Hele flokken reiste seg og førte ham til Pilatus.

And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

De begynte å anklage ham og sa: Vi har funnet at denne mannen forderver folket og forbyr å gi skatt til keiseren, og han sier at han er Messias, en konge.

And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

Pilatus spurte ham: Er du jødenes konge? Og han svarte: Du sier det.

And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

Da sa Pilatus til overprestene og folket: Jeg finner ingen skyld hos denne mannen.

Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

Men de fortsatte enda ivrigere og sa: Han oppvigler folket i hele Judea med sin undervisning, fra Galilea og helt hit.

And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

Da Pilatus hørte om Galilea, spurte han om mannen var galileer.

When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.

Da han forstod at han hørte under Herodes' myndighet, sendte han ham til Herodes, som også var i Jerusalem på denne tiden.

And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

Da Herodes så Jesus, ble han svært glad, for han hadde lenge ønsket å se ham, fordi han hadde hørt mye om ham, og håpet å få se et mirakel gjort av ham.

And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

Herodes stilte ham mange spørsmål, men Jesus svarte ham ikke.

Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

Overprestene og de skriftlærde stod der og anklaget ham heftig.

And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.

Herodes og hans soldater foraktet og hånte ham, kledde ham i en praktfull kappe og sendte ham tilbake til Pilatus.

And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

Den samme dag ble Pilatus og Herodes venner, for før hadde de vært i fiendskap med hverandre.

And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

Pilatus kalte sammen overprestene, lederne og folket

And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

og sa til dem: Dere har brakt denne mannen til meg som en som forderver folket, og se, jeg har forhørt ham i deres nærvær og ikke funnet ham skyldig i noen av de tingene dere anklager ham for.

Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:

Heller ikke Herodes, for han har sendt ham tilbake til oss. Se, han har ikke gjort noe som fortjener døden.

No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.

Derfor vil jeg irettesette ham og så løslate ham.

I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

(For det var nødvendig for ham å løslate én til dem under høytiden.)

(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)

Men de ropte alle sammen: Bort med denne mannen, og løslat Barabbas til oss!

And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:

(Han var kastet i fengsel for et opprør i byen og for mord.)

(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

Pilatus ønsket å løslate Jesus, så han talte til dem igjen.

Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.

Men de ropte: Korsfest ham! Korsfest ham!

But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

For tredje gang sa han til dem: Hva ondt har han gjort? Jeg har ikke funnet noe hos ham som fortjener døden. Derfor vil jeg irettesette ham og la ham gå.

And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.

Men de ropte høyt og krevde at han skulle bli korsfestet, og deres rop seiret.

And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.

Så Pilatus dømte at det skulle skje som de krevde.

And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

Han løslot den som var kastet i fengsel for opprør og mord, den de ønsket å få løslatt; men han overgav Jesus til deres vilje.

And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

Da de førte ham bort, grep de tak i en mann ved navn Simon fra Kyrene, som kom inn fra landet, og de la korset på ham for at han skulle bære det etter Jesus.

And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

En stor mengde mennesker fulgte med, også kvinner som sørget og gråt over ham.

And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.

Men Jesus vendte seg mot dem og sa: Jerusalems døtre, gråt ikke over meg, men gråt over dere selv og deres barn.

But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

For se, det kommer dager da folk vil si: Lykkelige er de ufruktbare, de som aldri har født barn, og brystene som aldri har ammet.

For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

Da skal de begynne å si til fjellene: Fall over oss, og til haugene: Skjul oss.

Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

For hvis de gjør dette med det grønne treet, hva vil skje med det tørre?

For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

Sammen med ham ble også to andre forbrytere ført bort for å bli henrettet.

And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

Da de kom til stedet som kalles Golgata, korsfestet de ham der sammen med forbryterne, én på hans høyre side og én på hans venstre.

And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

Jesus sa: Far, tilgi dem, for de vet ikke hva de gjør. Og de delte klærne hans mellom seg og kastet lodd om dem.

Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Folket stod og så på. Lederne hånte ham og sa: Han frelste andre, la ham frelse seg selv hvis han er Kristus, Guds utvalgte.

And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.

Soldatene hånte også ham, de kom bort til ham og tilbød ham eddik

And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,

og sa: Hvis du er jødenes konge, frels deg selv.

And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

Over ham var det også satt en innskrift: Dette er jødenes konge.

And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

En av forbryterne som hang der, hånte ham og sa: Er ikke du Messias? Frels deg selv og oss!

And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

Men den andre irettesatte ham og sa: Frykter du ikke Gud, du som er under den samme dommen?

But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

Vi får den straffen vi fortjener for våre gjerninger, men denne mannen har ikke gjort noe galt.

And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

Og han sa til Jesus: Herre, husk meg når du kommer i ditt rike.

And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

Jesus svarte: Sannelig, jeg sier deg, i dag skal du være med meg i paradis.

And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Det var omkring den sjette time da det ble mørke over hele jorden frem til den niende time.

And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

Solen ble formørket, og forhenget i tempelet revnet midt på.

And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

Jesus ropte høyt: Far, i dine hender overgir jeg min ånd. Og da han hadde sagt dette, utåndet han.

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

Da offiseren så det som skjedde, priste han Gud og sa: Sannelig, denne mannen var rettferdig.

Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

Alle som var samlet for å se på, slo seg for brystet og vendte hjem da de så hva som skjedde.

And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.

Alle hans venner, og de kvinnene som hadde fulgt ham fra Galilea, stod langt borte og så på.

And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

Se, det var en mann ved navn Josef, et medlem av rådet, en god og rettferdig mann.

And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counseller; and he was a good man, and a just:

Han hadde ikke samtykket i rådets og handlingens beslutning. Han kom fra Arimatea, en jødisk by, og han ventet selv på Guds rike.

(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

Denne mannen gikk til Pilatus og ba om Jesu legeme.

This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

Han tok det ned, svøpte det i lintøy og la det i en grav uthugd i stein, hvor ingen ennå var blitt lagt.

And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

Det var forberedelsesdagen, og sabbaten nærmet seg.

And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

Kvinnene som hadde kommet med ham fra Galilea, fulgte etter og så graven og hvordan legemet ble lagt der.

And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

Så vendte de tilbake og forberedte krydder og salver. På sabbatsdagen hvilte de i samsvar med budet.

And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
