Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

De skulle prøve Israel for å se om de ville lyde Herrens bud, de bud han hadde gitt fedrene deres ved Moses’ hånd.

And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

Israels barn bodde blant kanaanittene, hetittene, amorittene, perisittene, hevittene og jebusittene.

And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

De tok deres døtre til koner og ga sine egne døtre til deres sønner, og de tilbad deres guder.

And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

Israels barn gjorde det som var ondt i Herrens øyne. De glemte Herren sin Gud og dyrket Ba’al-imene og Asjérastøttene.

And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

Da ble Herren brennende vred på Israel, og han overga dem til Kusjan-Risjatáim, kongen av Mesopotamia, og Israels barn tjente Kusjan-Risjatáim i åtte år.

Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.

Men da Israels barn ropte til Herren, reiste Herren en frelser opp for dem; det var Otniel, sønn av Kenas, som var yngre bror av Kaleb.

And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

Herrens ånd kom over ham, og han ble dommer i Israel. Han dro ut i krig, og Herren overga Kusjan-Risjatáim, kongen av Mesopotamia, i hans hender, og hans hånd fikk overtaket over Kusjan-Risjatáim.

And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.

Landet hadde ro i førti år. Så døde Otniel, sønn av Kenas.

And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

Israels barn gjorde igjen det som var ondt i Herrens øyne, og Herren lot Eglon, kongen av Moab, få makt over Israel fordi de hadde gjort det som var ondt i Herrens øyne.

And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

Han samlet ammonittene og amalekittene rundt seg, dro ut og slo Israel, og de tok palmebyen i eie.

And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

Så tjente Israels barn Eglon, kongen av Moab, i atten år.

So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

Men da Israels barn ropte til Herren, reiste Herren en frelser opp for dem, Ehud, sønn av Gera fra Benjamins stamme, en mann som var venstrehendt. Israels barn sendte en gave ved ham til Eglon, kongen av Moab.

But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

Ehud laget seg en dolk med to egg, en alen lang, og festet den under klærne sine ved høyre lår.

But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

Han overleverte gaven til Eglon, Moabs konge, som var en svært tykk mann.

And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

Da han hadde gitt fra seg gaven, sendte han bort folkene som hadde fulgt med.

And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

Men han vendte om fra steinbruddene ved Gilgal og sa: «Jeg har et hemmelig ærend til deg, konge.» Kongen svarte: «Vær stille!» Da gikk alle som sto hos ham ut.

But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

Ehud kom til ham mens han satt alene i det svale kammeret sitt. Ehud sa: «Jeg har et budskap fra Gud til deg.» Da reiste han seg opp fra setet.

And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

Ehud rakte ut venstre hånd, tok dolken fra høyre lår, og stakk den i magen hans.

And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

Knappen gikk også inn etter bladet, og fettet lukket seg om bladet, for han kunne ikke trekke dolken ut av magen. Og det kom ut avføring.

And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

Ehud gikk ut på verandaen, lukket dørene til det svale rommet bak seg, og låste dørene.

Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.

Da han hadde gått ut, kom tjenerne tilbake; da de så at dørene til det svale rommet var låst, sa de: «Han dekker føttene sine i det svale rommet.»

When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.

De ventet til de ble rådville, men da han ikke åpnet dørene til det svale rommet, tok de en nøkkel og låste opp. Der lå deres herre død på gulvet.

And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

Mens de nølte, rømte Ehud og passerte steinbruddene og kom seg unna til Seirat.

And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

Da han kom frem dit, blåste han i trompeten i Efraims fjellland, og Israels barn gikk ned sammen med ham fra fjellet, med ham i spissen.

And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

Han sa til dem: «Følg etter meg, for Herren har gitt moabittene, deres fiender, i deres hender.» De fulgte ham ned og inntok vadestedene ved Jordan mot Moab, og lot ikke en mann komme over.

And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

På den tiden slo de omkring ti tusen moabitter, alle kraftige og modige menn; ingen av dem unnslapp.

And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.

Slik ble Moab den dagen underkuet av Israels hånd, og landet hadde ro i åtti år.

So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

Etter ham kom Samgar, sønn av Anat, som slo seks hundre filistere med en oksedriverstav, og han frelste også Israel.

And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
