På den tiden hørte Herodes, landshøvdingen, om ryktet om Jesus.

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

Og han sa til sine tjenere: Dette er Johannes døperen; han har stått opp fra de døde, og derfor viser mektige gjerninger seg i ham.

And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

For Herodes hadde grep om Johannes, bundet ham og satt ham i fengsel på grunn av Herodias, sin bror Filips kone.

For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.

For Johannes hadde sagt til ham: Det er ikke lovlig for deg å ha henne.

For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

Og da han ville få ham drept, fryktet han folkemengden, fordi de regnet ham som en profet.

And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

Men da Herodes' fødselsdag ble feiret, danset datteren til Herodias for dem, og det behaget Herodes.

But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

Han lovet derfor med en ed å gi henne hva som helst hun ville be om.

Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

Og hun, etter å ha blitt instruert av sin mor, sa: Gi meg Johannes døperens hode på et fat her.

And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

Kongen ble bedrøvet, men for edens skyld, og på grunn av dem som satt til bords med ham, befalte han at det skulle bli gitt henne.

And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

Og han sendte bud, og lot halshugge Johannes i fengselet.

And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

Og hans hode ble brakt på et fat, og gitt til piken, og hun ga det til sin mor.

And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

Og hans disipler kom, hentet liket og begravde det, og gikk og fortalte Jesus.

And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

Da Jesus hørte dette, dro han derfra i båt til et avsides sted for seg selv. Men da folket fikk høre det, fulgte de ham til fots fra byene.

When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

Og da Jesus gikk i land, så han en stor mengde og fikk medynk med dem, og han helbredet de syke blant dem.

And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

Og da det ble kveld, kom disiplene hans til ham og sa: Dette er et øde sted, og tiden er nå forbi; send folket bort, slik at de kan gå inn i landsbyene og kjøpe seg mat.

And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

Men Jesus sa til dem: De behøver ikke gå bort; gi dere dem noe å spise.

But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

Og de sa til ham: Vi har bare fem brød og to fisker her.

And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

Han sa: Bring dem hit til meg.

He said, Bring them hither to me.

Og han befalte folkemengden å sette seg ned på gresset, og tok de fem brødene og de to fiskene, og så opp til himmelen, velsignet dem, brøt dem og ga brødet til disiplene, og disiplene til folkemengden.

And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

Og alle spiste og ble mette, og de samlet opp tolv kurver fulle av smuler som var til overs.

And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

Og de som hadde spist var omkring fem tusen menn foruten kvinner og barn.

And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

Straks etterpå fikk Jesus disiplene sine til å gå inn i en båt og dra foran ham over til den andre siden, mens han sendte folkemengden bort.

And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

Og når han hadde sendt folkemengden bort, gikk han opp i fjellet for seg selv for å be. Da det ble kveld, var han der alene.

And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

Men båten var nå midt ute på sjøen, kastet hit og dit av bølgene, for vinden var imot.

But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

Og i den fjerde nattevakt kom Jesus til dem, gående på sjøen.

And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

Og da disiplene så ham gå på sjøen, ble de skremt og sa: Det er et spøkelse. Og de ropte i frykt.

And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

Men straks sa Jesus til dem: Vær ved godt mot; det er meg; frykt ikke.

But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

Og Peter svarte ham og sa: Herre, hvis det er deg, så byd meg å komme til deg på vannet.

And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

Og han sa: Kom. Og da Peter var kommet ut av båten, gikk han på vannet for å komme til Jesus.

And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

Men da han så vinden blåse hardt, ble han redd, og begynte å synke, han ropte og sa: Herre, redd meg.

But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

Og straks rakte Jesus ut hånden og grep ham, og sa til ham: Du lite troende, hvorfor tvilte du?

And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

Og da de kom inn i båten, løyet vinden.

And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

Og de som var i båten kom og tilba ham og sa: Sannelig, du er Guds Sønn.

Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

Og da de hadde dratt over, kom de til landet Gennesaret.

And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

Og da mennene på dette stedet gjenkjente ham, sendte de bud rundt om i hele det omliggende området, og de brakte til ham alle som var syke.

And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

Og de ba ham om de bare fikk røre ved kanten av hans kledning, og alle som rørte ble fullkomment helbredet.

And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
