Det skjedde på den andre sabbaten etter den første at han gikk gjennom kornåkrene, og disiplene hans plukket aks, gned dem i hendene og spiste.

And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples pcked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

Og noen av fariseerne sa til dem: Hvorfor gjør dere det som ikke er tillatt på sabbaten?

And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

Jesus svarte dem og sa: Har dere ikke lest hva David gjorde da han selv var sulten, og de som var med ham?

And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;

Hvordan han gikk inn i Guds hus, og tok og spiste skuebrødene, og ga også til dem som var med ham, som det ikke er lov å spise foruten prestene?

How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?

Og han sa til dem: Menneskesønnen er også Herre over sabbaten.

And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Det skjedde også på en annen sabbat at han gikk inn i synagogen og underviste, og der var en mann hvis høyre hånd var visnet.

And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.

De skriftlærde og fariseerne holdt øye med ham, for å se om han ville helbrede på sabbaten, slik at de kunne finne en anklage mot ham.

And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.

Men han visste hva de tenkte, og han sa til mannen med den visne hånden: Reis deg og stå frem midt iblant oss. Og han reiste seg og sto frem.

But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.

Da sa Jesus til dem: Jeg vil spørre dere om en ting; er det tillatt på sabbaten å gjøre godt eller ondt? Å redde et liv eller ødelegge det?

Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?

Og han så rundt på dem alle og sa til mannen: Strekk ut hånden din. Og han gjorde det, og hånden hans ble hel som den andre.

And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

Og de ble fylt av harme og diskuterte med hverandre hva de skulle gjøre med Jesus.

And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

Det skjedde i de dagene at han gikk ut til et fjell for å be, og tilbrakte hele natten i bønn til Gud.

And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

Og da det ble dag, kalte han disiplene til seg, og av dem valgte han tolv, som han også kalte apostler.

And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

Simon, som han også kalte Peter, og Andreas, hans bror, Jakob og Johannes, Filip og Bartolomeus,

Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

Matteus og Tomas, Jakob, sønn av Alfeus, og Simon, som kalles Seloten,

Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,

Og Judas, bror til Jakob, og Judas Iskariot, som også ble forræderen.

And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.

Han kom ned sammen med dem og sto på en slette, sammen med en stor flokk av sine disipler og en stor mengde folk fra hele Judea og Jerusalem, og fra kysten av Tyros og Sidon, som kom for å høre ham og bli helbredet for sine sykdommer.

And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

De som var plaget av urene ånder ble også helbredet.

And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

Hele folkemengden søkte å røre ved ham, for det gikk kraft ut fra ham, og han helbredet dem alle.

And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

Han løftet øynene mot sine disipler og sa: Salige er dere fattige, for Guds rike er deres.

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

Salige er dere som nå hungrer, for dere skal bli mette. Salige er dere som nå gråter, for dere skal le.

Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

Salige er dere når mennesker hater dere, og når de skiller dere ut og håner dere, og kaster bort deres navn som ondt, på grunn av Menneskesønnens skyld.

Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.

Gled dere på den dagen og hopp av fryd, for se, deres lønn er stor i himmelen. For slik gjorde deres fedre mot profetene.

Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.

Men ve dere rike, for dere har alt fått deres trøst.

But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

Ve dere som nå er mette, for dere skal hungre. Ve dere som nå ler, for dere skal sørge og gråte.

Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.

Ve dere når alle mennesker taler godt om dere, for slik gjorde deres fedre mot de falske profetene.

Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

Men til dere som hører, sier jeg: Elsk deres fiender, gjør godt mot dem som hater dere.

But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,

Velsign dem som forbanner dere, og be for dem som behandler dere dårlig.

Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

Og til den som slår deg på det ene kinnet, vend også det andre til; og den som tar fra deg kappen, nekt ham ikke kjortelen også.

And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.

Gi til alle som ber deg, og fra den som tar fra deg det som tilhører deg, krev det ikke tilbake.

Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

Som dere vil at andre skal gjøre mot dere, slik gjør også mot dem.

And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

Hvis dere elsker dem som elsker dere, hvilken takk fortjener dere? For syndere elsker også dem som elsker dem.

For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.

Og hvis dere gjør godt mot dem som gjør godt mot dere, hvilken takk fortjener dere? Slik gjør også syndere.

And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.

Og hvis dere låner til dem som dere håper å få tilbake, hvilken takk fortjener dere? For syndere låner også til syndere for å få like mye tilbake.

And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.

Men elsk deres fiender, gjør godt og lån ut uten å vente noe tilbake, og deres lønn skal være stor, og dere skal være Den Høyestes barn. For han er god mot de utakknemlige og onde.

But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

Vær derfor barmhjertige, slik deres Far er barmhjertig.

Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

Døm ikke, så skal dere ikke bli dømt. Fordøm ikke, så skal dere ikke bli fordømt. Tilgi, så skal dere bli tilgitt.

Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

Gi, så skal det bli gitt til dere. Et godt mål, presset sammen, ristet og overfylt, skal bli lagt i fanget deres. For med det samme mål som dere måler, skal det måles tilbake til dere.

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Han fortalte dem en lignelse: Kan en blind lede en blind? Vil de ikke begge falle i grøften?

And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

En disippel er ikke over sin mester, men hver som er utlært skal bli som sin mester.

The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

Hvorfor ser du flisen i din brors øye, men legger ikke merke til bjelken i ditt eget øye?

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Eller hvordan kan du si til din bror: 'Bror, la meg ta ut flisen som er i ditt øye,' når du ikke ser bjelken i ditt eget øye? Hyklersk, ta først bjelken ut av ditt eget øye, så du klart kan se å ta ut flisen i din brors øye.

Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

Et godt tre bærer ikke dårlig frukt, og et dårlig tre bærer ikke god frukt.

For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

For hvert tre kjennes på sin egen frukt. Man høster ikke fikener av torner, og heller ikke druer fra tistler.

For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.

En god mann bringer frem det gode fra hjertets gode skatt, og en ond mann bringer frem det onde fra hjertets onde skatt. For det hjertet er fullt av, det taler munnen.

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Hvorfor kaller dere meg: Herre, Herre, og gjør ikke det jeg sier?

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

Hver den som kommer til meg og hører mine ord og gjør etter dem, vil jeg vise dere hvem han er lik:

Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:

Han er lik en mann som bygde et hus, gravde dypt og la grunnmuren på klippen. Da flommen kom, strømmet elven mot huset, men kunne ikke ryste det, for det var godt bygd.

He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

Men den som hører og ikke gjør etter dem, er lik en mann som bygde et hus på jorden uten grunnmur. Når elven strømmet mot det, falt det straks sammen, og ødeleggelsen av det huset var stor.

But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
