I de dager var det ingen konge i Israel, og på den tiden søkte Dans stamme et område å bo i, for inntil da hadde deres arv blant Israels stammer ikke blitt tildelt dem.

In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

Og Dans barn sendte fra sin familie fem menn, menn med mot, fra Sora og fra Esjtaol, for å utforske landet og se seg om; og de sa til dem: Gå og undersøk landet. Da de kom til Efraims fjell, til Mikas hus, overnattet de der.

And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.

Da de var ved Mikas hus, kjente de igjen stemmen til den unge levitten, og de gikk inn og spurte ham: Hvem har brakt deg hit? Og hva gjør du på dette stedet? Og hva har du her?

When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

Han svarte dem: Slik og slik behandler Mika meg, han har ansatt meg og jeg er hans prest.

And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.

Da sa de til ham: Vi ber deg, spør Gud om råd for oss, så vi kan vite om vår reise vil bli vellykket.

And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.

Presten sa til dem: Gå i fred; Herren er med dere på veien dere går.

And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.

Så dro de fem mennene videre og kom til La'isj og så folkene der, hvordan de levde trygt, på samme måte som sidonerne, rolige og trygge. Det var ingen myndighetsperson i landet som kunne gjøre dem skam, og de bodde langt fra sidonerne og hadde ingen handel med noen.

Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.

De kom tilbake til sine brødre i Sora og Esjtaol, og deres brødre spurte dem: Hva har dere å si?

And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?

De svarte: Reis opp, så vi kan gå mot dem, for vi har sett landet, og se, det er veldig godt. Er dere fortsatt? Vær ikke trege med å dra, gå inn og ta landet i besittelse.

And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.

Når dere drar, vil dere komme til et trygt folk og til et stort land, hvor ingenting mangler av det som finnes på jorden, for Gud har gitt det i deres hender.

When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.

Da dro 600 menn fra Dans familie, utstyrt med våpen til krig, fra Sora og Esjtaol.

And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.

De dro opp og slo leir i Kirjat-Jearim i Juda. Derfor ble stedet kalt Mahane-Dan til denne dag; se, det ligger bak Kirjat-Jearim.

And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim.

Derfra dro de videre til Efraims fjell og kom til Mikas hus.

And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

Da svarte de fem mennene som hadde dratt for å utforske landet La'isj, og sa til sine brødre: Vet dere at i disse husene finnes det en efod, og terafim, og et utskåret bilde, og et støpt bilde? Tenk nå på hva dere skal gjøre.

Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.

De vendte seg dit og kom til huset til den unge levitten, til Mikas hus, og hilste på ham.

And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.

De 600 mennene av Dans barn, bevæpnet til krig, stod ved portinngangen.

And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.

De fem mennene som hadde utforsket landet, gikk inn og tok det utskårne bildet, efoden, terafimene og det støpte bildet. Presten stod ved portinngangen med de 600 våpenføre mennene.

And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.

Da tok de inn i Mikas hus og hentet det utskårne bildet, efoden, terafimene og det støpte bildet. Presten spurte dem: Hva gjør dere?

And these went into Micah's house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?

De svarte ham: Vær stille, legg hånden over munnen din og bli med oss. Bli far og prest for oss. Er det bedre for deg å være prest for én mann, eller for en stamme og en familie i Israel?

And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

Prestens hjerte ble glad, og han tok efoden, terafimene og det utskårne bildet og dro med folkene.

And the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

Så snudde de og dro av sted, og de satte de små barna, buskapen og vognen foran seg.

So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.

Da de hadde kommet et godt stykke fra Mikas hus, samlet mennene som bodde nært Mikas hus seg, og forfulgte Dans barn.

And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

De ropte etter Dans barn, og da de snudde seg, sa de til Mika: Hva er det som plager deg, siden du kommer med en slik flokk?

And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?

Mika svarte: Dere har tatt bort gudene jeg har laget, og presten, og dratt av sted. Hva har jeg igjen? Og hva er det for et spørsmål: Hva plager deg?

And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?

Dans barn sa til ham: La ikke stemmen din bli hørt blant oss, ellers kan det hende at noen rasende menn angriper deg, og du mister livet, sammen med ditt hus.

And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.

Så fortsatte Dans barn på sin vei. Da Mika så at de var sterkere enn ham, vendte han tilbake til sitt hus.

And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

De tok det som Mika hadde laget, og presten han hadde, og kom til La'isj, til et folk som levde trygt og fredelig. De slo folket med sverdets egg og brente byen.

And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.

Det var ingen som kunne redde dem, siden de bodde langt fra Sidon og ikke hadde noe med andre å gjøre. Byen lå i dalen som ligger ved Bet-Rehob. Og de bygde opp byen igjen og bodde der.

And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.

De kalte byen Dan, etter navnet til sin stamfar Dan, som var født til Israel. Men opprinnelig het byen La'isj.

And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

Dans barn satte opp det utskårne bildet, og Jonatan, sønnen til Gersom, sønnen til Manasse, han og hans sønner var prester for Dans stamme til landets bortførelse.

And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.

De satte opp Mikas utskårne bilde hele tiden Guds hus var i Silo.

And they set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
