Det skjedde en gang da folk trengte seg om ham for å høre Guds ord, at han sto ved Gennesaretsjøen,

And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

og så to båter som lå ved sjøkanten. Fiskerne hadde gått ut av dem og vasket sine garn.

And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

Han gikk ombord i en av båtene, som tilhørte Simon, og ba ham legge litt ut fra land. Så satte han seg ned og underviste folket fra båten.

And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

Da han hadde avsluttet sin tale, sa han til Simon: «Legg ut på dypet og kast ut garnene deres til fangst.»

Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

Simon svarte: «Mester, vi har strevd hele natten og ikke fått noe. Men på ditt ord vil jeg kaste ut garnet.»

And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

Da de gjorde dette, fanget de en stor mengde fisk, så garnet var på nippet til å revne.

And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

De vinket til sine samarbeidspartnere i den andre båten for å få hjelp. De kom og fylte begge båtene, så de begynte å synke.

And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

Da Simon Peter så dette, falt han ned for Jesu knær og sa: «Gå bort fra meg, Herre, for jeg er en syndig mann.»

When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

For han og alle som var med ham, var forundret over fiskefangsten de hadde fått.

For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

Slik var det også med Jakob og Johannes, Sebedeus’ sønner, som var Simons samarbeidspartnere. Jesus sa til Simon: «Frykt ikke! Fra nå av skal du fange mennesker.»

And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

Da de hadde dratt båtene i land, forlot de alt og fulgte ham.

And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

En annen gang, mens han var i en by, kom en mann full av spedalskhet. Da han så Jesus, kastet han seg ned på sitt ansikt og ba: «Herre, om du vil, kan du gjøre meg ren.»

And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

Jesus rakte ut hånden, rørte ved ham og sa: «Jeg vil; bli ren!» Og straks forlot spedalskheten ham.

And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

Jesus formante ham om ikke å si det til noen, men å gå og vise seg for presten og ofre det Moses hadde påbudt, som et vitnesbyrd for dem.

And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

Men ryktet om ham spredte seg enda mer, og store mengder samlet seg for å høre og bli helbredet for sine sykdommer.

But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.

Men han trakk seg tilbake til ødemarken og ba.

And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

En dag da han underviste, satt det fariseere og lovlærere der som var kommet fra alle byene i Galilea, Judea og Jerusalem. Herrens kraft var der til å helbrede.

And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

Og se, noen menn kom med en lam mann på en båre, og de forsøkte å bringe ham inn og legge ham foran Jesus.

And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.

Da de ikke kunne finne en måte å få ham inn på på grunn av folkemengden, gikk de opp på taket, fjernet deler av det og firte ham ned med båren midt foran Jesus.

And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.

Da Jesus så deres tro, sa han: «Menneske, dine synder er tilgitt.»

And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

De skriftlærde og fariseerne begynte å diskutere og sa: «Hvem er denne mannen som spotter? Hvem kan tilgi synder uten Gud alene?»

And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?

Men Jesus, som forstod deres tanker, svarte dem: «Hvorfor tenker dere slik i deres hjerter?

But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?

Hva er lettest å si: ‘Dine synder er tilgitt’ eller ‘Stå opp og gå’?

Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?

Men for at dere skal vite at Menneskesønnen har makt på jorden til å tilgi synder – sa han til den lamme: ‘Jeg sier deg: Stå opp, ta båren din og gå hjem!’»

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.

Straks reiste han seg foran dem, tok det han lå på, og dro hjem mens han priste Gud.

And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

Alle ble grepet av undring, og de priste Gud. De ble fylt med frykt og sa: «Vi har sett noe utrolig i dag.»

And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

Deretter gikk han ut og så en toller ved navn Levi sitte ved tollboden. Han sa til ham: «Følg meg!»

And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.

Levi reiste seg, forlot alt og fulgte ham.

And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

Levi holdt en stor fest for ham i sitt hus. Der var en stor mengde tollere og andre som satt til bords med dem.

And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.

Men fariseerne og deres skriftlærde klaget til hans disipler og sa: «Hvorfor spiser og drikker dere med tollere og syndere?»

But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

Jesus svarte dem: «Det er ikke de friske som trenger lege, men de syke.

And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

Jeg er ikke kommet for å kalle rettferdige, men syndere til omvendelse.»

I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

De sa til ham: «Johannes’ disipler faster ofte og ber, og det samme gjør fariseernes disipler, men dine spiser og drikker.»

And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?

Jesus svarte: «Kan dere få brudgommens følgesvenner til å faste mens brudgommen er med dem?

And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?

Men det skal komme dager da brudgommen blir tatt fra dem, og da skal de faste i de dagene.»

But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

Han fortalte dem også en lignelse: «Ingen setter et stykke av et nytt plagg på et gammelt. Gjør de det, vil det nye rive det gamle i stykker, og stykket passer ikke til det gamle.

And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.

Ingen fyller ny vin i gamle skinnsekker; ellers vil den nye vinen sprenge sekkene, og vinen blir spilt og sekkene ødelagt.

And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

Nei, ny vin må fylles i nye skinnsekker, og begge deler blir bevart.

But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

Ingen som har drukket gammel vin, ønsker ny; for de sier: ‘Den gamle er best.’»

No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
