Nå var Jefta, gileaditten, en mektig kriger, men han var sønn av en skjøge. Gilead var far til Jefta.

Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

Gileads kone fødte ham sønner, og da hennes sønner vokste opp, jaget de Jefta bort og sa til ham: «Du skal ikke arve i vår fars hus, for du er sønn av en fremmed kvinne.»

And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and his wife's sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.

Da flyktet Jefta fra sine brødre og bodde i landet Tob. Røvere samlet seg der om Jefta og dro ut med ham.

Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.

Etter en tid hendte det at ammonittene gjorde krig mot Israel.

And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

Da ammonittene førte krig mot Israel, gikk de eldste i Gilead for å hente Jefta fra landet Tob.

And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:

De sa til Jefta: «Kom og bli vår leder, så vi kan kjempe mot ammonittene.»

And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

Men Jefta sa til de eldste i Gilead: «Var det ikke dere som hatet meg og jaget meg bort fra min fars hus? Hvorfor kommer dere til meg nå når dere er i nød?»

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

De eldste i Gilead svarte Jefta: «Nettopp derfor kommer vi nå til deg, slik at du kan dra med oss og kjempe mot ammonittene. Så skal du være vår leder over alle innbyggerne i Gilead.»

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Da sa Jefta til de eldste i Gilead: «Hvis dere bringer meg tilbake for å kjempe mot ammonittene, og Herren overgir dem til meg, blir jeg da lederen deres?»

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

De eldste i Gilead sa til Jefta: «Herren skal være vitne mellom oss, om vi ikke gjør som du sier.»

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.

Så dro Jefta med de eldste i Gilead, og folket gjorde ham til deres leder og kommandant. Jefta gjentok alle sine ord for Herren i Mispa.

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.

Jefta sendte budbringere til kongen av Ammon og sa: «Hva har du med meg å gjøre, siden du kommer mot meg for å kjempe i mitt land?»

And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?

Kongen av Ammon svarte Jeftas budbringere: «Fordi Israel tok mitt land da de kom opp fra Egypt, fra Arnon til Jabok og til Jordan. Gi oss tilbake disse områdene i fred nå.»

And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.

Jefta sendte igjen budbringere til kongen av Ammon

And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:

og sa: «Så sier Jefta: Israel tok ikke land fra Moab eller ammonittene.

And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:

Men da Israel kom opp fra Egypt, vandret de gjennom ørkenen til Rødehavet og kom til Kadesh.

But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;

Israel sendte budbringere til kongen av Edom og ba om å få passere gjennom hans land, men kongen av Edom ville ikke høre. De sendte også til kongen av Moab, men han ville heller ikke tillate det, så Israel ble værende i Kadesh.

Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

Deretter vandret de gjennom ørkenen, gikk rundt Edoms og Moabs land, og kom til østsiden av Moabs land. De slo leir på den andre siden av Arnon, men gikk ikke inn i Moabs land, for Arnon var Moabs grense.

Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.

Israel sendte så budbringere til Sihon, amorittenes konge, kongen av Hesjbon, og ba om å få passere gjennom hans land til deres egen plass.

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

Men Sihon stolte ikke på at Israel ville passere gjennom hans land. Han samlet alt folket sitt, slo leir i Jahas og kjempet mot Israel.

But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

Herren, Israels Gud, overgav Sihon og hele hans folk i Israels hånd, og de slo dem. Så Israel tok hele landets amoritter, beboerne i det landet.

And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

De tok alt amorittenes land fra Arnon til Jabok og fra ørkenen til Jordan.

And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.

Så nå har Herren, Israels Gud, drevet ut amorittene for sitt folk Israel, og skulle du ta det i besittelse?

So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?

Bør ikke du ta i besittelse det som din gud Kemosh har gitt deg? Så alt Herren vår Gud driver ut foran oss, det vil vi ta i besittelse.

Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

Er du noe bedre enn Balak, sønn av Sippor, Moabs konge? Stred han noen gang mot Israel eller kjempet mot dem?

And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,

Mens Israel bodde i Hesjbon og dens byer, i Aroer og dens byer, og i alle byene langs Arnonkanten i tre hundre år, hvorfor gjenerobret dere dem ikke i løpet av den tiden?

While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?

Derfor har jeg ikke syndet mot deg, men du gjør meg urett ved å føre krig mot meg. Må Herren, dommeren, dømme mellom Israels barn og Ammon på denne dag.

Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

Men kongen av Ammon lyttet ikke til ordene Jefta sendte ham.

Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

Da kom Herrens Ånd over Jefta. Han dro over Gilead og Manasse, videre til Mispa i Gilead, og fra Mispa i Gilead dro han til ammonittene.

Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

Jefta avla et løfte til Herren og sa: «Hvis du uten tvil gir ammonittene i mine hender,

And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,

da skal det som enn kommer ut av dørene i mitt hus for å møte meg når jeg vender tilbake i fred fra ammonittene, tilhøre Herren, og jeg vil ofre det som et brennoffer.»

Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

Så dro Jefta til ammonittene for å kjempe mot dem, og Herren overgav dem i hans hånd.

So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.

Han slo dem fra Aroer til du kommer til Minnit, tjue byer og til Abels vingårdslette, og ammonittene ble underlagt Israels barn.

And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

Da Jefta kom tilbake til sitt hus i Mispa, se, hans datter kom ut for å møte ham med tamburiner og dans. Hun var hans eneste barn; han hadde verken sønn eller datter utenom henne.

And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

Da han så henne, rev han sine klær og sa: «Akk, min datter! Du har brakt meg i stor sorg, og du er blant dem som plager meg, for jeg har åpnet min munn til Herren, og jeg kan ikke ta det tilbake.»

And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

Hun sa til ham: «Min far, hvis du har åpnet din munn til Herren, gjør da med meg som du har sagt, siden Herren har gitt deg hevn over dine fiender, ammonittene.»

And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.

Hun sa til sin far: «La dette bli gjort for meg: la meg være alene i to måneder, så jeg kan gå opp og ned i fjellene og sørge over min jomfrudom, jeg og mine venner.»

And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.

Han sa: «Gå!» Og han sendte henne bort for to måneder. Hun dro med sine venninner og sørget over sin jomfrudom i fjellene.

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

Etter to måneder kom hun tilbake til sin far, og han gjorde med henne i henhold til det løftet han hadde gitt. Hun hadde ikke vært med noen mann. Og det ble en skikk i Israel,

And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,

at Israels døtre hvert år gikk for å sørge over Jefta, gileadittens datter, i fire dager hvert år.

That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
