Etter som mange har tatt på seg å skrive en beretning om de ting som er sikkert trodd blant oss,

Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

slik de ble overlevert til oss av dem som fra begynnelsen var øyenvitner og tjenere av ordet;

Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophis,

That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

Det var i dagene da Herodes var konge over Judea, en prest ved navn Sakarias, av Abias gruppe, og hans kone var en av Arons døtre, og hun het Elisabet.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

De var begge rettferdige for Gud og levde uklanderlig etter alle Herrens bud og forskrifter.

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

Men de hadde ingen barn, for Elisabet var ufruktbar, og de var begge nå kommet langt opp i årene.

And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

Mens han utførte prestetjenesten for Gud etter rekkefølgen av sin gruppe,

And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

var det etter prestenes sedvane hans lodd å brenne røkelse da han gikk inn i Herrens tempel.

According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

Og hele folkemengden ba utenfor på røkelsens tidspunkt.

And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

Da viste en Herrens engel seg for ham stående ved høyre side av røkelsesalteret.

And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

Da Sakarias så ham, ble han urolig, og frykt falt over ham.

And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

Men engelen sa til ham: Frykt ikke, Sakarias, for din bønn er hørt. Din kone Elisabet skal føde deg en sønn, og du skal gi ham navnet Johannes.

But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

Han skal bli en glede og fryd for deg, og mange skal glede seg over hans fødsel.

And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

For han skal bli stor i Herrens øyne og skal ikke drikke vin eller sterk drikk, og han skal bli fylt med Den Hellige Ånd, like fra mors liv.

For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

Mange av Israels barn skal han vende til Herren deres Gud.

And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

Han skal gå foran ham i Åndens og Elias' kraft for å vende fedrenes hjerter til barna og de ulydige til å forstå de rettferdiges visdom, for å gjøre et folk rede for Herren.

And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Sakarias sa til engelen: Hvordan kan jeg vite dette? For jeg er en gammel mann, og min kone er langt oppe i årene.

And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

Engelen svarte og sa til ham: Jeg er Gabriel, som står framfor Gud, og jeg er sendt for å tale til deg og for å bringe deg dette glade budskap.

And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

Se, du skal bli stum og ikke kunne tale før den dag dette skjer, fordi du ikke trodde mine ord, som skal gå i oppfyllelse i sin tid.

And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

Folket ventet på Sakarias og undret seg over at han drøyde så lenge i tempelet.

And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

Da han kom ut, kunne han ikke tale til dem, og de forstod at han hadde sett et syn i tempelet. For han gjorde tegn til dem og forble stum.

And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

Da dagene for hans tjeneste var fullført, dro han hjem til sitt hus.

And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

Etter de dagene ble hans kone Elisabet gravid, og hun holdt seg skjult i fem måneder, og sa:

And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

Så har Herren gjort mot meg i dagene hvor han så til meg for å ta bort min skam blant folk.

Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

I den sjette måneden ble engelen Gabriel sendt fra Gud til en by i Galilea ved navn Nasaret,

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

til en jomfru som var trolovet med en mann som het Josef, av Davids hus, og jomfruens navn var Maria.

To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

Engelen kom til henne og sa: Vær hilset, du høyt begunstigede! Herren er med deg; velsignet er du blant kvinner.

And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Da hun så ham, ble hun forundret over hans ord og overveide hva slags hilsen dette kunne være.

And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of satation this should be.

Men engelen sa til henne: Frykt ikke, Maria, for du har funnet nåde hos Gud.

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

Se, du skal bli med barn og føde en sønn, og du skal gi ham navnet JESUS.

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

Han skal være stor og kalles den Høyestes sønn. Herren Gud skal gi ham hans far Davids trone,

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

og han skal herske over Jakobs hus for evig. Hans rike skal aldri ta slutt.

And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Maria sa til engelen: Hvordan skal dette skje, da jeg ikke har vært sammen med en mann?

Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

Engelen svarte henne: Den Hellige Ånd skal komme over deg, og Den Høyestes kraft skal overskygge deg; derfor skal også det hellige barnet som skal fødes av deg, kalles Guds sønn.

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Se, også din slektning Elisabet har unnfanget en sønn i sin alderdom, og det er den sjette måneden hun som ble kalt ufruktbar.

