The words of hemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,

Da kom Hanani, en av mine brødre, sammen med noen menn fra Juda; og jeg spurte dem om jødene som hadde unnsluppet, de som var igjen etter fangenskapet, og om Jerusalem.

That Hanani, o of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

Og de sa til meg: De som er igjen etter fangenskapet der i provinsen, er i stor nød og vanære. Jerusalems mur er også revet ned, og portene er brent med ild.

And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burd with fire.

Da jeg hørte disse ordene, satte jeg meg ned og gråt, og sørget i flere dager. Jeg fastet og ba for himmelens Gud.

And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourd certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

Og jeg sa: Jeg ber deg, Herre, himmelens Gud, den store og fryktinngytende Gud, som bevarer pakt og nåde for dem som elsker ham og holder hans bud:

And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:

La ditt øre nå være oppmerksomt og dine øyne åpne, så du kan høre din tjeners bønn, som jeg ber for deg nå, dag og natt, for Israels barn, dine tjenere, og bekjenner syndene til Israels barn, som vi har syndet mot deg. Både jeg og mitt fedrehus har syndet.

Let thi ear now be attentive, and thi eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sind against thee: both I and my father's house have sind.

Vi har handlet veldig dårlig mot deg og har ikke holdt budene, forskriftene eller dommene, som du ga din tjener Moses.

We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.

Husk, jeg ber deg, ordet du ga din tjener Moses, hvor du sa: Hvis dere synder, vil jeg spre dere blant folkene.

Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:

Men hvis dere vender tilbake til meg, og holder mine bud og gjør dem, selv om dere er drevet ut til himmelens ytterste del, vil jeg samle dem derfra og bringe dem til stedet jeg har valgt for å sette mitt navn der.

But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

Nå er disse dine tjenere og ditt folk, som du har forløst med din store kraft og din sterke hånd.

Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.

Å Herre, jeg ber deg, la ditt øre være oppmerksomt på din tjeners bønn, og til dine tjeneres bønn, som ønsker å frykte ditt navn. La det lykkes for din tjener i dag, og gi ham nåde hos denne mannen. For jeg var kongens munnskjenk.

O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thi ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.
