Jesus ble da ledet av Ånden ut i ødemarken for å bli fristet av djevelen.

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

Da han hadde fastet i førti dager og førti netter, ble han sulten.

And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

Da kom fristeren til ham og sa: Hvis du er Guds Sønn, så si at disse steinene skal bli til brød.

And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

Men han svarte og sa: Det står skrevet: Mennesket lever ikke av brød alene, men av hvert ord som kommer fra Guds munn.

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Så tok djevelen ham med til den hellige byen, satte ham på tempelets tinde,

Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

og sa til ham: Hvis du er Guds Sønn, kast deg ned herfra, for det står skrevet: Han skal gi sine engler befaling om deg, og på deres hender skal de bære deg, så du ikke støter din fot mot noen stein.

And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Jesus sa til ham: Det står også skrevet: Du skal ikke friste Herren din Gud.

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Igjen tok djevelen ham med opp på et meget høyt fjell og viste ham alle verdens riker og deres prakt.

Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

Og han sa til ham: Alt dette vil jeg gi deg, hvis du faller ned og tilber meg.

And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

Da sa Jesus til ham: Bort fra meg, Satan! For det står skrevet: Herren din Gud skal du tilbe, og ham alene skal du tjene.

Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Da forlot djevelen ham, og se, engler kom og tjente ham.

Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Da Jesus hørte at Johannes var kastet i fengsel, dro han til Galilea.

Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;

Han forlot Nasaret og bosatte seg i Kapernaum, som ligger ved havet, i grenselandet mellom Sebulon og Naftali.

And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:

Dette skjedde for at det skulle bli oppfylt som var talt ved profeten Jesaja, som sa:

That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

Sebulons land og Naftalis land, ved havveien, på den andre siden av Jordan, hedningenes Galilea,

The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

folket som satt i mørket, så et stort lys; og over dem som satt i dødens skygge, strålte lyset frem.

The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

Fra den tid begynte Jesus å forkynne og si: Omvend dere, for himmelriket er nær.

From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Da Jesus vandret langs Galileasjøen, så han to brødre, Simon som kalles Peter, og Andreas, hans bror, som kastet et nett i sjøen; for de var fiskere.

And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

Og han sa til dem: Følg meg, så vil jeg gjøre dere til menneskefiskere.

And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

De forlot straks garnene sine og fulgte ham.

And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

Da han gikk videre derfra, så han to andre brødre, Jakob, sønn av Sebedeus, og Johannes, hans bror, som var i båten sammen med deres far Sebedeus, mens de reparerte garnene sine; og han kalte på dem.

And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

De forlot straks båten og sin far, og fulgte ham.

And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

Jesus vandret omkring i hele Galilea, underviste i synagogene deres, forkynte evangeliet om riket, og helbredet alle slags sykdommer og plager blant folket.

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

Hans ry spredte seg over hele Syria, og folk brakte til ham alle som var syke, som led av ulike sykdommer og plager, besatt av demoner, epileptikere, og de som hadde lammelser, og han helbredet dem.

And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

Store folkemengder fulgte ham fra Galilea, Dekapolis, Jerusalem, Judea og fra områdene bortenfor Jordan.

And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
