And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

Han svarte dem: Hva har jeg gjort sammenlignet med dere? Er ikke druene fra Efraim bedre enn innhøstingen fra Abi-Eser?

And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi-ezer?

Gud har overgitt midianittenes fyrster, Oreb og Seeb, i deres hender. Hva kunne jeg gjøre i forhold til dere? Da hørte de hans ord og la vreden mot ham bort.

God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

Gideon kom til Jordan og gikk over med de tre hundre mennene som var med ham, utmattet, men fortsatt forfølgende.

And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

Han dro derfra til Pnuel og talte til dem på samme måte: Men mennene i Pnuel svarte ham som mennene i Sukkot hadde gjort.

And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

Han sa også til mennene i Pnuel: Når jeg kommer tilbake i fred, skal jeg rive ned dette tårnet.

And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

Sebah og Salmunna var i Karkor med hæren sin, omtrent femten tusen menn, alle som var igjen av alle de østlige sønnenes hærer, for hundre og tjue tusen sverdbærende menn var falt.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

Gideon dro opp veien til dem som bodde i telt på østsiden av Noba og Jogbeta og slo hæren, for hæren følte seg trygg.

And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.

And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,

og fanget en ung mann fra Sukkots menn, og spurte ham ut: Han beskrev for ham fyrstene i Sukkot og byens eldste, syttisju menn.

And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.

Han kom til mennene i Sukkot og sa: Her er Sebah og Salmunna, som dere skjendet meg for, og sa: Er Sebah og Salmunna allerede i din hånd, siden vi skal gi brød til dine utmattede menn?

And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

Han tok byens eldste, ørkentorner og tistler, og med dem straffet han mennene i Sukkot.

And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

Han rev ned tårnet i Pnuel og drepte mennene i byen.

And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

Han sa: De var mine brødre, sønnene av min mor. Så sant Herren lever, hvis dere hadde spart dem, ville jeg ikke drepe dere.

And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

Han sa til Jeter, sin førstefødte: Reis deg og drep dem. Men gutten trakk ikke sitt sverd; han torde ikke, fordi han var ung.

And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

Sebah og Salmunna sa: Reis deg du og fall over oss, for slik mannen er, slik er hans styrke. Gideon reiste seg og drepte Sebah og Salmunna, og tok smykkene fra kamelenes nakker.

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks.

Mennene i Israel sa til Gideon: Hersk over oss, du og din sønn og din sønnesønn, for du har fridd oss fra Midianittenes hånd.

Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

Gideon sa til dem: Jeg vil ikke herske over dere, og min sønn skal heller ikke herske over dere. Herren skal herske over dere.

And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

Gideon sa til dem: Jeg ønsker en bønn fra dere, at hver av dere gir meg øreringene han tok som bytte. De hadde gulløreringer fordi de var ismaelitter.

And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

De svarte: Vi vil gi dem. De la ut et plagg, og hver mann kastet øreringene fra sitt bytte der.

And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

Vekten av gulløreringene han ba om var sytten hundre sekel gull, i tillegg til medaljer, halskjeder og purpurklærne som var på midianittenes konger, og kjedene som var om kamelenes nakker.

And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.

Gideon laget et efod av det og satte det opp i sin by, Ofra: Hele Israel spilte hore der, og det ble en snare for Gideon og hans hus.

And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

Slik ble Midian undertrykt av Israels barn, og de reiste ikke hodet igjen. Landet hadde fred i førti år i Gideons dager.

Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

Jerubba'al, Joasjs sønn, gikk og bodde i sitt eget hus.

And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

Gideon fikk sytti sønner, av sine egne barn: for han hadde mange koner.

And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

Hans medhustru i Sikem fødte ham også en sønn, som han kalte Abimelek.

And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

Gideon, sønn av Joasj, døde i en god alderdom og ble begravet i Joasjs, hans fars, grav i Ofra av abi'ezrittene.

And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.

Da Gideon var død, vendte Israels barn tilbake og spilte hore etter Baalene, og gjorde Ba'al-Berit til sin gud.

And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.

Israels barn husket ikke Herren sin Gud, som hadde utfriet dem fra alle fiendene på alle kanter.

And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

De viste heller ikke godhet mot Jerubba'als hus, nemlig Gideon, i forhold til all den gode han hadde vist mot Israel.

Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