And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

For med Gud er ingenting umulig.

For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Maria sa: Se, Herrens tjenestekvinne. Det skje meg etter ditt ord. Og engelen forlot henne.

And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

I de dager sto Maria opp og dro med hast til fjellandet, til en by i Juda,

And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

hvor hun gikk inn i Sakarias' hus og hilste Elisabet.

And entered into the house of Zacharias, and sated Elisabeth.

Da Elisabet hørte Marias hilsen, sprang barnet i hennes liv, og Elisabet ble fylt med Den Hellige Ånd.

And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the satation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

Hun ropte høyt: Velsignet er du blant kvinner, og velsignet er frukten i ditt liv.

And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

Hvordan kan det ha seg at min Herres mor kommer til meg?

And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

For da lyden av din hilsen nådde mine ører, sprang barnet i mitt liv av fryd.

For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy satation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

Velsignet er hun som trodde, for det som er sagt til henne av Herren, skal oppfylles.

And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

Da sa Maria: Min sjel opphøyer Herren,

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

og min ånd har frydet seg i Gud, min frelser.

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For han har sett ned til sin tjenerinnes ringe stand. Fra nå av skal alle slekter prise meg salig.

For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

For han som er mektig, har gjort store ting mot meg, og hellig er hans navn.

For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

Hans barmhjertighet hviler over dem som frykter ham fra slekt til slekt.

And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

Han har vist makt med sin arm; han har spredt dem som er stolte i hjertets tanker.

He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

Han har styrtet herskere ned fra troner, og løftet opp de ydmyke.

He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

Han har mettet sultne med gode gaver, og sendt rike tomhendte bort.

He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

Han har tatt seg av Israel, sin tjener, ved å huske på sin miskunn,

He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

slik han talte til våre fedre, til Abraham og hans ætt for evig.

As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

Maria ble hos henne i omtrent tre måneder, og vendte så tilbake til sitt eget hus.

And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

Elisabet fullførte sin tid og fødte en sønn.

Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

Hennes naboer og slektninger hørte hvordan Herren hadde vist henne stor barmhjertighet, og de gledet seg med henne.

And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

På den åttende dag kom de for å omskjære barnet, og de ville gi ham navnet Sakarias, etter hans far.

And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

Men hans mor svarte: Nei, han skal kalles Johannes.

And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

De sa til henne: Det er ingen blant din slekt som har dette navnet.

And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

De gjorde tegn til hans far for å spørre hva han ville at barnet skulle hete.

And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

Han ba om en skrivetablett og skrev: Hans navn er Johannes. Da undret alle seg.

And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

Straks åpnet hans munn seg, og han begynte å tale og priste Gud.

And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

Og frykt kom over alle som bodde rundt dem, og alt dette ble omtalt over hele høylandet i Judea.

And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

Alle som hørte om det, tenkte over det i hjertene sine og sa: Hva vil det bli av dette barnet? For Herrens hånd var med ham.

And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

Hans far Sakarias ble fylt med Den Hellige Ånd og profeterte og sa:

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

Velsignet være Herren, Israels Gud, for han har sett til sitt folk og forløst dem.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

Han har reist opp et frelsens horn for oss i sin tjener Davids hus,

And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

slik han talte ved munnen til sine hellige profeter fra eldgamle dager:

As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

at vi skulle bli frelst fra våre fiender og fra hånden til alle dem som hater oss;

That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

for å vise barmhjertighet mot våre fedre og huske sin hellige pakt,

To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

eden som han sverget til vår far Abraham,

The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

om å gi oss at vi, etter å ha blitt fridd ut av våre fienders hånd, kan tjene ham uten frykt,

That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

i hellighet og rettferd for hans åsyn, alle våre livs dager.

In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

Og du, barn, skal kalles den Høyestes profet, for du skal gå foran Herrens åsyn for å forberede hans veier,

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

for å gi hans folk kunnskap om frelsen gjennom tilgivelse av deres synder,

To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

ved vår Guds ømme barmhjertighet, som soloppgangen fra det høye har gjestet oss med,

Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

for å gi lys til dem som sitter i mørke og dødens skygge, for å lede våre føtter inn på fredens vei.

To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Barnet vokste og ble sterkt i ånden, og var i ødemarken til den dag han skulle tre fram for Israel.

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
