Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.

Da fikk folkene i Gaza beskjed om at Samson var kommet hit. De omringet han og lå i bakhold for ham hele natten ved byporten. De var stille hele natten og sa: Når dagen gryr, skal vi drepe ham.

And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.

Samson ble liggende til midnatt, men står opp da, tok tak i portens dører med de to søylene, og bar dem bort på sine skuldre opp til toppen av høyden foran Hebron.

And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron.

Senere ble han forelsket i en kvinne i Sorekdalen som hette Dalila.

And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.

Fyrstene blant filisterne kom til henne og sa: Lokke ham til å fortelle hvor hans store styrke ligger, og hvordan vi kan overvinne ham, så vi kan binde ham for å tukte ham. Da vil vi gi deg ellevehundre sølvstykker hver.

And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.

Dalila sa til Samson: Vær så snill og fortell meg hvor din store styrke ligger, og hvordan du kan bindes for å bli gjort maktesløs.

And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.

Samson svarte henne: Om de binder meg med sju friske buestrenger som aldri har vært tørket, da skal jeg bli svak og som en vanlig mann.

And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.

Da brakte fyrstene blant filisterne henne sju friske buestrenger som ikke hadde vært tørket, og hun bandt ham med dem.

Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.

Mens mennene lå i bakhold i kammeret hos henne, sa hun: Samson, filisterne er over deg! Men han brøt strengene som en tråd av tøy brytes når den treffer ilden. Slik ble hemmeligheten om hans styrke ikke kjent.

Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.

Dalila sa til Samson: Se, du har narret meg og løyet til meg. Fortell meg nå hvor du kan bindes.

And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.

Han sa til henne: Om de binder meg fast med nye tau som aldri har vært brukt, da skal jeg bli svak og som en vanlig mann.

And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.

Så tok Dalila nye tau og bandt ham, og sa til ham: Samson, filisterne er over deg! Mens mennene lå i bakhold i kammeret, brøt han tauene fra armene sine som en tråd.

Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he brake them from off his arms like a thread.

Dalila sa til Samson: Hittil har du bare narret meg og løyet til meg. Fortell meg hvordan du kan bindes. Han svarte: Hvis du vever de sju hårlokkene mine inn i veven...

And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.

Hun festet hårlokkene med en pinne og ropte: Samson, filisterne er over deg! Da våknet han opp og dro av vevstolen og veven.

And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.

Hun sa til ham: Hvordan kan du si at du elsker meg når ditt hjerte ikke er hos meg? Tre ganger har du narret meg og ikke fortalt meg hvor din store styrke ligger.

And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.

Da hun presset ham dag etter dag med sine ord og plaget ham, var hans sjel så plaget at han ønsket seg død.

And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;

Så fortalte han hele sin hemmelighet og sa til henne: Det har aldri kommet barberkniv på mitt hode, for jeg har vært en nasireer for Gud fra min mors liv. Om jeg blir barbert, vil min styrke forlate meg, og jeg vil bli svak og som alle andre menn.

That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a rasor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

Da Dalila så at han hadde fortalt henne hele sin hemmelighet, sendte hun bud til fyrstelene blant filisterne og sa: Kom opp denne gangen, for han har fortalt meg hele sin hemmelighet. Da kom fyrstene blant filisterne til henne og brakte pengene med seg.

And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.

Hun lot ham sovne på fanget sitt, kalte inn en mann som barberte av de sju lokkene på hodet hans. Dermed begynte hun å tukte ham, og hans styrke forlot ham.

And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.

Hun sa: Samson, filisterne er over deg! Han våknet fra søvnen og sa til seg selv: Jeg vil dra ut som tidligere ganger og riste meg fri. Men han visste ikke at Herren hadde forlatt ham.

And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.

Men filisterne grep ham, stakk ut hans øyne, førte ham ned til Gaza og bandt ham med bronse-lenker. Og han måtte male korn i fengselet.

But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.

Men håret på hodet hans begynte å vokse igjen etter at det var barbert.

Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.

Filisternes fyrster samlet seg for å ofre et stort offer til sin gud Dagon og for å feire. For de sa: Vår gud har gitt vår fiende Samson i våre hender.

Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.

Når folket så ham, priste de sin gud og sa: Vår gud har gitt vår fiende i våre hender, ham som ødela vårt land og drepte mange av oss.

And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us.

Mens de var oppstemt, sa de: Hent Samson, så han kan underholde oss. De hentet da Samson fra fengselet, og han underholdt dem. De stilte ham mellom søylene.

And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars.

Samson sa til gutten som holdt ham: La meg få kjenne søylene som huset hviler på, så jeg kan støtte meg til dem.

And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house standeth, that I may lean upon them.

Huset var fullt av menn og kvinner, og alle filisternes fyrster var der. På taket var det omtrent tre tusen menn og kvinner som så på mens Samson underholdt dem.

Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.

Samson ropte til Herren og sa: Herre Gud, kom i hu meg, ber jeg deg, styrk meg bare denne ene gangen, Gud, så jeg kan hevne meg på filisterne for mine to øyne.

And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.

Samson grep tak i de to midterste søylene som huset hvilte på, en med sin høyre hånd og den andre med sin venstre.

And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.

Samson sa: La meg dø med filisterne. Han bøyde seg med all sin styrke, og huset falt over fyrstene og hele folket deri. De som han drepte i sin død, var flere enn de han hadde drept i sitt liv.

And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.

Hans brødre og hele hans fars hus kom da ned og hentet ham. De bragte ham opp og begravde ham mellom Sora og Esjtaol i hans far Manoahs grav. Så dømte han Israel i tjue år.

Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.
