Og Herren sa til Joshua: Frykt ikke og bli ikke motløs. Ta med deg alle krigerne og dra opp til Ai. Se, jeg har gitt kongen av Ai, folket, byen og landet i din hånd.

And the LORD said unto hua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

Og du skal gjøre med Ai og kongen der som du gjorde med Jeriko og kongen der. Men byttet og buskapen der kan dere ta som rov for dere selv. Legg et bakhold mot byen bak den.

And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

Joshua sto opp med alle krigerne for å dra mot Ai, og han valgte ut tretti tusen sterke krigere og sendte dem av sted om natten.

So hua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and hua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

Og han befalte dem: Se, dere skal ligge i bakhold mot byen, selv bak byen. Gå ikke langt unna, men vær klare.

And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

Jeg og alt folket som er med meg, vil nærme oss byen. Når de kommer ut mot oss som første gang, vil vi flykte for dem.

And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,

For de vil komme ut etter oss til vi har lurt dem bort fra byen. For de vil si: De flykter for oss som første gang. Derfor vil vi flykte for dem.

(For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.

Da skal dere reise dere opp fra bakholdet og innta byen, for Herren deres Gud vil gi den i deres hånd.

Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.

Og når dere har tatt byen, skal dere sette den i brann, slik som Herren har befalt. Se, jeg har gitt dere dette pålegg.

And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.

Dermed sendte Joshua dem av sted, og de gikk for å ligge i bakhold mellom Betel og Ai, vest for Ai. Men Joshua tilbrakte natten blant folket.

hua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but hua lodged that night among the people.

Joshua sto tidlig opp om morgenen, samlet folket og dro opp, han og Israels eldste foran folket til Ai.

And hua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

Og alt folket av krigere som var med ham, dro opp og nærmet seg, og kom foran byen og slo leir nord for Ai. Det var en dal mellom dem og Ai.

And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.

Og han tok omtrent fem tusen mann og satte dem i bakhold mellom Betel og Ai, vest for byen.

And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of the city.

Så plasserte de folk, både hæren som var nord for byen, og de i bakholdet vest for byen. Joshua gikk den natten inn i dalens midt.

And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, hua went that night into the midst of the valley.

Da kongen av Ai så dette, skyndte han seg og sto opp tidlig, og mennene fra byen dro ut mot Israel i strid, i det fastsatte tidsrom, foran slettelandet. Han visste imidlertid ikke at det var et bakhold mot ham bak byen.

And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

Joshua og hele Israel lot som om de ble slått foran dem, og flyktet mot ørkenen.

And hua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

Alle mennene i Ai ble kalt sammen for å forfølge dem, og de forfulgte Joshua og ble dratt bort fra byen.

And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after hua, and were drawn away from the city.

Det var ingen igjen i Ai eller Betel som ikke dro ut etter Israel. De lot byen stå åpen og forfulgte Israel.

And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

Og Herren sa til Joshua: Rekk ut spydet du har i hånden mot Ai, for jeg vil gi den i din hånd. Og Joshua rakte ut spydet han hadde i hånden mot byen.

And the LORD said unto hua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And hua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.

Da reiste bakholdet seg raskt fra sitt sted, og de løp straks han rakte ut hånden, og de tok byen og satte den i brann.

And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.

Da mennene i Ai snudde seg og så, se, røyken fra byen steg opp mot himmelen, og de hadde ikke mulighet til å flykte hverken hit eller dit. Og folket som flyktet til ørkenen, vendte seg mot forfølgerne.

And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

Og da Joshua og hele Israel så at bakholdet hadde tatt byen, og at røyken fra byen steg opp, vendte de tilbake og drepte mennene i Ai.

And when hua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

De andre kom ut av byen mot dem, slik at de var omgitt av Israel, noen på denne siden og noen på den. Og de slo dem, så det ikke var noen igjen som unnslapp.

And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

Og kongen av Ai tok de levende og førte ham til Joshua.

And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to hua.

Og da Israel hadde fullført å slå alle innbyggerne i Ai på marken, i ørkenen der de jaget dem, og de alle falt for sverdet til de var fortært, vendte alle israelittene tilbake til Ai og slo det med sverdet.

And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

Og alle som falt den dag, både menn og kvinner, var tolv tusen, alle mennene i Ai.

And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

For Joshua trakk ikke hånden tilbake som han hadde rakt ut spydet med, før han hadde fullstendig ødelagt alle innbyggerne i Ai.

For hua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

Bare buskapen og byttet fra byen tok Israel som bytte til seg selv, etter Herrens ord som han hadde befalt Joshua.

Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded hua.

Og Joshua brente Ai og gjorde den til en haug for alltid, en ødemark inntil denne dag.

And hua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.

Og kongen av Ai hengte han på et tre til kvelden: etter solnedgang befalte Joshua at de skulle ta hans kropp ned fra treet og kaste den ved inngangen til byporten, og reise en stor steinhaug over den, som er der til denne dag.

And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, hua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.

Deretter bygde Joshua et alter til Herren Israels Gud på fjellet Ebal.

Then hua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,

Som Moses, Herrens tjener, hadde befalt israelsmennene, som det står skrevet i lovboken til Moses, et alter av hele steiner, som ingen hadde løftet noen jern over. Og de ofret brennoffer til Herren, og ofret fredsoffer.

As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.

Og han skrev der på steinene en kopi av loven til Moses, som han skrev i nærvær av Israels barn.

And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

Og hele Israel, med deres eldste, embetsmenn og dommere, sto på hver sin side av paktens ark, foran Levittenes prester som bar Herrens paktens ark, både vanlige folk og de innfødte blant dem; halvparten av dem foran fjellet Gerisim, og halvparten foran fjellet Ebal, slik Moses, Herrens tjener, hadde befalt, for å velsigne Israels folk.

And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.

Deretter leste han alle ordene i loven, velsignelsene og forbannelsene, slik det står skrevet i lovboken.

And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

Det var ikke et ord av alt det Moses hadde befalt, som Joshua ikke leste opp foran hele Israels forsamling, med kvinnene, barna og de fremmede som bodde blant dem.

There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which hua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
