Tidlig om morgenen holdt yppersteprestene et møte med de eldste og de skriftlærde og hele rådet. De bandt Jesus og førte ham bort og overleverte ham til Pilatus.

And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.

Pilatus spurte ham: "Er du jødenes konge?" Og han svarte ham: "Du sier det selv."

And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it.

Yppersteprestene anklaget ham for mange ting, men han svarte ingenting.

And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.

Pilatus spurte ham igjen: "Svarer du ingenting? Se hvor mange saker de anklager deg for."

And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.

Men Jesus svarte fortsatt ingenting, og Pilatus undret seg.

But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

Under høytiden hadde han for vane å løslate en fange for folket, den de ønsket.

Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.

Det var en mann ved navn Barabbas, som satt fengslet sammen med noen som hadde deltatt i et opprør og begått drap under opprøret.

And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.

Folkemengden ropte og begynte å be Pilatus om å gjøre som han pleide for dem.

And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.

Pilatus svarte dem: "Vil dere at jeg skal løslate jødenes konge for dere?"

But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

For han visste at yppersteprestene hadde overgitt ham av misunnelse.

For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.

Men yppersteprestene egget opp folkemengden til heller å be om Barabbas.

But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.

Pilatus spurte dem igjen: "Hva vil dere da at jeg skal gjøre med ham som dere kaller jødenes konge?"

And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?

De ropte igjen: "Korsfest ham!"

And they cried out again, Crucify him.

Pilatus sa til dem: "Hva ondt har han gjort?" Men de ropte enda høyere: "Korsfest ham!"

Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.

Pilatus ville gjøre folket til lags, så han løslot Barabbas for dem. Han lot Jesus bli pisket og overga ham til å bli korsfestet.

And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

Soldatene førte Jesus inn i palasset, som ble kalt pretorium, og samlet hele vaktstyrken.

And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.

De kledde ham i en purpurkappe og flettet en krone av torner og satte den på hodet hans.

And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,

Så begynte de å hilse ham: "Vær hilset, jødenes konge!"

And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

De slo ham i hodet med en stav, spyttet på ham, og knelte ned for ham i tilbedelse.

And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

Da de hadde hånet ham, tok de av purpurkappen og kledde ham i hans egne klær, og de førte ham ut for å korsfeste ham.

And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

De tvang en forbipasserende, Simon fra Kyrene, far til Alexander og Rufus, som kom fra landet, til å bære hans kors.

And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.

De førte ham til stedet Golgata, som betyr "Hodeskallestedet".

And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.

De tilbød ham vin blandet med myrra, men han tok ikke imot det.

And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.

Da de hadde korsfestet ham, delte de klærne hans mellom seg ved å kaste lodd om hva hver av dem skulle få.

And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.

Det var den tredje timen da de korsfestet ham.

And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

Innskriften med anklagen mot ham lød: "Jødenes konge".

And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Sammen med ham korsfestet de to røvere, den ene på hans høyre side, den andre på venstre.

And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

Og Skriften ble oppfylt, som sier: "Han ble regnet blant lovbrytere."

And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

De som gikk forbi spottet ham og ristet på hodet og sa: "Aha! Du som river ned tempelet og bygger det opp igjen på tre dager,

And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

frels deg selv og kom ned fra korset!"

Save thyself, and come down from the cross.

På samme måte spottet også yppersteprestene blant seg selv sammen med de skriftlærde og sa: "Han frelste andre, men seg selv kan han ikke frelse.

Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.

La nå Kristus, Israels konge, stige ned fra korset, så vi kan se og tro." De som var korsfestet sammen med ham, hånet ham også.

Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

Da den sjette timen kom, ble det mørke over hele landet fram til den niende timen.

And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

På den niende timen ropte Jesus med høy røst: "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabaktani?" som betyr "Min Gud, min Gud, hvorfor har du forlatt meg?"

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Noen av dem som sto der, sa da de hørte det: "Se, han roper på Elias."

And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

En av dem løp og fylte en svamp med eddik og satte den på en stav og ga ham å drikke og sa: "Vent, la oss se om Elias kommer for å ta ham ned."

And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.

Jesus ropte med høy røst og utåndet.

And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

Forhenget i tempelet revnet i to, fra øverst til nederst.

And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.

Da offiseren som sto rett foran ham så hvordan han utåndet, sa han: "Sannelig, denne mannen var Guds Sønn."

And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

Kvinner sto på avstand og så på, blant dem var Maria Magdalena og Maria, mor til Jakob den yngre og Joses, og Salome.

There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

De hadde fulgt Jesus i Galilea og vært til tjeneste for ham, og det var mange andre kvinner som hadde kommet opp med ham til Jerusalem.

(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.

Da det allerede var blitt kveld, og siden det var forberedelsesdagen, dagen før sabbaten,

And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

kom Josef fra Arimatea, et anerkjent medlem av rådet som også ventet på Guds rike. Han tok mot til seg og gikk til Pilatus og ba om Jesu kropp.

Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counseller, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

Pilatus undret seg over at han allerede var død. Han tilkalte offiseren og spurte om det var lenge siden han døde.

And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

Da han fikk bekreftet det fra offiseren, ga han Josef tillatelse til å ta kroppen.

And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

Josef kjøpte et linklede, tok Jesus ned, svøpte ham i linkledet og la ham i en grav som var hugget ut i fjellet. Han rullet en stein foran inngangen til graven.

And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

Maria Magdalena og Maria, mor til Joses, så hvor han ble lagt.

And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.
