And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

Og alle dro for å la seg registrere, hver til sin egen by.

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

Også Josef dro opp fra Galilea, fra byen Nasaret, til Judea, til Davids by som kalles Betlehem, fordi han var av Davids hus og ætt.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

Han dro for å la seg registrere sammen med Maria, sin forlovede, som var med barn.

To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

Mens de var der, kom tiden da hun skulle føde.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

Og hun fødte sin førstefødte sønn, svøpte ham i et tøystykke og la ham i en krybbe, for det var ikke plass til dem i herberget.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

I samme område var det hyrder som holdt til ute på markene og holdt nattevakt over flokken sin.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

Og se, en Herrens engel stod foran dem, og Herrens herlighet lyste omkring dem, og de ble fryktelig redde.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

Men engelen sa til dem: Frykt ikke! For se, jeg forkynner dere en stor glede, som skal være for alle mennesker.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For i dag er det født dere en Frelser i Davids by, han er Kristus, Herren.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Og dette skal være tegnet for dere: Dere skal finne et barn svøpt i tøy og liggende i en krybbe.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Plutselig var det sammen med engelen en mengde av den himmelske hær som lovpriste Gud og sa:

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Ære være Gud i det høyeste, og fred på jorden, blant mennesker Gud har glede i.

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Da englene hadde forlatt dem og dratt opp til himmelen, sa hyrdene til hverandre: La oss dra til Betlehem og se det som har skjedd, som Herren har latt oss få vite.

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

De skyndte seg av sted og fant Maria og Josef, og barnet som lå i krybben.

And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

Da de hadde sett det, fortalte de videre det som var blitt sagt dem om dette barnet.

And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

Alle som hørte det, undret seg over det som hyrdene fortalte dem.

And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

Men Maria tok vare på alt dette og grunnet på det i sitt hjerte.

But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

Hyrdene vendte tilbake, og de lovpriste og priste Gud for alt de hadde hørt og sett, slik det var fortalt dem.

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Da åtte dager var gått og barnet skulle omskjæres, fikk det navnet Jesus, som engelen hadde gitt det før det ble unnfanget i mors liv.

And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

(As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

og for å ofre et par turtelduer eller to unge duer, som det er foreskrevet i Herrens lov.

And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

Og se, det var en mann i Jerusalem ved navn Simeon; han var rettferdig og gudfryktig og ventet på Israels trøst, og Den Hellige Ånd var over ham.

And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

Det var åpenbart for ham ved Den Hellige Ånd at han ikke skulle se døden før han hadde sett Herrens Messias.

And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

Han kom drevet av Ånden til tempelet, og da foreldrene brakte inn barnet Jesus for å gjøre med ham som skikken var etter loven,

And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

tok han ham i armene, priste Gud og sa:

Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

Herre, nå lar du din tjener fare herfra i fred, etter ditt ord.

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

For mine øyne har sett din frelse,

For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

som du har beredt i alle folks åsyn,

Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

et lys som er til åpenbaring for hedningene og til herlighet for ditt folk Israel.

A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

Josef og barnets mor undret seg over det som ble sagt om ham.

And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

Simeon velsignet dem og sa til Maria, barnets mor: Se, dette barnet er satt til fall og oppreisning for mange i Israel, og til et tegn som blir motsagt,

And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

Det var en profetinne, Anna, datter av Fanuel, av Asers stamme. Hun var svært gammel og hadde levd med sin mann i syv år etter sitt jomfrueliv,

And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

og var enke, åtti fire år gammel. Hun forlot aldri tempelet, men tjente Gud med faste og bønn natt og dag.

And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

På det tidspunktet kom også hun og lovpriste Gud, og talte om barnet til alle de som ventet på forløsning i Jerusalem.

And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

Så snart de hadde fullført alt etter Herrens lov, vendte de tilbake til Galilea, til sin egen by Nasaret.

And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

Og barnet vokste, ble sterkt, full av visdom, og Guds nåde var over ham.

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

Hans foreldre dro hvert år til Jerusalem på påskefesten.

Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

Og da han var tolv år, dro de opp til Jerusalem etter skikk og bruk på høytiden.

And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

Da de hadde fullført dagene og var på vei hjemover, ble barnet Jesus igjen i Jerusalem, uten at Josef og hans mor visste om det.

And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

De antok at han var med i reisefølget, og gikk en dagsreise, og lette etter ham blant slektninger og bekjente.

But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

Da de ikke fant ham, vendte de tilbake til Jerusalem for å lete etter ham.

And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

Tre dager senere fant de ham i tempelet, der han satt blant lærerne, lyttet til dem og stilte dem spørsmål.

And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

Alle som hørte ham, var forundret over hans klokskap og svar.

And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

Da de så ham, ble de forbauset, og hans mor sa til ham: Barn, hvorfor har du gjort dette mot oss? Se, din far og jeg har lett etter deg med smerte.

And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

Han svarte dem: Hvorfor lette dere etter meg? Visste dere ikke at jeg må være i min Fars hus?

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

Men de forstod ikke det ordet han talte til dem.

And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

Han dro så med dem og kom til Nasaret, og var lydig mot dem. Men hans mor tok vare på alle disse ordene i sitt hjerte.

And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

Og Jesus vokste i visdom og alder, og i nåde hos Gud og mennesker.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
