Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

Under øversteprestene Annas og Kaifas kom Guds ord til Johannes, Sakarjas sønn, i ødemarken.

Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

Og han gikk rundt i hele området ved Jordan og forkynte en omvendelsesdåp til syndenes tilgivelse.

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

Som det står skrevet i profeten Jesajas bok: En røst roper i ødemarken: Gjør Herrens vei klar, gjør hans stier rette.

As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Hver dal skal fylles, og hvert fjell og hver høyde skal senkes. Det krokete skal bli rett, og de ujevne veiene skal jevnes ut.

Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

Og alle mennesker skal se Guds frelse.

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

Han sa da til folkemengden som kom ut for å bli døpt av ham: Ormeyngel, hvem har advart dere mot å flykte fra den kommende vreden?

Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Bær derfor frukt som viser omvendelse, og begynn ikke å si til dere selv: Vi har Abraham til far. For jeg sier dere at Gud kan reise opp barn til Abraham av disse steinene.

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

Øksen er allerede lagt ved roten av trærne. Hvert tre som ikke bærer god frukt, blir hugget ned og kastet på ilden.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Og folkene spurte ham: Hva skal vi da gjøre?

And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

Han svarte og sa til dem: Den som har to kjortler, skal dele med den som ikke har noen. Og den som har mat, skal gjøre det samme.

He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

Også tollerne kom for å bli døpt og sa til ham: Lærer, hva skal vi gjøre?

Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

Han sa til dem: Krev ikke inn mer enn det som er foreskrevet.

And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

Også soldatene spurte ham: Og vi, hva skal vi gjøre? Og han sa til dem: Gjør ikke urett mot noen eller anklag noen falskt, og vær fornøyde med deres lønn.

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

Folket gikk nå i forventning, og alle undret seg i sine hjerter om Johannes kanskje var Kristus.

And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

Johannes svarte dem alle: Jeg døper dere med vann, men det kommer en som er mektigere enn jeg, og jeg er ikke verdig til å løse sandalremmen hans. Han skal døpe dere med Den hellige ånd og ild.

John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

Hans skovle er i hånden, og han skal rense treskeplassen grundig. Han skal samle kornet i låven, men agnene skal han brenne med en ild som ikke kan slukkes.

Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

Med mange andre oppfordringer forkynte han budskapet til folket.

And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

Men Herodes landsfyrsten, som var blitt refs av ham for Herodias, sin bror Filips hustru, og for alle de onde gjerningene Herodes hadde gjort,

But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

la enda dette til alt annet, at han kastet Johannes i fengsel.

Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

Da hele folket ble døpt, skjedde det at også Jesus ble døpt. Mens han ba, åpnet himmelen seg.

Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

Den hellige ånd dalte da ned over ham i skikkelse av en due, og en stemme fra himmelen sa: Du er min elskede Sønn, i deg har jeg velbehag.

And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Jesus selv var omkring tretti år gammel da han begynte sin gjerning. Han ble ansett som sønn av Josef, som var sønn av Eli.

And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
