Og israelittene gjorde igjen det som var ondt i Herrens øyne; og Herren overga dem i filisternes hånd i førti år.

And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

Det var en mann fra Zorah, av Dan-familien, som het Manoah; og hans kone var ufruktbar og hadde ingen barn.

And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not.

Herrens engel viste seg for kvinnen og sa til henne: Se nå, du er ufruktbar og har ingen barn, men du skal bli gravid og føde en sønn.

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.

Så vær derfor forsiktig, jeg ber deg, og ikke drikk vin eller sterk drikk, og spis ikke noe urent.

Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing:

For se, du skal bli gravid og føde en sønn, og det skal ikke komme barberkniv på hans hode; for barnet skal være en nasireer for Gud fra mors liv; og han skal begynne å befri Israel fra filisternes hånd.

For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no rasor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

Kvinnen kom da og fortalte dette til mannen sin, og sa: En Guds mann kom til meg, og hans utseende var som en Guds engel, veldig fryktinngytende; men jeg spurte ham ikke hvor han kom fra, og han fortalte meg ikke sitt navn.

Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:

Men han sa til meg: Se, du skal bli gravid og føde en sønn; og nå skal du ikke drikke vin eller sterk drikk, og ikke spise noe urent; for barnet skal være en nasireer for Gud fra mors liv til den dagen han dør.

But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.

Da ba Manoah til Herren og sa: Å, min Herre, la Guds mann som du har sendt komme igjen til oss og lære oss hva vi skal gjøre med det barnet som skal fødes.

Then Manoah intreated the LORD, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God which thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.

Og Gud hørte på Manoahs bønn; og Guds engel kom igjen til kvinnen mens hun satt ute på marken, men Manoah, hennes mann, var ikke med henne.

And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her.

Da skyndte kvinnen seg, løp og fortalte det til mannen sin, og sa til ham: Se, mannen har vist seg for meg, han som kom til meg den andre dagen.

And the woman made haste, and ran, and shewed her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day.

Manoah reiste seg og fulgte etter sin kone og kom til mannen, og sa til ham: Er du mannen som talte med kvinnen? Og han sa: Det er jeg.

And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am.

Da sa Manoah: Måttet dine ord bli oppfylt. Hvordan skal vi oppdra barnet, og hva skal vi gjøre med ham?

And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?

Herrens engel sa til Manoah: Alt jeg har sagt til kvinnen, la henne passe på å overholde.

And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware.

Hun skal ikke spise noe fra vintreet, ei heller drikke vin eller sterk drikk, eller spise noe urent; alt som jeg har befalt henne, skal hun holde.

She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.

Manoah sa til Herrens engel: Jeg ber deg, la oss få holde deg tilbake til vi har gjort i stand en kje til deg.

And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, I pray thee, let us detain thee, until we shall have made ready a kid for thee.

Herrens engel svarte Manoah: Selv om du holder meg tilbake, vil jeg ikke spise ditt brød; men hvis du vil ofre et brennoffer, må du ofre det til Herren. Manoah visste nemlig ikke at det var Herrens engel.

And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD. For Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD.

Da spurte Manoah Herrens engel: Hva er ditt navn, så vi kan gi deg ære når dine ord går i oppfyllelse?

And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour?

Herrens engel svarte ham: Hvorfor spør du om mitt navn, siden det er underfullt?

And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?

Så tok Manoah en kje med et græsoffer og ofret det på en stein til Herren; og engelen gjorde noe underfullt mens Manoah og hans kone så på.

So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wondrously; and Manoah and his wife looked on.

For da flammen gikk opp mot himmelen fra alteret, steg Herrens engel opp i flammen. Manoah og hans kone så det og falt på sine ansikter til jorden.

For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.

Herrens engel viste seg ikke mer for Manoah og hans kone. Da innså Manoah at det var Herrens engel.

But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD.

Manoah sa til sin kone: Vi kommer sikkert til å dø, for vi har sett Gud.

And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.

Men hans kone sa til ham: Hadde Herren ønsket å drepe oss, ville han ikke ha mottatt et brennoffer og græsoffer av våre hender, og han ville heller ikke ha vist oss alt dette, eller sagt oss slike ting nå.

But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.

Kvinnen fødte en sønn og ga ham navnet Samson; og barnet vokste, og Herren velsignet ham.

And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him.

Herrens ånd begynte å bevege ham fra tid til annen i Dans leir mellom Zorah og Eshtaol.

And the Spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.
