Han dro derfra og kom til sitt hjemsted, og disiplene fulgte ham.

And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him.

Da sabbatsdagen kom, begynte han å lære i synagogen. Mange som hørte ham, ble forundret og sa: Hvor har denne mannen fått alt dette fra? Hva slags visdom er dette som er gitt ham, og hvordan kan slike mektige gjerninger gjøres av hans hender?

And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?

Er ikke dette tømmermannen, Marias sønn, broren til Jakob, Joses, Judas og Simon? Og er ikke hans søstre her hos oss? Og de ble støtt av ham.

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

Men Jesus sa til dem: En profet er ikke foraktet andre steder enn i sitt hjemland, blant sine slektninger og i sitt eget hus.

But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

Og han kunne ikke gjøre noen mektig gjerning der, bortsett fra at han la hendene på noen få syke og helbredet dem.

And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

Han undret seg over deres vantro, og han gikk rundt i landsbyene og underviste.

And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

Han kalte de tolv til seg, og begynte å sende dem ut to og to, og ga dem makt over urene ånder.

And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;

Han ga dem befaling om ikke å ta noe med seg på veien, bare en stav; ingen veske, inget brød, ingen penger i beltet.

And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:

De skulle ha sandaler på føttene, men ikke ta med seg to kapper.

But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.

Han sa til dem: I hvilket hus dere enn går inn, bli der til dere drar videre.

And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.

Og de som ikke tar imot dere eller hører på dere, når dere forlater det stedet, rist støvet av føttene deres som et vitnesbyrd mot dem. Sannelig, jeg sier dere, det skal være mer tålelig for Sodoma og Gomorra på dommens dag enn for den byen.

And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Så dro de ut og forkynte at folk skulle angre.

And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

De drev ut mange onde ånder og salvet mange syke med olje og helbredet dem.

And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

Kong Herodes hørte om ham, for hans navn var kjent, og han sa: Johannes døperen er stått opp fra de døde, derfor virker disse mektige gjerningene i ham.

And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

Mens noen sa: Det er Elias. Andre sa: Det er en profet, som en av de gamle profetene.

Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.

Men da Herodes hørte om det, sa han: Det er Johannes, som jeg halshugget. Han er stått opp fra de døde.

But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

For Herodes hadde selv, på grunn av Herodias, sin bror Filips hustru, fått Johannes arrestert og satt i fengsel, for han hadde giftet seg med henne.

For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her.

For Johannes hadde sagt til Herodes: Det er ikke lov for deg å ha din brors hustru.

For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

Derfor var Herodias sint på ham og ønsket å drepe ham, men hun kunne ikke.

Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

For Herodes fryktet Johannes, idet han visste at han var en rettferdig og hellig mann, og han holdt ham i akt. Når han hørte ham, gjorde han mange ting, og han hørte ham gjerne.

For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

Og da en passende dag kom, og Herodes holdt gjestebud på sin fødselsdag for sine stormenn, høvedsmenn og ledende menn i Galilea,

And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee;

Så kom Herodias' datter inn og danset. Hun gledet Herodes og dem som satt til bords med ham, og kongen sa til piken: Be meg om hva du vil, og jeg skal gi deg det.

And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

Han sverget til henne: Hva du enn ber om, skal jeg gi deg, opp til halvparten av mitt rike.

And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

Hun gikk ut og sa til sin mor: Hva skal jeg be om? Hun sa: Johannes døperens hode.

And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

Straks gikk hun med hast inn til kongen og sa: Jeg ønsker at du umiddelbart gir meg Johannes døperens hode på et fat.

And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.

Kongen ble meget bedrøvet, men på grunn av sin ed og for dem som satt med ham, ville han ikke avvise henne.

And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.

Han sendte straks en bøddel og befalte at hans hode skulle bli brakt. Bøddelen gikk og halshugget ham i fengselet.

And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

Han brakte hodet hans på et fat og ga det til piken, og piken ga det til sin mor.

And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.

Da hans disipler hørte om det, kom de og tok kroppen og la den i en grav.

And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

Apostlene samlet seg rundt Jesus og fortalte ham alt de hadde gjort og lært.

And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.

Han sa til dem: Kom med meg til et øde sted og hvil dere litt, for det var mange som kom og gikk, og de hadde knapt tid til å spise.

And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

Så dro de i båt til et øde sted, alene.

And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.

Men folk så dem dra, og mange kjente dem. De skyndte seg til fots fra alle byene og kom dit før dem, og de samlet seg rundt ham.

And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.

Da Jesus kom i land, så han en stor folkemengde og fikk medynk med dem, fordi de var som sauer uten gjeter, og han begynte å lære dem mange ting.

And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

Da det ble sent på dagen, kom disiplene til ham og sa: Dette stedet er øde, og timen er allerede sent.

And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed:

Send dem bort så de kan gå til de omkringliggende gårdene og landsbyene og kjøpe noe å spise.

Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.

Men han svarte: Gi dere dem noe å spise. De sa til ham: Skal vi kjøpe brød for to hundre denarer og gi dem noe å spise?

He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?

Han sa til dem: Hvor mange brød har dere? Gå og se. Da de visste det, sa de: Fem brød og to fisker.

He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

Han befalte dem å få alle til å sette seg i grupper på det grønne gresset.

And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass.

De satte seg i rekker, hundre i hver og femti i hver.

And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

Han tok de fem brødene og de to fiskene, så opp mot himmelen, velsignet og brøt brødene og ga dem til disiplene for å sette dem foran folket, og de to fiskene delte han ut til alle.

And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

Alle spiste og ble mette.

And they did all eat, and were filled.

De samlet opp tolv kurver fulle av brødstykker og rester av fiskene.

And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.

Det var omtrent fem tusen menn som hadde spist av brødene.

And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.

Straks etterpå fikk han disiplene til å gå inn i båten og dra i forveien over til Betsaida, mens han sendte folket bort.

And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.

Da han hadde sendt dem bort, gikk han opp i fjellet for å be.

And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.

Da kvelden kom, var båten midt på sjøen, og han var alene på land.

And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

Han så at de slet med å ro, for vinden var imot dem. Omkring den fjerde nattevakt kom han til dem, gående på sjøen, og han ville gå forbi dem.

And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.

Da de så ham gå på sjøen, trodde de at det var et spøkelse, og de ropte ut.

But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:

For de så ham alle og ble skremt. Men umiddelbart snakket han til dem og sa: Vær ved godt mot! Det er jeg. Vær ikke redde.

For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

Han steg opp i båten til dem, og vinden stilnet. De ble helt overveldet og forundret.

And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.

For de hadde ikke forstått det med brødene, for deres hjerte var fortsatt hardt.

For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.

Etter å ha krysset over, kom de til land ved Gennesaret og la til kai der.

And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.

Da de steg ut av båten, gjenkjente folk ham straks,

And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,

og de løp rundt i hele den regionen og begynte å bringe dem som var syke på båre til steder hvor de hørte han var.

And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.

Uansett hvor han gikk inn, i landsbyer, byer eller på landet, la de de syke på torvene og bønnfalt ham om å få røre ved kanten av kappen hans. Og alle som rørte ved ham, ble helbredet.

And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
