Rødehavet, som han tørket opp foran oss, inntil vi var kommet over;

For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:

for at alle jordens folk skal kjenne Herrens hånd, at den er mektig, slik at dere alltid vil frykte Herren deres Gud.'»

That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.
