Og de kom over til den andre siden av sjøen, til landet Gadarenerne.

And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

Da han steg ut av båten, møtte han straks en mann med en uren ånd, som kom ut fra gravene.

And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

Han bodde blant gravene, og ingen kunne binde ham, ikke engang med lenker.

Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:

For han hadde ofte blitt bundet med fotlenker og lenker, men lenkene ble revet i stykker av ham, og fotlenkene ble brutt; ingen kunne tøyle ham.

Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

Alltid, dag og natt, var han i fjellene og i gravene, ropte og skar seg selv med steiner.

And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

Men da han så Jesus på lang avstand, løp han og falt ned for ham,

But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,

ropte med høy røst og sa: Hva har jeg med deg å gjøre, Jesus, du Guds høyeste sønn? Jeg ber deg ved Gud, at du ikke plager meg.

And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

For han hadde sagt til ham: Kom ut av mannen, du urene ånd.

For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

Og han spurte ham: Hva er ditt navn? Og han svarte og sa: Mitt navn er Legion, for vi er mange.

And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

Og han bønnfalt ham sterkt om ikke å sende dem ut av landet.

And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

Og der på fjellsiden var det en stor flokk svin som beitet.

Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.

Og alle de onde åndene bønnfalt ham, og sa: Send oss inn i svinene, så vi kan gå inn i dem.

And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.

Og med en gang tillot Jesus dem å gjøre det. De urene åndene kom ut og gikk inn i svinene. Og flokken, som var omkring to tusen, styrtet seg utfor det bratte fjellet og druknet i sjøen.

And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

De som gjette svinene, flyktet og fortalte det i byen og på landsbygda. Da kom folk for å se hva som hadde skjedd.

And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

De kom til Jesus og så mannen som hadde vært besatt av en ond ånd, han som hadde legionen, sittende der, kledd og ved sans og samling, og de ble redde.

And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

Og de som hadde sett det, fortalte dem hvordan det hadde gått til med den besatte, og hva som hadde skjedd med svinene.

And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.

Og de begynte å be ham om å dra bort fra deres område.

And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.

Da han gikk ombord i båten, ba mannen som hadde vært besatt, om å få være med ham.

And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.

Men Jesus lot ham ikke, men sa: Gå hjem til dine, og fortell dem hvor store ting Herren har gjort for deg, og hvor barmhjertig han har vært mot deg.

Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

Og han dro av sted og begynte å fortelle i Dekapolis hvor store ting Jesus hadde gjort for ham, og alle undret seg.

And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

Da Jesus igjen kom over til den andre siden i båt, samlet mye folk seg rundt ham, og han var ved sjøen.

And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.

Da kom en av synagogeforstanderne, som het Jairus, og da han så ham, falt han ned for hans føtter.

And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,

Han bønnfalt ham innstendig og sa: Min lille datter ligger for døden. Kom og legg dine hender på henne, så hun kan bli frisk og leve.

And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.

Jesus gikk med ham, og mye folk fulgte ham og trengte seg om ham.

And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.

Og det var en kvinne som hadde hatt blødninger i tolv år,

And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,

som hadde lidd mye under mange leger, og brukte alt hun hadde uten å bli bedre – tvert imot var det blitt verre.

And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,

Da hun hørte om Jesus, kom hun bakfra i folkemengden og rørte ved hans klær.

When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.

For hun sa: Om jeg bare rører ved klærne hans, blir jeg frisk.

For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

Straks stanset hennes blødninger, og hun merket i sin kropp at hun var helbredet fra sin plage.

And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

Og Jesus, som straks kjente at en kraft hadde gått ut fra ham, snudde seg i folkemengden og sa: Hvem rørte ved klærne mine?

And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?

Hans disipler sa til ham: Du ser at folkemengden presser seg rundt deg, og så spør du: Hvem rørte ved meg?

And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?

Han så seg omkring for å få øye på henne som hadde gjort det.

And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.

Da kom kvinnen, skjelvende og redd, fordi hun visste hva som hadde skjedd med henne, og falt ned for ham og sa ham hele sannheten.

But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

Og han sa til henne: Datter, din tro har gjort deg frisk. Gå i fred, og vær helbredet fra din plage.

And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

Mens han ennå talte, kom noen fra synagogeforstandernes hus og sa: Din datter er død. Hvorfor besvære Mesteren lenger?

While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

Jesus hørte ordene som ble sagt, og sa til synagogeforstanderen: Frykt ikke, bare tro.

As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

Og han lot ingen følge med ham unntatt Peter, Jakob og Johannes, Jakobs bror.

And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.

De kom til synagogeforstanderens hus, og der så han oppstyret og de som gråt og klaget høylytt.

And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

Da han hadde gått inn, sa han til dem: Hvorfor gjør dere så mye ståk og gråter? Barnet er ikke dødt, men sover.

And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.

Men de lo ham ut. Når han hadde sendt dem alle ut, tok han barnets far og mor og dem som var med ham, og gikk inn der barnet lå.

And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.

Og han tok barnet ved hånden og sa til henne: Talitha cumi, som betyr: Pike, jeg sier deg, stå opp.

And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

Og straks sto piken opp og gikk omkring, for hun var tolv år gammel. Og de ble overveldet av stor forundring.

And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

Men han påla dem strengt at ingen måtte få vite dette, og sa at hun skulle få noe å spise.

And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
