Da samlet fariseerne og noen av de skriftlærde seg rundt ham, de kom fra Jerusalem.

Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.

Og da de så at noen av disiplene hans spiste med urene, det vil si uvaskede, hender, kritiserte de dem.

And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.

For fariseerne, og alle jødene i sin helhet, spiser ikke uten at de først vasker hendene ofte, i henhold til de gamles tradisjon.

For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

Og når de kommer fra torget, spiser de ikke uten først å vaske seg. Det er også mange andre skikker de holder seg til, som vasking av kopper, krukker, kobberkar og bord.

And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

Fariseerne og de skriftlærde spurte ham derfor: Hvorfor lever ikke disiplene dine etter de gamles tradisjon, men spiser med uvaskede hender?

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

Han svarte dem: Jesaja profeterte godt om dere hyklere, som det er skrevet: Dette folket ærer meg med leppene, men hjertet deres er langt borte fra meg.

He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

Men forgjeves tilber de meg, når de underviser menneskebud som lære.

Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Dere setter Guds bud til side og holder fast ved menneskers tradisjoner, som vask av krukker og kopper. Mange slike ting gjør dere.

For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

Og han sa til dem: Dere avviser på en god måte Guds bud for å holde fast ved deres egen tradisjon.

And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

For Moses sa: 'Hedre din far og din mor'; og 'Den som forbanner far eller mor, skal lide døden.'

For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:

Men dere sier: 'Hvis noen sier til sin far eller mor: Det er Corban, det vil si en gave til Gud, alt det som du kunne ha hatt nytte av fra meg,' da er han fritatt.

But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.

Og dere tillater ikke lenger at han gjør noe for sin far eller mor.

And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;

Dere opphever Guds ord med deres tradisjon, som dere har overlevert. Og mange slike ting gjør dere.

Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

Og da han hadde kalt hele folkemengden til seg, sa han til dem: Hør på meg, alle sammen, og forstå!

And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:

Det er ikke noe utenfor et menneske som, når det kommer inn i ham, kan gjøre ham uren. Men det som kommer ut av et menneske, det er det som gjør mennesket urent.

There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

Om noen har ører å høre med, la ham høre.

If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

Da han kom inn i huset, bort fra folket, spurte disiplene ham om lignelsen.

And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.

Og han sa til dem: Er også dere uten forståelse? Forstår dere ikke at alt som kommer inn i et menneske utenfra, ikke kan gjøre ham uren,

And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

for det kommer ikke inn i hjertet hans, men i magen og går ut i do, dette renser alle matvarer.

Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

Og han sa: Det som kommer ut av et menneske, det gjør mennesket urent.

And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

For fra innsiden, fra menneskenes hjerter, kommer onde tanker, utroskap, hor, mord,

For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

tyveri, grådighet, ondskap, svik, utuktighet, et ondt øye, blasfemi, stolthet, dårskap.

Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

Alle disse onde tingene kommer fra innsiden av og gjør mennesket urent.

All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Deretter dro han opp og gikk til grensen til Tyrus og Sidon. Han gikk inn i et hus og ville ikke at noen skulle vite det, men han kunne ikke holde seg skjult.

And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.

For en kvinne, hvis unge datter hadde en uren ånd, hadde hørt om ham og kom og falt ned for hans føtter.

For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:

Kvinnen var greker, en syroføniker etter nasjon, og hun ba ham kaste ut demonen av datteren hennes.

The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

Men Jesus sa til henne: La barna først bli mette, for det er ikke bra å ta barnas brød og kaste det til hundene.

But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

Hun svarte: Ja, Herre; men også hundene under bordet spiser av barnas smuler.

And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.

Og han sa til henne: For dette ordets skyld, gå; demonen har forlatt datteren din.

And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.

Da hun kom hjem, fant hun datteren liggende på sengen og demonen var borte.

And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

Han forlot igjen traktene ved Tyrus og Sidon og kom til Galileasjøen, midt gjennom Dekapolisområdene.

And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.

De førte til ham en mann som var døv og hadde vansker med å snakke, og de ba ham legge hånden på ham.

And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.

Han tok ham til side fra folkemengden, satte fingrene i ørene på ham, spyttet, og rørte ved tungen hans.

And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;

Han så opp mot himmelen, sukket og sa til ham: Effata, det betyr: Bli åpnet.

And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

Straks ble ørene hans åpnet, og båndet om tungen hans ble løst, og han snakket klart.

And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.

Jesus befalte dem at de ikke skulle fortelle det til noen, men jo mer han forbød dem, desto mere spredte de det.

And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;

Og de var over all måte forbauset og sa: Han har gjort alle ting godt. Til og med de døve får han til å høre, og de stumme til å tale.

And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
